Greek Nutrition?

How come the Greek athletes didn’t take any supp’s yet they were extremely ripped. They didn’t have supp’s back then like we do now, just food.

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Food back then wasn’t processed at all. Unlike now, where everything is processed to some degree. As a result the food was better. We buy supplements to replace many of the nutrients that are lost during processing.

Thats the biggest reason I can think of.

Great Greek Genetics

true.
But it seems like one needs this protein shake and that protien shake and this pre w/o supp and that post w/o supp. And if you dont take these things your muscles wont get it’s optimal nutrition.

True these things can help but can’t one just stick to the basic supp’s and not go broke:
Multi
Fish oil
Whey
joint supp
Qaulity food.

Any opinion? How did the greeks do it? What were their pre/post workout “supplements”?

That’s all there was to it. There wasn’t a single magical food that made them ripped. Pretty sure that they didn’t understand that after a hard day of work or exercise they should immediately consume a meal with proteins and simple carbs. Back then, if you were hungry, you either found something to eat or you starved until you could find something.

Food. They ate good food and they worked out a lot.

It isn’t that complex. And, most weren’t large, 250 lb athletes.

How many ancient Greek athletes have you seen? How do you know they were extremely ripped?

In reality, I doubt that most Greek athletes fit the Greek ideal.

Besides, no one ever said that supplements are required to get big or ripped, they just make the job easier.

Yeah, a lot of the statutes are photoshopped.

Plus, they had great relationships with various gods, who could help with physique goals more effectively than roidz.

Just to clarify, you’re talking about the ancient Greeks, correct? In that case, I wouldn’t be so quick to say they didn’t have supplements. I’ve read about them having used mushrooms and caffeine specifically for improved athletic performance, as well as using specific ointments to relieve pain without effecting performance. So it was more than having “just food” and nothing else.

True enough, but as with many things related to training, there’s good, better, and best. Eating food is good, eating specific foods in certain amounts is better, and taking targeted supplements for a specific purpose is best.

Not sure why you’re hung up on the ancient Greeks, but you could also look back just a century, to the old time strongmen like Saxon, Sandow, and Goerner.

They didn’t have the same type of supplements (or training equipment) we have today, but they still got crazy-strong, muscular, and relatively-lean. But even then, in the early 1900’s, Saxon wrote about drinking Bovril (a meat-based extract) after his workouts.

On the most basic level, the nutrition part of muscle-building comes down to getting enough calories, carbs, fat, and protein. You can do that with steak, potatoes, red beans and rice, Metabolic Drive, Surge Recovery, or any combination thereof.

But, being in the position we’re in today and having access to what we do, there’s almost no reason not to capitalize on smart, targeted sports supplementation.

They ate better, and worked hard all the time. There were no desk jobs or heavy machinery. If you needed a pile of stones moved you did it yourself. I think supplements are helpful and useful but not imperative.

Ok so first we had the “Protein Sources Other Than Dairy” thread followed by “BB Contest Body”, and now this one?

What’s worse is I don’t think it’s even intentional trolling.

They might have had good bodies but, I really doubt any of them had bodies like those on the statues they made. The statues were of the ideal body. I would guess that they had there own form of photoshop, the sculptor would make them more muscular than they actually were.

I agree, which makes it even worse.

shugrblossm2, before you make anymore threads PLEASE read the following 3 articles!
Muscle on a Budget

Protein: More Muscle, Less Guesswork

Muscle Building Meals

This should atleast give you some idea as to things to eat other than milk.

you no good

I agree with a few of the others that said “how do you know they were ripped” would you really say ripped? why not shredded? The statues are the ideal.

as the inimitable Chris Colucci posted, they did have special diets and ancient cultures were educated in the use of herbs. They even collected sweat off of gladiators maybe not knowing there were pheromones, but knowing the smell increased the libido.

and not everyone was an elite athlete… for the athletes, or the soldier, training was their job.

no processed foods, and they got a lot of food

Also, if you’re basing you assumptions on paintings and statues . . . chances are that’s not 100% accurate in terms of what they looked like.

I mean, the artists weren’t trying to “take pictures,” they were creating art.

It’s sad I gave this memeber some advice and she throws it back in my face despite the fact that the threads were pointless to begin with.
