Green Veggies - How Much Is Too Much?

hey coach,

i always wondered to what extent the rule of “dont count calories from green veggies on a fat loss” diet approach went. i was wondering if eating a bag of steamed brocolli at each meal would be a problem. each bag usually has 12 oz. of brocolli.

also, i was wondering if you would count calories from a fiber supplement such as 100% psyllium husk or acacia fiber.

thanks for any response, and i know this is kind of a wierd question.

Haha I eat quite a bit of veggies myself . . . all calories still count on a fat loss diet, but calories from green leafy vegetables really do not have a significant effect on insulin.

I don’t think extra fiber is really necessary through supplements. If you’re a fan of beans, just get a few bags of them dry. They’re pretty cheap. I did read that too much fiber actually decreases testosterone, however.

well i know that on a low carb diet you need more fiber, plus the fact that it would be hard to get 35-40 grams of fiber just from green veggies if you are low carbing. thats why i use fiber supplements, such as psyllium husk fiber. also, there have been several articles that have suggested not counting calories from green veggies such as brocolli, spinach, etc. i know that thibs suggests not to count them, but i was wondering to what extend. i guess everyone is different though. i appreciate the response and advice man.

Green veggies like broccoli, kale, and spinach contain very few calories. The calories also cost more caloric energy to digest than most foods, therefore, they partially cancel themselves out. Combine this with the fact that they don’t raise insulin much if at all, they are high in fiber, and actually high from a percentage standpoint. They also crowd out other foods which is good for fat loss.

I think it would be impossible to eat too many greens during a fat loss phase. Unless you are eating a lot of oil or butter on them, you simply can’t eat enough greens to get fat. And like I said, the more greens you eat, probably the less other foods you’ll eat. Not to mention how healthy it is for you to eat a shitload of greens. They contain “EVERYTHING”, except calories.

Broccoli is awesome…I don’t know what Thib would say about this…but 12oz at EVERY meal is A LOT of f’ing broccoli. I think if you were going on a KETO diet it WOULD be a problem…thats like over 125g of carbs in just your broccoli (assuming your eating 6 meals per day…with 12oz at every meal) and dude that would be easily over 40g of fiber I think. I know I just eat it at will kind of thing…but I don’t come anywhere near 12oz at every meal…and Im not on a Keto diet…Id actually like to see what THIB has to say about this myself…

I thought that we couldn’t digest the cellulose in broccoli so we could not get any energy from it? Is there other sources of calories in it?

well i was just posing the brocolli at every meal thing as hypothetical. i personally only eat about 2 of those bags a day. they are frozen brocolli, so when they are steamed in the bag in the microwave, i know that they are carrying lots of water. even with that it still only reaches 12 ounces, so in reality its probably less brocolli than 12 oz. per bag.
