Squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses, as heavy as you can. Also, several sets of “pushing away from the dinnertable”, something pretty much every coach on T-Nation recommends if you want to get shredded. Also, post some stats and maybe a picture if you want advice and not flames.

What he said, front squats especially involve the abs as stabilizers. Dieting gives you abs, not crunching. No reason not to work them though, work up to doing hanging pikes and your abs will get strong as all hell.
well,to get visible abs you have to clean up your diet(lucky for me,i dont care about abs),for strong abs i prefer hanging leg raises
Hanging Leg Raises and cable crunches are two of my main exercises. Of course, I don’t need to mention that you need to eat right.

Diet more than anyting. My skinny-assed 9 year old son has a great six-pack without doing a single crunch. We all have a nice six-pack under the fat.

I work out at home with free weights only, is there an exercise I can do to immitate the cable crunches? Or is there a similar exercise I could do with free weights?
If your bench can decline, weighted decline situps (plate behind your neck) are a favorite of mine.
Standing side-bends are pretty decent as well and can be done with just freeweights.
Kill yourself.
SQUATS AND MILK!
Like the above said, basic exercises and go hard and heavy.
I also like sprints and pullups as well.
I too haven’t done a situp in forever, yet I got a 4 pack.

Weighted crunches can be a substitute. If you can fashion a decline bench, use that, too.

Wouldn’t less milk be better when cutting to see abs?
For visible abs, DON’T squat, DL, row, or any of the other compound movements.
Core strengthing exercises don’t do jack shit for developing the visible abdominal musculature. Nobody ever got a sixpack from squatting. The very notion of that is insane, no matter the claim of any huge powerlifter guy with a bigass gut.
Every dynamic ab exercise has to be variation of a crunch. If it’s not a variation of a crunch, then it’s not a direct ab exercise. The bread and butter of your routine are conventional crunches and reverse crunches.
Always do crunches with your hips bent at 90 degrees. It inhibits the flexors and makes the RA do the bulk of the work.
As you get better at doing bodyweight crunches, move your arms further and further back. This will make it harder. The reverse is true for holding your arms out in front of you.
Do regular, full reps, as well as static holds at peak contraction, as well as eccentric overloads.

No, that ain’t how you build abs. Back to the dungeon with you.

Thanks, bud. It was a joke.
If you really wanted to get technical, though… Squats DO work your abs very well, and with enough milk (calories) you’d be able to build them with squats and milk, they just might not be visible.

Wasn’t there an article saying this was false in the last 2 days?
