A little more by ESPN about GSP on E:60. It’s got some interesting shots of his more recent training, in the pool, foam rolling, and a very dorky re-enactment of childhood bullying. Low point of the feature is Tito Ortiz. Guy always looks like his head is about to explode.
I’ve got to say, something that resonates in me with GSP is the bullying. Story of my G’damn school life. I remember getting spat on, getting the shit kicked out of me and rotten avocados getting thrown with pin point accuracy at my head. Kids are cruel, and the cruelest tend to track down the dorkiest with shameful consequences. I’m not sure anyone of those dicks would fuck with GSP now and I like to think, as mediocre as I am, that I’d kick seven shades of ‘fuck-yeah’ out of my own school bullies today.
A little anecdote: I was working out, doing hammer curls when this came on the tv in my gym. I got so distracted I upper-cutted myself in the chin with a 30 pound dumbbell. I put the DUMB in dumbbell.
In one shot, when GSP does a ground and pound on the bag, his legs look pretty damn big. Then when he is holding a high kick, they look skinny again. I think it’s an optical illusion with his legs or odd camera angles

Bas Ruten said he used to get picked on in school. So on his reunion, he challenged the bullies that picked on him to a fight. They all declined. lol

Making for the interesting conundrum that perhaps not all bullies are as chronically stupid as you would imagine.
I started muay thai back in the spring and am loving it, but after seeing that cool-ass thai pad-spinning move, screw all this punching and kicking shit – I wanna’ learn that!!
PS: I assume Tiger Muay Thai is in no way related to the ol’ Tiger Shulmann’s Karate/MMA here in the States . . . ?

Nope! Tiger Muay Thai has nothing to do with Tiger Shulman. TMT does have an affiliate gym that just opened in Chiang Mai though. Also, a great place to practice Muay Thai.
Good luck with the Muay Thai! Or, as my trainer used to scream at me “Jabba! Jabba! More Powah! Likah this!!!”

Thanks! It’s kicking my ass but it’s awesomely fun. Can’t believe how much I’ve learned already. (I go to Five Points Academy in NYC.) Good times!

You just cant get the same quality Muay Thai trainers anywhere else I know of Its like one of you said earlier, what other place can you get privat lessons with the top trainers in the world being a new fighter(average Joe). And then he Barbosa got dropped by Jamie Varner.
And your point?
He’s a massive pussy and I would humiliate him in a thumb war.
Hahaha love it!
my point is that the striking disparity most fans think exists doesn’t
Uhh yeah it does
how the fuck does Barboza getting caught prove that?
Precisely. When you fight, on occasion, you get knocked the fuck out. That’s life.
Almost every great fighter, the ones we still talk about today, has been stopped at some point. Anyone who thinks one bad loss makes or breaks a fighter, needs to spend less time on internet forums, and more time in a fight gym.
As Pigeonkak says, you fight, in time, you’re going to get caught flush. If you’re really good, say a sugar ray robinson, you might o 120+ fights before it happens. But at that level, all fighters are dangerous and sooner or later, you are going to get your clock cleaned. That’s the nature of the beast.
Have you guys seen the episode 2 of Primetime GSP vs Condit? It shows GSP going through his Muay Thai training. Skip to the last 5 mins or so if you just want to see that.

Absolutely. However, Edson pretty much got dominated in the standup by a very sharp Jamie Varner in that fight. That said, I’m still not sure what the original point was… Perhaps that Edson is not as good a striker as that GIF would lead you to believe?

Best part is when Zahibi warns everyone in the gym to only spar lightly with Lamsomgkram and not get too aggressive or, “he’ll put you in the morgue.”

I love it. St Pierre will take this. Too strong, too sharp, too quick and 50 times better ground game.
I like how St Pierre adds " no front kicks to the face, it is disrespectful". That’s what I mentioned before, the guy seriously absorbs the very essence of what it is he is learning. In the Thai culture, that is true, the foot is considered to be the literal and embodiment of disrespect. Had a mate who almost got stabbed by random’s in a bar for taking his money out of his sock because the kings face was on the bills and they took grave offence. Actually this also carries over into middle eastern culture too. Sitting and having your leg crossed over so that your sole points at someone is utter disrespect.
Nice to see Georges comprehends subtleties.
The Thais are the best to work with until you try and rise above your ability or experience. They will step back for you if you are more skilful than them but if you’re not and try to play rough, they usually throw you around, rag doll you and do things like kick you in the head or knee you in the head as your falling to remind you. Things they usually don’t do even when they have the ability to if you’re showing respect. Such a wonderful culture. Love em.
