Good Exercises for Abs?

I’ve been a subscriber to T-Nation for a while now. I am getting back into the gym routine. As I approach the age of 30 i’ve noticed that i’ve been putting a few extra pounds around the waist line. I’m wondering if anyone could suggest a good workout for abs, especially if there is anything I can do at home when I’m unable to get to the gym.
Thanks guys for all your suggestions.
Cheers!

All i use are L-sits and standing ab pull downs [reverse good morning]. As for accessory work that is. Things like squats, snatch, clean, OH press DL, and all the other big boys are great abdominal work as well.

Maybe i do some walk outs and full planks [hands overhead] as well.

In other news: no amount of ab work will remove pounds from your waistline. You need to reduce your overall body fat to reduce flab at the waist. since you are a long time reader you should know how to do that with training and nutrition planning.

good luck sir,

Quoted for emphasis.

squats

Hanging leg raises

But you have to burn fat to get rid of fat, not just strengthen the muscle under the fat.

I like it!

There’s a lot of good exercises in the following articles:

That being said I like squats while holding a 25 lb plate in front of me, crunches, hanging knee raises, planks, and 3 point pushups.

Table push-aways and fork put downs will go along way to help reduce body fat.

use an ab wheel, those are beasts and hurts like a bitch when you do them right for 20 reps.

Believe it or not, squats actually help your abs. At least that’s what i heard?

just wondering if you can articulate what the two sentences I quoted above have to do with one another. They seem like non-sequiturs to me.

what makes you think your abs need work?
Are the muscles visibly small in proportion to the rest of your muscles. It doesn’t sound like that is the answer, as your first sentence above suggests that you aren’t likely able to see your abs very clearly.
Are your abs clearly a weak link in your strength? Are you failing heavy maximum lifts (like your max squat) attempts because your ab strength is holding you back? It doesn’t sound like that is the case either…

While it is probably the case (unless you have reason to believe otherwise) that your abs are proportional, both in terms of size and in terms of strength, if you DO feel that you need work on your abs, I always find that the best way to do so is to lift near your maximum on your biggest lifts (squats, deadlifts, bench press, rows). When doing so, I always find that my abs get a good workout.

However, what it really sounds like you are asking is how you can lose a few pounds around your waist (I really wish that you didn’t get your abdominal fat mixed up with your abdominal muscles, however, especially as you say you are a T-Nation reader). Well, read up on some articles here about fatloss. God knows there are plenty of 'em!

for the longest time i underestimated planks

try those n some hanging leg raises with no back support
