Hi guys. I have normally been using Champion Nutrition Heavy Weight Gainer 900, but my friend recommended the one he uses, and I was able to find it for a good price online. The weight gainer is TwinLab Gainers Fuel 2500, and I’m just wondering if this is a good one to use. Here are some of the important nutritional facts:
The “serving size” seems pretty outrageous considering it’s a 9.31 lb tub and there are only 7 of those servings in the whole thing. I would probably only use 1 scoop per serving, which would equal 800 cals, 160g carbs, 85g sugar, and 17g protein. The sugar part is what turns me off a little, it seems pretty darn high.
Any comments on the TwinLab company, this specific weight gainer, or weight gainers in general would be greatly appreciated.

Gainer’s fuel 2500 is complete BS. Way too much carbs. It also has way too much carbs. I think the biggest problem is that it has way too much carbs. I can’t say for sure if any of the weight gainers on the market today are worth a damn anymore. When Michael Zumpano owned Champion I think the heavyweight 900 was a decent product. Weight gainer products seem like a really convenient way to get tons of calories. But you will probably see better results eating real food and adding some Grow! protein powder. Try this: mix half a can of coconut milk, 12 ounces of cold water, one tablespoon of fish oil and three scoops of Grow! powder. Enjoy while eating one cup of mixed nuts (no peanuts). Makes for a good snack when you’re trying to gain weight. For post-workout eating, find the “time to slop the hawgs” recommendation in one of the “Branding Iron” columns.
why don’t you just go buy a big bag of sugar and mix in some protein powder into a few cups of it, it’s gotto be cheaper (not necessarily healthy, but it’s the same effect).

OK. On weight gainers in general I have a question of my own. Why? Look at where the bulk of those calories are coming from. Sugar! I don’t care if you are training 4 times a day; you’ll never utilize even half that amount of sugar and it will go straight to your gut. Eat real food and supplement that with whey powder or a MRP with some “good” carbs and fiber in it.

Dude! Pickup a gallon of whole milk! that’ll help you gain weight…have some yugurt throughout the day to help process the milk.
I have make great gains on milk recently.
HAhahah… me too man… My secret… except low fat or fat free milk to cut out the sugars.
Hahaha, well apparently I’m the only one who thought my post actually had some value to it. As I stated before, the amount of sugar in it seemed really strange… so I just had to ask about it. I appreciate the comments… and, um, I think I’ll be passing on this product, lol.

i have never understood the existance of “weight gainers”, and i don’t think i ever will. not one for gimmicks
I fell for it 10 years ago when I was still new to training and reading Flex and Muscle & Fitness. It worked alright. I used that Weight Gainer 900 mixed in 2% milk every morning for breakfast (then ate lunch, dinner and snacks in between). I put more than 20lbs in about three months.
Unfortunately, I’d say at least half of it was FAT! The only thing that helped me was the fact that I was training with some very big and strong dudes, and they worked me out hard. That’s when my legs were big (for me) and I was squatting 325lbs @ 155lbs and doing the leg press with six plates on each side plus the 100lb plate in the center.
Unfortunately, when I realized I was getting too fat, I decided to get leaner. I did. But lost all the strength in the process. But damn, yo, I had ABS!!! LOL!!!
So yeah, it’ll work. But would I ever recommend it or do it again? HELL NO! I’ve learned so much more about proper training and nutrition that I could never recommend someone use weight gainer.

That was because throughout the early 90’s, that was the largest promotion in muscle magazines. Everyone bought those. I feel they only have a use if someone’s metabolism is extremely fast, and even then, the suggested serving sizes on the label should never be followed. There were many times that I would add one scoop of a weight gainer to a simple protein powder. I think there are too many alternatives now, however, plus I think learning how to cook and getting a job to cover food expenses should be the major priority.
You already know my stance on bulking up and why I believe it works so I will never claim that they were absolutely useless. They weren’t. If nothing else, they helped me learn where my limits were calorically…which were much higher than I originally thought they would be. The age of the individual and activity level are both to be considered as well. For someone with a desk job to ever touch one of these would be beyond stupid. For the kid playing two sports who doesn’t spend hours in front of the tv screen on a Playstation or X-Box and who has a raging metabolism plus an explosive growth spurt, they just might have a place. If that same kid has parents that will provide enough to eat or who gets a job to cover his needs, then there are alternatives if they have the guidance. I didn’t.
Well I do have a very high metabolism and I am very active in sports and in my job (I have a job and go to college too… 20 yrs old). I am a soccer instructor and this summer (in about 2 weeks) I’ll be a camp counselor for the university summer camp at the rec center. I’ll be working about 30-35 hours a week AND taking classes. For those reasons, it seemed that if anyone were a candidate for the use of a weight gainer, it would be me. I’m 5’6’’ 138 lbs, very very low body fat%, and in great shape. I’m just looking to add some bulk so I don’t have to flex every friggin time I want to show I have muscle.
Dude, buy some Surge and Low-Carb Grow! through the products button on this site. Then sit down and start reading the nutrition and diet articles in the Articles section. You’ll be doing yourself a huge favor.

Although you may consider yourself a candidate for a weight gainer, they still aren’t the best thing out there. Many of them have poor quality ingredients. You really are better off buying Classic Grow! and Surge. Add Gatorade to the Surge postworkout and add more food with the Grow!
If you are eating a lot of good, whole food, you should definitely be able to gain. As it’s been mentioned on other threads, you can’t eat 5-6 small, clean meals each day and gain if you have a fast metabolism. Sure, you can eat healthy stuff, but you can eat more of it and get away with some burgers, more milk, bread, pasta and other things too. Eat more calories, more meals, etc.

I agree with this for the most part, however, I will add that I don’t usually use Grow! because of the thickness of it. There are other quality products on the market as far as meal replacements and protein are concerned. I understand this is a Biotest website, but does everyone have to only recommend Biotest products for everyone and everything? Surge does sound like a decent idea if you have the money and are confused about what your body needs post-training. The ability to relax on what you eat inside of reason is probably the best point you need to focus on.

I think Surge is a great product for what it is designed to do. Like Lee Labrada’s Lean Body for protein though, usually mixed in whole milk when gaining.
