Grip Strength

What are the best exercises to improve your grip? I have small wrists and my grip tends to fail me on deadlifts and shrugs before the muscles I’m working do. I had a split tendon in my right hand two years ago and the right hand is a tad weaker than the left. I know that the injury is a factor in my strength in that area but any help will be greatly appreciated!

try the ironmind website. Great grip stuff there.

You can probably search this site for a lot of things, but get yourself some kettlebells if you can afford them. Also, try farmer walks, wheelbarrow walks, straight arm hangs from a pull-up bar (about 30 seconds each hang … it’s harder than you think), wrist curls, fisted push-ups, and Ironmind makes some good grippers.

Go to grippage.cyberpump.com & ask on the grip board. I’d say get some CoC grippers from Ironmind & do strapholds w/them. Here’s what one looks like http://www.cyberpump.com/ gallery/album03/aah There’s a ton more stuff you can do to increase your grip strength. What else do you want to know???

T-mag has published two very good grip articles. One was by Chad Waterbury, the other was a Short Topic I think. Check the search engine at T-mag.

I have the same problem. I recently started doing pinch work with plates and my grip has improved significantly.

There is no “best exercise” in anything.

Though I really like training with CoC grippers I don’t think they have done much for my grip strength in regards to farmer’s walks or just barbell holds. I would think for your purposes, if your goal is to deadlift and shrug without your grip failing you may want to try barbell and dumbell holds. Timed or famers walks. Also whoever mentioned the grip page. There is useful stuff there.

Best advice I can give is to get the book ‘Mastery of Hand Strength’, a great book with heaps of info and excercises that you don’t need a lot of special equipment for.
