I was talking to a defense attorney that worked for a large corporation that said his company keeps a lot of money on hand each year for frivolous law suits. They, on average, offer people $10,000 to go away. Any more then that and they fight the case but for 10k or less it is cheaper to pay idiots then to fight them. So chances are this “poor women” will be 10k richer.
Mean while small business owners need to keep ridiculously high insurance policy’s on hand for just such an occasion.

Many suits allege damages in excess of $75,000 because that satisfies the minimum “amount in controversy” requirement to get the case into federal court where jurisdiction is based on diversity of citizenship.
