Goin' Kickin' and Screamin'

Hel,

Everytime I see your avatar, I write a note to self: don’t rob this guy’s house. I can still picture the poor guy’s head who breaks in when you are getting ready for a meet, holding that freekin war hammer. Or the shop steward who asks you for a favor again. Anyway, glad you are enjoying the Games, it sounds like a load of fun.

I don’t know Jack, sometimes from what hel writes, I think his wife might just take any intruder out of the picture.

Glad to hear you had a good time. That’s what it’s all about.

BTW- looking long, lean and strong in the pic…

Way to go big guy. Hope you can make it to Banner Elk sometime. Good job at the games

Thanks all. Like Powerlifting, T&F, oly lifting, etc., everyone at the meet had their favorite lift. Zercher’s was definitely common to all. Got some very good coaching on the sheaf toss and a spin technique for the weight over bar. One guy watching my first throw with the 56# for distance said “discus thrower”? “Yup”. Told me something I was doing wrong because I was used to throwing a certain way.

Guy just came back from Scotland where he finished 3rd at the worlds so I listened. My next throw went 4’ farther. He said “no more coaching, you actually pay attention”. By the end of the day, and several beers each, it was agreed that becuase the Scots raped all through France my Cajun side was sure to have some Scotish blood in it somewhere. Really good time.

Hit the gym with the wife this morning. Right trap and hamstring are a little sore. Did some light legs and back to get everything lose. Back at the regular stuff tomorrow. Want to really increase all my numbers at the next meet. I do pay attention. Ate really big at Mom’s house today. Time to kick back.

Congrats on all the fun and lernin at the meet!

You’re the man Hel! Congrats on the meet and throwing 4’ further. You’re one of those guys everyone will be watching on youtube when you’re 70 deadlifting 600lbs.

Congrats on the games! I missed them here, in fact I saw the announcement for them the day of, at about 6 p.m., while looking through the paper and having a beer… definitely something I want to try in the future.

Pete, it’s the most fun you can have out of bed and totally different than any other atheletic competition you’ve probably ever been in before.
So, I’ve decided I need more explosiveness in the legs. Do hurdle hops every now and then but I need to do sprints. Back in the day I use to be pretty fast.
I haven’t felt so uncoordinated in a long time. If I did a 30 sec. 100m I’d be amazed. Legs felt like they were going straight up and down and flat footed. Did 5x50, 5x100. The motor skills need some tweaking. I can definitely tell they will help get some of the explosiveness back, though. Look out Bolt. I’m right behind you. Needed to regain my dignity so left the track and went for a swim.

Going to be adding trap bar deadlifts to my workouts and some cable pull/lifts. Have to see what I can come up with on those.
Forgot to tell of my Senior moment this weekend. Almost didn’t get to the meet on time. Left with all kind of time to spare. Driving nice and slow, enjoying the sun coming up, stop for a coffee. Almost to Chattanoga when I see the sign “You are now entering the Eastern Time Zone”. Damn, forgot about that, just lost an hour. Stomped on the gas. Made it just in time. Duh.

Hey, Harry!!! Where have ya been hiding out?

Not hiding, JW, working. Here’s one for your JW question of the day, “If there’s no work, why we working overtime to not do it?” Basically it’s been work, gym, bed, repeat. Ok, shower’s in there, too. USPS says the mails dryin up so they won’t hire and overtime is being used. Great if you want the money, not so great if you have a life outside work. Off today and trying to catch up on stuff.

On a better note. Yesterday, the mayor of Ringold, Ga called the mayor of Ocala, Fla and said something to the effect of my highland guys are better than your highland guys. There are meets at both cities on 3 Oct and both meets are sanctioned by SHAG (Southeastern Highland Atheletic Group). So each city gets to pick 6 open and 6 masters (40 and over) to compare to the other city’s results. I was very pleased when I was chosen to be one of the 6 Master’s. Plan on doing my best.

My lifting lately has been composed mainly of heavy, explosive, heavy, explosive, etc. Been hitting the zerchers rael hard and deadlifting with the trap bar. Also incorporate close grip power snatchs into my workout on the advise of some of the other throwers. Made a slosh pipe for practicing the caber. That thing is a bitch. So right now my training’s geared for the games on 3 Oct. Hopefully management will be forced to hire some temps soon and things will get back to normal. Going to try and catch up on the threads today.

Sounds like a great games, hel. Good Job.

working sucks. there has to be a better way…

Amen!

Just got off work. Getting ready to head to the gym. Know you’re all in a hurry to get to the festivities. What festivities? Can it be your not celebrating? (insert sigh of long suffering resignation) Today is the BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE!!! Number 62 to be exact. Give our guys and girls in blue a toast and a prayer tonight.

Thanks for the info Hel. Have a good workout.

Hey, Hel, just catching up with you. Read your new thread start to finish. You really seem to have a joy about life that I admire…I doubt you’ll ever need a shrink.
I’m enjoying my latest comeback, especially glad to be squatting decent again, much like yourself. How did you get past that shoulder problem?
You made a comment that struck a sore spot with me…that you never really hit a PR because you cant compete with the big numbers of youth. Of course there are always some freaks of nature that may defy age altogether, but for me I know I wont ever get “real” PR’s again. However, I do get fired up in trying to get “comeback PR’s” or past 50 PR’s or whatever else I can think of to redefine PR’s so I can chase them.
Have you noticed a difference in the various lifts as to how close you can get to now compared to your younger days? I am right at about 70-80% now, and on my more hopeful days I think I might add 5-8% to that before I get too old period or irreparably damage something. I am frustrated that of all my lifts, my powerclean is stuck at a lower percentage than my other lifts, while my squat is coming up quickly and might hit 90% in the next few months if I keep pushing hard.
And powersnatching…good God it kills my shoulders. How are you pulling that off (or up!) Doc

Life is good, Doc. Just got to get to the point where you realize it. 30 years of almost losing it on a regular basis helped me figure it out. It’s all fun now.
As for the shoulder, it’ll never be loose but I’m use to it when I squat now. First couple off set are just to get me under the bar.

The only PR’s I really pay attention to are distance. My lifting is a means to the end of throwing things farther. I still haven’t figured out the correlation between amount lifted and distance thrown in each event. If I ever stay with the same routine long enough I may start tracking my “new” prs.

My bench has probably lost the least of my lifts from younger days. Course I always considered my bench my worst lift and I don’t think I took it as far as I could have back when. Squat is no where near where it was and deadlift’s a pretty good distance behind, too. Don’t even remember what I use to do in the Olys.

The powerclean relies a lot on speed and that’s the one thing seems to go first. Whereas we can keep our strength up, the explosiveness we had goes first. I’ve noticed this in T&F. Based on some of the lifting numbers we olders throwers are putting up the shot and discus should be going farther than it is.
My shoulders don’t really bother me snatching or lifting. It’s only when I try and get the left one behind my head that I have a problem.

And now for something completely different (with a nod to Monty Python)
