Thanks kmc, yeah, trying to work on the 56# for height. More explosive stuff and faster on everything. Getting some weird looks at the gym on some of the stuff.

Hel, your workout endurance is phenomenal. You brewing some crystal meth over there in Alabama? Us old guys are supposed to get tired more quickly.
I do appreciate the feedback about olders lifters losing explosive power more than pure strength…this fits my personal experience well and helps me feel a little less insane. But of course, I should have figured this out anyways, because that’s why the Master’s OL records are far less impressive than Master’s PL records. At least that’s part of the reason, I’m sure the other reason is PL is far more popular now and, contrary to some people’s opinion, probably a lot easier on the joints.
I’m sure you remember the “experts” in the seventies warning us how “deadly” squats and deadlifts were to the body. In fact, I never really tried max lifts in these my entire senior year for fear of “breaking something.” Funny how powerlifting now is a “core” builder and therefore “good” for you. Doc
Mathineer, Neider press is basically a bench press, standing up, AOL Video - Serving the best video content from AOL and around the web - AOL.com .So you’ve got to really push the bar out fast and bring it back just as fast. The Neider single arm bar Press is best shown here at the very start of the vid Dummbell Snatch Swing Upright Neider Press Grip Training - YouTube .Both were used and invented by Bill Neider, 1960 Olympic Shot Put champion. Trick on the single arm DB snatch is to make it one smooth move. The 56# weight over bar has a chain on it, that’s what I’m carrying in my avatar. If you pause at all during the pull, the links lose tension and the damn thing goes nowhere, except on top of your head maybe.
Doc, soon as I walk in a gym my energy levels go up. I don’t think I’d make a good home lifter like I lot of you. I just love the atmosphere and the enviroment of a gym. Speaking of expert advice. My High School lifting was limited to a Universal and a leg Press machine. Didn’t start really hittin the weights til I went in the service. Another airman, Gene Bell (yeah, that Gene Bell) worked at the base gym. Really urged me to get into powerlifting, “Shit Harry, all them jumps gonna fuck up your legs quick enough. You don’t need to be squattin.” And, “You guys swim too much to put on the right kinda muscle.” With encouragement like that from a world champion I was off and running.
Need to be practicing my throws technique but it will not stop raining. So hit the gym after work tonight.
Off today and it actually didn’t rain. 0500 hit the river for a swim. Waters moving real fast cause of all the rain runoff. Swim out was fast as hell and the swim back in was literally a crawl. Felt great. Finally got the grass cut, had to set the deck on the mower at it’s highest for the first past. Took one of the dogs to the vet for annual check up/shots. Stopped over to brother’s place for the lunch special. Hopefully I’ll finally get some throwing in this evening. Mom, wife, and sisters’ in law, nieces, etc. have been on a canning binge and putting up all kinds of stuff for winter. Guess I won’t starve.
“Judo” Gene Lebell? Remember him well, although mainly form his rasslin’ career. Thanks for the links. Actually met Werner in Kaiserslautern, Germany right after he placed 3rd in the 88 Olympics. Huge man and incredibly in shape for his size. His coach and he were really doing some innovative stuff for the shot put. Have some films of him throwing but they’re in VHS and PAL (european) format. Have to get them out and see if I can convert them.
Tonight
Met wife at the gym afterwork. I must of looked looked like the proverbial wet dog. Soaked to the bone. Poured all day. Dried off, changed into gym clothes in the sauna. Fingers and toes were completely wrinkled.

Hey hel, as an aside to my reply to you over in Old Lardass, the Judo camp I went to was run by Paul Maruyama. He was on the first USA Olympic Judo Team in 1964. He was also a serving Major (back in 1982) in your USAF, and an instructor at the AF Academy. Nice guy, about 150 lbs, 3 ft tall, and strong as an ox. I got to play with him a couple times, and he used (abused) me like a soapy mop.
Last night got in a med to heavy leg night. Some light throws tonight and that’ll be it til Saturday. Weather has been beautiful here the last few days.
