GLENN PENDLAY Q&A

Hey Glenn and Christian,

I recently started doing the power clean and I’m really liking it. Now I want to start the snatch too but I have a few problems. The main problem is that my shoulders don’t have the mobility to do them properly. I can’t get my shoulders back so far when doing a deep squat… Is there any way to fix this?

Second, I lack some hip mobility and hamstring flexibility. Are there some drills to loosen up these areas too?

Greatly appreciated, Vince

Hey Glenn, I know you probably do this on an individual basis, but is there a certain height cut-off you look for in someone between the 105 and 105+ class? I’m 6’2" at about 233 pounds, so I’m wondering if I should go straight to SHW, or just ride out 105kg as long as I can and make the jump to 105kg+ when I need to. Thanks.

Hey Glenn, in your opinion what would be the effect if someone had to do a lot of push ups most days in addition to what they were usually doing? I’m expecting to have to do push ups at night for some school activity for the next 5 weeks or so. I’m only going to be working out 2x per week during this period due to time constraints, basically close to full body each time. My plan to “get around it” is by stopping around 30, for example, if I can do 50 so I don’t go near failure but I’m interested to see if you think this could cause any issues or the best way to go about them so they don’t interfere with my actual workouts.

Thanks!

Here is Jon North snatching 160kg in the 94kg weight class, I think one of the best snatches by an American in the last couple of years.

Here is a little something I wrote about how Jon trains and lives… just trying to get some props from the general population for amateur sport in general, folks that toil away to lift more, run faster, throw further, aren’t in the “mainstreem” sports like football/basketball/baseball but still deserve respect…

I was watching live -it was awesome.

Do you think that having to do 3 C&J’s in a row affected Jon’s performance? (I’ve seen the video of Jon’s 185 at the 2010 Arnold.) How much time is there “normally” between lifts at events like the Nationals and the Olympics?

The time wasn’t a factor. Jon never jerks well if he doesn’t taper for a meet and rest his legs… some lifters just cant jerk on tired legs and Jon is one of them. The big jerk will be there when we taper our training for a big meet.

That’s pretty individual. Wes Barnett was 6’3" or 6’4" and he was a hell of a 105kg lifter… but for many that are your height, Super is the way to go. Just too individual to really give any hard and fast rule…

Something that might interest you guys… Matt Johnson who is IMO the absolute best guy around these days when it comes to nutrition explains what he has the athletes he works with (Including the guys I coach) do for pre and post workout nutrition. I learn something every time I talk to him, figured you guys might also enjoy hearing him explain what he does. Just follow the link…

Usually when you do stuff like this your performance suffers for a week or two, then you get used to it, and you go back to normal.

Glenn, bothering you again. Can you name for me any 6’2" (or thereabouts) int’l-level Olympic lifters? I would like to look up some videos of them to study their snatch/clean set-up, and then execution to see how they work with their leverages. So far I’ve been looking at the SHW, like Chigishev who is 6’1.5". Thanks.

Glenn,

Hope this isn’t inappropriate, but it shouldn’t be as it’ll give you a chance to plug your product: Is there any type of discount for Pendlay bars and bumpers for an upstart, struggling weightlifting club? Thanks.

Szymon Kolecki is in the 94 kg class and I’ve seen him listed as tall as 6’3", although he’s probably around 6’1".

Either way you go, you’ll still have to deal with short, fat guys like me. I’m a 105+, but unfortunately don’t lift like a 105+, and I really don’t need to be carrying around this much lard.

Hah, thanks dude. I also just found Ihor Shymechko, who I watched online at the Worlds. The guy has been listed around 6’3", he’s a beast! But yeah I know I still have to lift against you 105+ shorties, hehe. What are your lifts if you don’t mind me asking?

My C&J is 100, 105, My snatch? Well, the moon needs to be in alignment with the sun and Jupiter in order to get the right gravitational pull to help me get the bar up, otherwise it ain’t happening. I’ve had issues with my snatch. I’m also now going to play my old guy card and say that I’m 5’8", 235, but I’m a Masters lifter, so try not to judge too harshly.

Here’s a cool series of videos, 6 in all, filmed by Kolecki’s father of the entire Polish weightlifting team training. It’s kind of neat to see all of the weight classes train together and compare their lifts. The guy in the orange sweatshirt is, I believe, Kolecki’s brother. I think they’re roughly the same height, probably same weight class. Kolecki is the guy with the shadow goatee and tattered sweat pants. If you have 60 minutes to spare, watch all 6 videos - great lifting. BTW - That coach is now head coach for U.S.A. Weightlifting.

Here’s a video of Marcin Dolega. He’s 6’ even and in the 105 (not 105+) class. Probably not as tall and light as you were looking for, but close enough to be of interest.

Andy, I am sorry I couldnt come up with names… but I can tell you this, from my experiences at various worlds and pan-ams… I look eye to eye or pretty damn close to it with a lot of both the 105ers and the supers…

Glenn, thanks. Apparently, my coach is one step ahead of me and is already working something out with MuscleDriver.

Man those Polish videos were awesome. Some of the best Oly lifting vids I’ve seen on youtube. And yeah USAW is real lucky to have that guy as their coach!

Hi Glenn, thanks for all the great info.

What would be your advice for training around a wrist injury?

My wrist took a bit of a knock in Janurary whilst snowboarding and meant that any wrist loading during extension wasn’t on the cards. It was getting better but has done downhill recently (not sure why). I can do all pulling movements and cleans without pain, but going overhead with any weight isn’t possible.

The plan I worked out with my coach is during recovery to do all painfree movements as usual and keep anything overhead to just the broomstick (no pain with such a light “weight”) to keep the movement pattern. When I first came back from injury we neglected all overhead movements and my flexibilty suffered.

My main goal is to get healthy again but I desperately want to keep as much as possible of what I’ve worked so hard for.

Any advice would be great.
