In the q&a section of 5/3/1 you say if someone wanted to get bigger you’d have them do 5/3/1 BBB & GOMAD. Well I want to
I was thinking of using the sample diet from the beyond book in the BBB 3 month challenge (that looks like it’d fit a 200lb guy wanting to add weight) aswell as 3 shakes & the milk.
Too much for a 200lb ecto? I do have a VERY high metabolism.
Never done GOMAD before so just looking for thoughts & opinions.
I’m not familiar with the full GOMAD diet but here’s what I’ve been doing. Two years ago I hired John Meadows to help me cut some weight. That was a tremendous learning experience for me. Using what I learned I adjusted the diet plan to basically consume enough for weight maintenance and then I just drink a 1/2 gallon chocolate milk which is roughly 1,200 calories. Why not just eat the calories? Because I’m poor, saving for a wedding, and the thought of eating another 1000 calories makes me want to puke, so this is the next best thing.
My 1RM’s in each lift have gone up quite a bit in just about 4 cycles of 5/3/1 and I feel pretty darn good during my workout too. I added in some conditioning I read about on the JTS website and rotate that with something John recommended and my BF is actually in a good place too, especially considering the fact that I’ve added about 10-12lbs in bodyweight during that same period.
Id use the diet plan that you can follow for the next 6-12 months. It’ll take at least 5-7 years to get a solid base and another 10 to really move some weight and add size. So develop solid eating habits today.
I believe you should develop good eating habits to last you a lifetime.
Thanks Jim. I liked the way you set out your diet in the book. Nice & simple.
Been training for about 6 years, gone from 105lb to 187lb @12%bf. Yes, I was ridiculously scrawny, but the ecto part has kept my bf low consistently. I’ve just hit a wall with weight gain, been stagnant for a while now. I tried throwing down a lot of junk added to a ‘clean’ diet but like you said in the book, it made me feel like crap. So just looking for a simplistic way of breaking this wall down. I don’t do fancy, just like to get my head down & get the job done.
PS. BF is of no concern to me as far as gaining weight, I couldn’t give a rats ass about looking good on the beach. But eating junk makes me feel like shit mentally & physically.

If you have the money, I would recommend hiring John Meadows to help you with your diet. He gives you like 16-weeks if I remember correctly. Not only does he get you where you need to be, it’s one hell of an education on nutrition. I learned a lot with that experience.
Cash is a bit tight at the minute, recently got laid off & just doing bits here & there, my trade is virtually dead now so I’m re-training in January for a new direction.

Sorry to hear that man; I’ve been there before and I’m actually going back to school shortly to basically do the same thing you’re doing. Best of luck! - J
