Gotta Get Small

an oportunity to become a flight nurse on an air ambulance (helicopter) has come my way, which is good as it is something i have always wanted to do but it is hard to break into that type of nursing. unfortuneatly, there is a 210lb duty weight limit(yourself, cloths and equipment), and right now i am about 225-230lbs.

soooo, thus begins my journey to shed 35lbs (at least). wish me luck, i will need it.

So Greg you’re a male nurse…just kidding, sucks there’s a weight restriction though, what happens if you have to carry some fatty and your partner is weak?

yea thats ridiculous. the pilot should have to lose weight. 165lbs is plenty of weight to work the pedals and stick. i took a helicopter tour at the beginning of the summer. pilot was great, nice guy, very intelligent, etc. but honestly, he was probably 210lbs at literally 5’4"…very different situation than youll be in, just making some talk.

anyway, good luck man, you can do it!

HT is like 5’ 7", i think he will still be pretty big and strong at 210

yeah, aboot 4 years ago i got down to 205lbs, and was still pretty thick, i have some pics, maybe i will post them, but definitly a lot smaller than i am now.

The weight restriction is to save fuel etc…

Are you carrying a lot of fat? That is a frikkin lot of muscle to try and lose.

Good luck to you and good on you

On your flight, if you don’t have to do a line drop in a term, do you have to run around the helipad nude?

hahahahha man you could lose 10 lbs just waxing your back

so… you got to lose about 15lbs … I think you could do that and you’d look incredible. Make it your focus I reckon you can do that. You aren’t really fat but you do have some fat on you to lose to get your weight down.

Maybe get some lightweight boots too if you can choose the boots, that could shave 2lbs off alone. But at least you are carrying functional weight, for most people those restrictions … you’re talking about a fat person. Pity you can’t trade weights with the rest of the crew.

In Australia our rescue chopper crew have a deal where, if during your 8 week or so term of service you don’t do a single winch drop, you have to run around the helipad nude.

oh, alright then. i would hate to stand out…

How long do you have to lose it? If you have a little time, I would do something like Berardi’s Get Shredded or the Velocity Diet all the while continuing to lift hard to help burn the fat. Then when you’re really lean, stop lifting for awhile, decrease your protein a lot, up the cardio a lot, etc…

Bah, you can do it man, it should be easy. You’ll have to screw around with the perfect eating system you had though…

Sigh, another pizza eater bites the dust!

heavythrower,

Good luck man. I wanted to be a part of the Aeromed crew that operates with our local hospitals, but I got hit with a 200lb weight restriction.

I knew right there and then that idea was done. I haven’t weighed that since '92 :-/

You would think one heavily muscled 250lbs man would save them the money of needing to hire more different people for that team. Do they weigh everyone everyday before they leave? What if you get hired at 195lbs but you “carbload” and hit the helicopter weighing 220lbs?

While heavylifter could stand to lean up a little, walking around weighing that much less than you have been used to for years would take an overhaul of your eating and even the way you think of yourself. I couldn’t imagine weighing 200lbs at this point.

Good luck on your new endeavor and be sure to keep us all posted. Mazel mazel man!

Whenever I want to lean out I run. Nothing fancy, just a couple of miles at a good clip. Do this maybe 4 times per week.

Good luck, hope you get the job.

This is making me think back to about two weeks ago when we landed Aeromed. The EMT riding with the crew had to be around 220ish. I know that guy didn’t pass any kind of weigh in pre-flight. Sometimes I think it’s more a who you know kinda thing.

Still, I need to get my BF under 20%. Lately I’ve been considering the pursuit of a nursing degree. Who knows, maybe the requirements are a little relaxed for flight nurses and I’d much rather be doing that that than inspecting houses on my off days.

I know that one of the flight docs is ex military and has a pretty solid build that has to put him in the 225-230lb range. But hey, he’s the doc :-]

My brother is a Marine and one of my cousins is a cav scout in the Army. They both tell me the same thing. Something like, “get out and run you fat fuck!”.

This is a pretty good pic of Aeromed landing on a rollover wreck
