Gotta love the Turkish Get-up

While it was near the end of another long day in our exercise physiology lab, some of my co-workers decided to give the Turkish Get-up a try for the first time. Our set of powerblocks only goes up to 90lbs, so that was the goal. I had only used a moderate weight and went for reps and had never gone heavy. All I have to say is that going heavy on this movement is awesome. All four of us got up 90 with our right arm, but only one could get up with his left. I can’t wait to walk into the middle of the weight room at 24 Hour Fitness, grab the 100 lb dumbell and try to PR on the Turkish Get-Up right around all the other people plugging away on the bench press for the 4th time in the week. Anyway, just wanted to spread some love for the Turkish Get-Up.

uh… just what the hell is a turkish get up?

I hear you man. I have recently been adding the Turkish Get Ups in my routine, and I can feel soreness in my muscles I thought didn’t exist. It’s funny you mentioned 24 hour fitness. I used to be a member of one of their chains, and it was the worst experience I ever went through. The place would always be packed from 5 in the afternoon till 11 at night, everyday. What’s worse, there would be only 2 sets per weight on their dumbbell rack. I could never get a good workout because the weights would always be gone.

To those that don’t know what this exercise is: use the magic search engine. Much faster than asking then waiting around for a reply. But I’ll give you the link anyway 'cause I’m so gosh darn nice. Strength Training, Bodybuilding & Online Supplement Store - T NATION

reeshdawg - I hear you about 24 Hour Fitness. I have a small gym in my exercise physiology lab, but I missed the gym environment. The gym is packed most of the time, but I’ve switched my workout time to about 9 or 10pm. Its not crowded at all around that time and I’ve had minimal problems. I also tailor my workout split to avoid the the congestion around the workout stations. It’s always nice to see 10 people fighting for 3 bench press stations on Monday (otherwise known everyone else’s bench day) while I’m hitting the squat rack.

I’ve never done one but I know what it is…which is why I’m thinking 90 lbs. is pretty fricken strong no?

I noted the link given was the T-mag descrip. done this way they are much easier to go heavy then done, wo a propping hand…

Jason, that’s funny you mention Monday being everyone’s bench press day. I wonder why these same people aren’t in the gym the rest of the week. 90 pounds is pretty damn heavy for a turkish get up. I’d hate to argue with you over who gets the bench press.
