Glute Tightness from Squats

Recently when I’ve been squatting, my upper glutes have been getting stupidly tight during my squats. It doesn’t occur right away but maybe after the 3rd set I start to feel it! It gets to the point where its painful to stand up straight. I warm up with foam rolling the entire area inc legs then warming up by starting off light and working up to my working weight. The tightness doesn’t hang around too long and by the evening its fine. In 2 years of lifting I’ve never had this problem.

Any ideas on how I can fix it?

Is this concurrent with lower back pain? If so it might be a piriformis issue. Stretch and roll it daily and you wont have a problem.

I don’t seem to feel it in lower back at all, it feels totally in the upper glutes. Almost like its being over stretched in the hole because it happens with all variations of squats. After I stand up tall then bend over slightly it gets so tight!!

Hm thats strange. Keep stretching and rolling the glutes all the time. If it persists, see a doctor.

buy a hockey ball (that’s FIELD hockey to all you confused canadians), sit on it and internally/externally rotate your hip. That should alleviate the pain and tightness.
