you could always do them in your socks

Chucks are good general purpose lifting shoes and I wear them…but if you want to max your raw or single-ply squat you should consider a shoe with a raised heel, at least once you approach a 500 raw squat.[/quote]
And the best lifter of ALL TIME (Donnie Thompson, WR holder with a 2850 total) wears CHUCKS. If they’re good enough for him, they’re damn well good enough for you.

Crap.
Checkmate.
I found a really cheap (on sale for $12) pair of Italian track shoes at Target. They’re nice and flat, provide good side support, AND they’re also pretty good for runnning. Just check around the sale bins at the big stores. You’ll find something you like.
You want to stay away from runnning shoes! That is most important. My strength coach used to have us wear work boots or Doc Martens but never running shoes.
I just use Nike cross trainers similar to frees but with more cushion. They were @ $70.
Anyways, as you were…

I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the highest total in the IPF (as Ramo was talking about).
I have used Chucks and they are excellent, but the best ones I have used have been a retro Nike. They are basically a Chuck, but they are made with a much thicker leather upper and are wider for my duck feet. They give much more ankle support. I had to find them on Ebay and I paid about $30 for those.

Probably the old nike dunks. a great shoe to squat in. adidas had a similar design called the pro model (same kind Coan used to squat in) that I also liked until they discontinued them and then reintroduced them as ``retro’’ at almost 3x the original price.

I wouldn’t really call Donnie Thompson’s squat ATG. I think if you really want to go ATG (and not this anything-below-parallel-is-ATG), then you’ll pretty much have to wear a heeled shoe, or get very flexible. Even then, it’s easier and more comfortable with a heeled shoe.
I’ve never seen anyone be able to do a full squat without their knees coming over their toes, in which case a heeled shoe helps. And even if you could, your hips will probably hate you forever for it.

You do not need to be very flexible to squat atg without a heel, if you can’t you should focus on that more then relying on a heel.

Why do weightlifters wear a heel?

Power lift without VS Weightlifting shoe - YouTube video show you difference for a weightlifter, we are talking about simple squats though. All you have to do is go down and up the heel is not going to help you much with this at all. If the only way you can hit below parallel is with a heel you need to work on your flexibility. A olympic shoe is great though, I prefer them, yet a chuck is more then good enough.
Dave Fucking Tate wears Chucks. Dave Tate is awesome, that’s why his middle name is a swear word. Therefore, Chucks are awesome. You should buy Chucks.
Hasn’t Dave been doing all his training in Metal squat shoes recently?
i go barefooted lol.
Imho if you can’t squat ATG, fix the problem instead of masking it with other contraptions…
Chucks, oly shoes or a dedicated pair of squat boots ie metal or the polish brand thats name escapes me.
The wider stance guys seem to like a shoe with no heal ie chucks, whilst those with a somewhat closer stance seem to like something with a heel.
My stance is not particulary wide but I get on fine in with chucks, although I will be buying a dedicted pair of squat shoes this year.
