GuineaPig’s Training Log - Hunt 300 Deadlift

That’s one reason why some powerlifters use straps most of the time in training. No matter what you want to say, if your hands are torn then it will affect your grip in a meet and it just isn’t worth it. If you keep pulling with torn hands, depending on how bad it is, you could make it worse or get an infection.

Dat is me with straps. Hook takes a bit of work to maintain but not much like 2 dozen reps a week.

My tear with 270kg was my first time having that happen. Don’t think I had any big callouses so maybe the first rep knocked it out of position in the my hook grip. That area does get some stress though when pulling hook but do I need to do more than just grind down callouses and moisturise? Would minimising volume on the hands be good.

Well, strongman is different, so you will get no argument for me. I was just pointing out what I expected was true, and you confirmed it.

Dealing with injuries are going to be common for all of us, but I think the nature of those injuries differs quite a bit.

The best way I have found to deal with callouses is to shave them down with a safety razor (like Bic or whatever) when your hands have been wet for a while like after a shower. You have to pick the dead skin out a few times but it’s not big deal and (at least I think) much better than any sort of grinding. I heard some weightlifters do that so I tried.

How much volume you can handle depends on you, but there’s nothing wrong with erring on the side of caution as long as you do enough that you know grip won’t be an issue. You can also do grip work, like overhand holds without the hook grip.

Mayb one day. I’ll spend some time on calibrated which will be humbling but next time I do a cycle of meme deadlifts I’ll be pushing it into the high 200s. No rush though but hopefully 300kg will come around in a year or two. Might need to bulk to high 90s kh bodyweight to do it

Funny enough this tear comes a 2 weeks after I’ve really been upping the hand care like from zero lol. I use like pumice stone in shower and grind down the raised bits that are going to catch a bit

So with a razor r u literally cutting it off?

Dunno if grip work is particularly useful given hook grip provides infinite cheating grip. My grip strength has gone up a bit this year but not particularly strong overall.

Maybe you overdid the hand care? It’s possible.

It just takes some of the top layer off, you have to go back and forth over the same spot several times and from different angles. You don’t press it down hard into your hand, maybe a bit more pressure than if you were shaving your face. It’s not like cutting it off with a knife or anything like that. I seriously recommend it. There won’t be any raised bits, it gets it totally smooth.

Just pull hook grip often enough that you know you can handle more than your max no problem. I’m not really sure how much grip work will actually help your hook grip, but if you had issues with grip failing it would be worth a try. I wouldn’t try long hook grip holds though, that would be terrible.

So it’s like shaving… but ur hand

With dis?

Returned the weights and bench I was renting during quarantine today. So I have some weights left that I bought myself, a rack and no bench for the coming week before gyms re open.

I’ll look and around see if there’s a decent bench for sale because if I buy something it’ll be something decent that goes towards a future home gym not something shite.

Gyms open up next week so I’m keen.

Yes.

Floor press?

I think ima just take time off the bench. Do other pressing movements for a bit. Bench has been feeling off anyways so I’ll take a pivot week away from it

Pig Reflections

Hi all. I’m sitting here chilling on a Sunday morning coming off the high of a big deadlift PB during this week long break from uni.

270kg for a dub seems surreal and I could’ve had more if my hand hadn’t torn and my technique had been more stable.

The gains have been great this year on the back end of back injury rehab and all the way through lockdown. First week of this year hit 220kg for reps which was the first deadlift PR for a long time + back injury lay off time. So mad gains in the first half of this year since.

I’m tempted to push all the way through to 300kg on the cheat set up (deadlift bar + bumpers) because it’s not super far anymore. At one time not too long ago it seemed impossible within my lifting life time.

There something to be said for slow sustainable gains though and I aim to compete within the next 6-9 months depending on how busy life is so I think it makes sense to do the majority of my training on calibrated plates again for a while even if absolutely load on the bar will drop for a while. I think I’ll keep “meme” deadlifts within the program as a somewhat infrequent assistance movement. I’m still committed to losing some weight because I’m not comfy being heavy for too long so that too.

I’ll look to hit 300 hundo in some shape or form within a year or 1.5. I’m still a young relatively young bloke for a while longer so should be aight for it.

As time goes by maybe we’ll look towards 700 lbs about 320kg but if progress is slowing or age catches up to this GuineaPig might look at some Russian sports supplements.

Good news for you - you could hit 300 tomorrow if you wanted it.

Enjoy the consistent reminders you’ll get from me about that for the next 1-1.5 years.

Thanks brother. Looking forward to it

Who knows I could blast tren for 10 years and go break a world record. 74kg class record is only like 800 lbs no biggie

This. Do this :joy:

While I haven’t felt it apparently readiness is still down from the max deadlift sesh. Squats felt meh tonight but got in the work at gym nemesis’ home gym.

Touched some dumbbell press for the first time since before lockdown and felt pretty good considering my pressing has felt terrible as of recent.
