I’ve noticed that if I stick to mostly eating foods from the region I’m originally from (South Asia) I feel damn good. So that’s how the list is created for me and the wife.
I don’t shop for the week, but I go food shopping every week to keep the fridge/freezer/cupboards stocked. A few days ago I hit Costco and then BJ’s, came home with:
12 cans wild tuna in water
3 pounds organic Greek yogurt
6 pounds organic chicken breast
6 pounds organic chicken thighs
4 pounds organic ground beef
4 pounds organic salsa
Big bag organic tortilla chips
10-pack of socks (hey, it was on the shopping list)
$120
18 free-range eggs
3 pounds organic grass-fed ground beef
3 half-gallons organic whole milk
Case of “Triple Zero” yogurt
Big pack of mozzarella
2 pounds sliced cheddar cheese
1 pound each deli ham, deli turkey, deli salami
4 pounds frozen spinach/kale mix
5 avocados
4 pounds organic pears (8 pears)
Bunch of bananas
Bag of lemons
Bag of limes
2 pounds organic butter
2 pounds sour cream
Bag of potato chips
2 bags of Doritos
Loaf of white bread
Case of G2 Gatorade
Case of stevia packets
2 bottles mustard
Case of cat food
Case of quart-size sandwich bags
Sleeve of C batteries
Insulated tote bag (previous one broke and there was a coupon. Yay.)
$215
Fridge/freezer in the kitchen, full freezer in the basement, dorm-sized mini-fridge on the porch. Most of the meat is kept in the basement freezer, yep.
I’m pretty consistent on what I eat, and it can all be made from:
Proteins:
Tuna (Wild Planet with just sea salt added). I eat this pretty much daily.
Chicken. I eat this maybe 4-5 days a week.
Eggs. I’m actually eating fewer these days. Maybe 3-5 eggs/week.
Beef (usually grass-fed ground). I eat this maybe 2 times a week.
Whey (no artificial colors, flavors, or especially sweeteners. I can’t stand those nasty fake flavors). Daily for me.
Fruits/vegetables
Frozen blueberries. Daily.
Bananas. Daily.
Apples. Daily.
Spinach. Daily. Two big handfuls.
Broccoli/cauliflower. Most days, with dinner.
Lettuce. Most days, with a tuna sandwich.
Other Must-haves I always keep around
Dijon mustard. I use this to make tuna sandwiches. Sounds gross, but much better than mayo.
Whole milk. Daily.
Coconut water. Maybe 3-4 times/week.
Cayenne pepper. I add this to my tuna. It’s awesome.
Special treats/occasionals that I have 1-3 times/week
Dark chocolate. Favorites are with sea salt / caramel.
Kombucha.
Good Beer. IPA’s or sours. So many awesome ultra-local spots these days, it’s great to be a beer fan.
Wine. Reds.
Yellow mustard: okay, but not great. You need to cut it with something like a small amount of mayo. Just overwhelms the tuna.
Honey mustard: Not very good. Too sweet and doesn’t go with the tuna.
Horseradish mustard: Again, not a great flavor combo with tuna, but much better than honey mustard or yellow mustard.
Dijon mustard: Yes!! This is the best. Some additions that make it even better: cayenne pepper, black pepper, and/or curry. The curry sounds weird, but it’s good. I usually go with just cayenne pepper and black pepper, but the curry is good.
Also, Wild Planet tuna is the best. Don’t drain the oil!
