Yeah, I tried some left handed shot throws when my right wrist was screwed about 5 years ago and got 33’ compared to 50’ right handed at the time. The flexibility point brings up one of the points I was going to make:
About the paradox, I’ve given it a lot of thought. Any or all of three things are probably happening.
First, it could be that your “force production surface” (explanation available if needed) is so thick in the fast range that all the strength improvements you have made at the slow and medium locations have not affected it in the throwing range.
If this is so, you will probably have noticed that the lighter and less awkward implements in the HG have not improved as much as the heavier and more awkward implements.
Second it could be that when you throw the T&F implements, you are simply too worn out from all the other training you do to throw far.
Third, (and this is what you were thinking) you form isn’t adequate to take advantage of your new strength. If this is so, then either you are not telling your body to do the right things, or its unable to do what you are telling it to. Lack of flexibility would be one thing preventing you from hitting the right positions. Given your last post, this seems like a likely culprit.
Edit: Or are you more flexible on the right than on the left?
And by the way, given how handsome you are, its amazing you ever threw the shot further than Dan John. Shot is the event most susceptible to the “ugly throws far” principle. Dan John himself said something to the effect of “I’m not ugly enough to throw shot.”
I’d had a lot of practice using my right hand/arm when my left arm was immobilized several times, Jack, so the transition was a little bit easier.
Whining is whining, punnyguy, and I been trained and raised better.
We all hitting it hard here bunny. You haven’t even begun to hit your potential yet.
As I said, I’d ask Mr Darby first. Had to research the force production surface, deep. All my throws in the highlands are going up but I suspect that’s mainly cause I’m practicing them a lot more. Good point that I may be too worn out and need to cut back on some of my training. I’m way more flexible on my right than left. Left hip is always a problem. Where I was sewn up there has always remained tight. Went out today and threw the shot and disc to do a little test. After warmups, I threw the shot 5 times facing front, hi 35’3", lo 33’4". 5 power positon, hi 40’5", lo 38’6". 5 rotatioal, hi 40’3, lo 39’6". So using scientific deduction, ain’t getting shit from form. I’m also guilty of going balls to the wall everytime I throw. I’m committed to trying to ease back and work the form rather than trying to nail everythrow. First meets Apr 24 so I’ll see how it works. I really appreciate the imput. Why we all come here.
PS, I’ll try to scowl more when throwing to overcome the handsome hinderence.
I didn’t realize you were doing spin in the shot now. Try a few throws going intentionally slow out of the back, but trying to keep your weight well over your right in the middle of the ring. As your right foot lands, keep it turning as fast and far as you can. Hit it hard only at the very end. If your weight is not balanced over your right foot, it will turn very little, no matter how hard you try. When you hit it right, even 50% speed throws will go pretty far. On some days, these are my farthest throws. You will feel the foot turning in the middle, and when you get a particularly good turn, the shot will go to the extreme left of the sector.
With the distances you are getting from the power position, your throws should be in the 14-15m range once the technique finally comes around.
It is MJ, it is. When it all come together an you have that big throwgasm it ain’t nuttin but sweet magic.
Thanks Math, ran around the kitchen once in tribute to your upcoming running.
Thanks for the input, Carl. I can see it in my mind. Gonna throw tomorrow and will concentrate on those points. Fightin the urge to run out and throw right now. Tried to back off a little tonight and will on some of my upcoming workouts. Enough of with this angst shit I’ve been having. Time to train.
Thought I was taking a vid but my camera has this series of photos setting. I’m so not a techie. Anyway, shot training, trying Carl’s advise. Worked good. I have found, Carl, that if I tuck the shot lower on the jawline rather than high on the neck like most spinners I get a better distance. Could be cause I’m dropping my elbow.
and blurry ass release. Productive day. Estimate throwing between 80-90 percent and hit a 41’7". Got in a 500m swim after. Good day. Now I need to work on my farmer’s tan.
One more. Evil incarnate. My wife’s dachshund. 12# thinks it can run off with a 13.2# iron ball. Caught the thing lifting it’s leg on my shot when I wasn’t looking.

I hold the shot pretty low also. 41’7’ is a good improvement for 1 day. Keep working that drill until you can put them down the left sector line at will.

Hah! Best laugh of the day!
Ah, you sir, are a raconteur extraordinaire indeed.
I’d like to claim I taught the little shit a lesson but that’s momma’s baby and can do no wrong. I do have a good recipe for gaegogi, though.
Off work today, lots of running around, Started day at gym.
