Grow! & Too Many Nutrients?

Hey guys,
I was just thinking about something today. I usually have like 7 scoops of Low-Carb Grow! a day. I know that there are extra vitamins added and the 7 scoops would way exceed RDA on most. Do you think that it could be a problem, especially if Im taking an additional multi vitamin? Maybe Cy knows?

Anyone?

I think you’re fine. I take 2 multi vitamins a day and have about 5-7 scoops of Grow!

I don’t have my Grow! in front of me, but I think most of the extra’s in there are water soluable. So basically, whatever your body doesn’t need at the time, you will get rid in your urine.

Just my $.02

The short answer is, RDA’s are written for people doing considerably less than us. I wouldn’t worry about it.

The first question that pops into mind - why are you taking 7 scoops per day?? That seems like a lot…

The answer to that question is that I am a full time college student trying to get 1.5 times bodyweight in protein per day. I eat in the dining hall 3 times a days plus shakes at 2 or 3 times a day with fiber and almonds to make a meal. Plus I drink 2 scoops of Grow! before bed as well. It is more economical and convenient than 6 or 7 solid meals a day.

I understand that an athlete’s need for vitamins and minerals are higher, but how high? 7 scoops of Grow! has 210% RDA for calcium. I am also getting calcium from almonds and veggies. Does anyone know of toxicity levels of calcium or if it can interfere with the absorption of other nutrients in very high doses? Thanks
-Matt

In general, when there’s an influx of calcium into the body, the body reduces calcium absorption and increases both urinary exctrection of calcium and calcium utilization by bone.

Only if you have something like parathyroidism should you be concerned.

Oh, and yes, calcium inteferes with the absorption of vitamin D and K and magnesium.

As far as the Grow! formulation in general, we only put in those nutrients (for the most part) that help you utilize the proteins it contains.

And believe me, 7 scoops isn’t that much compared to what most of here at the office use.

I have 12 scoops a day, so 7 isn’t really all that much.

So you get 240 grams of protein just from Grow!? How much do you get from other sources?

I wish I could handle that much cassein. I seem to geastric distress on anything past 3 scoops a day.

I don’t see how people are having 7-12 scoops/day. You say you’re a college student and Grow! is more economical. What about cottage cheese or tuna?Excellent sources of protein and quite economical. I live in the dorms too, but I recommend trying to get as much as you can from whole foods instead of relying so much on the powder.

I agree that one should get as much as possible from whole food sources. But, I live in a tiny ass triple with no fridge (I’m getting one next year when im in a single), and tuna is not really something I can eat on the way to class. Partly because it requires a sink and draining and partly because it will make me smell like ass; something I dont want to have to worry about while going to class. I use the almonds and fiber to keep my more full for longer. Thanks for the advice though, everyone.

Right now I’m doing the V-Diet, Pretty much all of nutrients except for fats, are coming from Grow.

Getting 7 scoops a day is awesome, and as another college student I wish i could get on the ball there. As with cottage cheese and tuna, since i hate the way they taste I have to look other places like the powder. Its so easy to chuck into a water bottle and sip on while i’m walking to class or whatnot.

I’ve noticed that lots of the vitamins in Grow! are only 25% of RDA. So you would need to take 4 servings to meet the RDA. We, as atheletes/lifters, can of course have more. I think Biotest did a great job at keeping the vitamin percentages low since they know their users will consume numerous servings per day.

I mis-spoke. I am having 6 shakes a day on the V-diet, but 2 of them are single scoop servings, so instead of 12 scoops a day, I am having only 10. Sorry about that.
