GLENN PENDLAY Q&A

Hi Glenn, thanks for all the great info.

What would be your advice for training around a wrist injury?

My wrist took a bit of a knock in Janurary whilst snowboarding and meant that any wrist loading during extension wasn’t on the cards. It was getting better but has done downhill recently (not sure why). I can do all pulling movements and cleans without pain, but going overhead with any weight isn’t possible.

The plan I worked out with my coach is during recovery to do all painfree movements as usual and keep anything overhead to just the broomstick (no pain with such a light “weight”) to keep the movement pattern. When I first came back from injury we neglected all overhead movements and my flexibilty suffered.

My main goal is to get healthy again but I desperately want to keep as much as possible of what I’ve worked so hard for.

Any advice would be great.
There is really nothing intelligent I can say about a sore wrist beyond wrap the hell out of it and don’t do exercises that hurt too bad. That and time to heal are all I have ever found that work…

As far as training around it, sounds like you guys have it worked out about as good as you can, dont do what hurts, do slightly more of anything that doesnt hurt. Think of it as an opportunity to get some other part of your lifting a bunch stronger, like y our pull or your squat.

A bit off topic, but there are a couple of fairly interesting articles over at the CaliforniaStrength website, here is the link.

And, for fans of Jumpin’ Jon North, on my facebook page, scroll down a bit and you can find a video of him getting absolutely punked trying to shoot my 500 S&W Magnum pistol with one hand. It is the most powerful handgun in the world by a wide margin, and is not kind to those who try to shoot it with one hand. Its a hilarious video.

With no new training questions, I thought a little humor might be appropriate…

I enjoyed the articles. Are there plans for any articles on the application of the 5x5 system?

I here Mr. Wallace is working very hard to produce more content…

Cool, I´m looking forward to it.

Hey Glenn:

So after one month of learning the power snatch I have progressed a bit. Never have done it before but watching videos and trial & error I am muddling through. Today’s WO was like this to start:

Bar work
95 - all singles, was resting little at first, maybe 30 secs, then about 1-2 mins for last sets.
100
105
110
115
120
125
130
135
140
145 - failed @ 3 attempts, actually last attempt was the highest, bar made it to forehead height but I couldn’t make the catch.

Yes, it’s lbs not kilos - DOH! No straps, hands out almost to collars. Power snatch from the floor.

My question is: How often can I snatch? What loading/reps would you recommend to improve? At this light weight, it doesn’t feel very taxing on me - did today’s session in conjunction with a neural charge WO. I have been doing singles because I can get my setup just right and then give everything for that one rep.

What do you think? Thanks! M.

If your main goal is the snatch, I suggest doing it every single day, as heavy as you can.

If your main goal is to get better at weightlifting I presume you’d follow the same approach? Both lifts, heavy, often? Where would you fit in squatting or any other supplemental exercises?

Glenn, I used the Eleiko bar for the first time on Tuesday, it tore my hands up (two new ripped callouses). I now have to wear tape at every session. I was thinking of just using straps for max snatch attempts, do your athletes use straps a lot to deal with callous rips?

Also, any tips on shaving down callouses?

Wear straps… use a pumice stone, and buy a Pendlay bar, lol.

So I’ve taken this advice and snatched and squatted three days in a row now. So far I feel okay. Should I be seeing an increase in strength, decrease, or about the same? So far it’s been about the same, but I’m also not trying to kill myself given the frequency. I’m expecting strength to go down somewhat due to fatigue. Technique seems better - at least in my opinion, but what the hell do I know?

Thanks for fielding questions, Glenn.

you have to go by feel… some days will be heavy some days you wont be able to go that heavy. Its not really possible to know, the important thing is to go by feel and push as hard as you can each day without pushing yourself into the ground…

Glenn, is this the correct form for the row you invented, i.e., Pendlay row? What are the benefits of Pendlay rows compared to the average row?

Thats the idea, to extend the upper back at the same time as you row and use the arms to bring the bar to the chest…

For those who love weightlifting, or, just like to watch a clash of titans and international powerhouses in any sport, you might want to watch the California vs. Ireland/Scotland competition on November 6th.

The first annual clash of these two perennial powerhouses takes place direct from San Ramon, California and Dublin, Ireland and will be viewable in its entirity on the internet. Details can be found at Californiastregnth.com

Hi Glen,

And I’ll be sure to catch that meet.

I recently sent you an email regarding purchasing some equipment, but perhaps it didn’t make it through to you. The gist of it was that I was wondering whether you could get stuff to New Zealand.

My email is bradjosse at gmail dot com

Cheers

Hey Glenn. Iv’e been experiencing low sex drive, lack of height, loss of drive to train, and my numbers are going backwards. I got my test levels checked out and everything came back normal. You train guys that train every single day and sometimes multiple times a day. Does this thing ever happen from training? Is their anything I can do about it? I’m not using and never have used any “supplements” btw. Thank you for your time on these forums, its much appreciated.

What is your age and what was the T level your test showed?

Im 19 and my level was 520ng. I got the test done around 6pm.

BTW, for those of you looking to build a home performance gym, Glenn sells so kickass bars and olympic bumper plates. I bought 2 bumpers sets (the training ones, which are cheaper but just as good for training purposes) and a women’s bar (already had a men’s bar).

Add a prowler, blast straps, power rack and a bench to that and you are all set. A home gym in which you can do any high performance exercise you want without being banned from the gym!
I’m actually interested in investing in some Olympic Plates for use at my home commercial gym. Although I’m not necessarily looking for a bar at this time, I’m all ears for good deals there as well!
