GuineaPig’s Training Log - Hunt 300 Deadlift

Strong Pig!
There is something satisfying about watching sumo pulls with good technique. It’s so mechanical and efficient.

Do some then lel. Can’t hurt to be strong and mobile in different ways

I really couldn’t. Atleast not in a way that’s satisfying to watch.

Not with that attitude u won’t. When u believe everything is possible

I feel like if we all just keep talking about Sumo, @Koestrizer will eventually be like ‘dammit fine, I will do them’ and then he’ll be all ‘omg guys u know what these are great’ and then finally he will be all like ‘sorry I ever doubted you guys’ and then we’ll all just laugh.

I’ll have you know that I’m no stranger to sumo deads.
I actually startes deadlifting sumo and probably did it as much as conventional.
But tbh it was probably more a wide stance conventional deadlift than a real sumo.

There really is a wide range that can be used. I mostly just bring my arms inside my knees and take the feet a little wider apart. Sometimes I do like Hamster and get the feet out near the plates. I think all of them have value. I prefer conventional when doing lower weights for reps, better for the hammies.

The stance width doesn’t make the sumo. It’s all in opening at the hips a lot IMO

You really find you can pull more with straps? For me its the opposite, with hook grip I feel like the bar is part of me, with straps it feels like it’s hanging from my arms. Is it some kind of wide stance cheater secret?

On one hand the time taken to set up the lasso straps can take away from ur pull vs a quick hook grip or mixed grip set up. It also requires u to spend extra time setting up in the bottom so for top down deadlift set ups is also disadvantageous.

On the other hand lasso straps can be finger tipped or ROM cut to some degree at least. By artificially lengthening arms positioning + leverage is better for the pull.

What ur describing might be about being active with the lats, keeping the bar close and so forth. I think with straps one has to be just as deliberate with the back tightness. If anything some people have better lat activation in a double overhand position vs mixed grip

Grip is a non issue for me. So not a consideration there.

I’m enjoying the figure 8 straps a I got recently. Got them in the smallest size available so that there’s minimal cutting of ROM. The setup is fast and it feels very much like hook gripping overall. Definitely an upgrade on the lasso style straps

Bench - Light
Bit of fun today. First sesh back at Iron Revolution.

Couldn’t resist taking the log for a spin. Felt meh overall from the clean to the leg drive to the press but hit like 89 or 90kg or something dunno how much it weighs at least about as heavy as I’ve ever log pressed.

Looking forward to getting in some sessions at Iron Revolution over the next few months. Probably do my comp work on comp specific equipment there when the opportunity presents.

Maybe the real sumo was the friends we made along the way.

No, real sumo is plate to plate stance on a deadlift bar with bumper plates.

While wearing nothing but an adult diaper.

Less restriction = Better hip mobility.

Squat - Heavy
Not well recovered for squats today. Technique and strength was not on point. Mismanaging recovery a bit

Probably shouldn’t have taken the option to bump the top double to 185kg. Did a strange knees shifting back thing on the second rep which turned it up to RPE 9. It was some combination of losing tightness, misgrooving and lower body being fatigued. I’m gonna chalk it up to low readiness.

On a positive not I think this is the heaviest double I’ve hit in sleeves on a day of low readiness so it’s sign of some progress at least.

First time on a squat bar. Texas squat bar I think so a little thiccer diameter and longer. Felt comfortable enough and not too far off a standard power bar. Didn’t really notice any extra stability that squat bars are meant to provide but maybe I’m not squatting enough weight lel.

Wants to try out the Monolift as it’s meant to be used as well but didn’t have anyone around the operate it.

It doesn’t make a noticeable difference until you have something like 700lbs on it. A regular power bar shouldn’t have much whip if any at lighter weights. First time I used a squat bar I didn’t even realize it was a squat bar.
