Getting Too Much Protein?
drmzappas wrote:
Truely the body only needs 0.5-0.8g/bw to stay healthy. And protein if eaten excessively does not turn to fat. It is infact excreted. The macro that converts to fat and is stored is excess carbohydrates. Effectively you are not worried much about the kidneys unless your protein is very excessive.

Ultimately the protein or other macros need to be absorbed by the intestines first. And yes proteins are filtered in the kidneys and liver. However if consuming more than 30-40 grams of protein at one sitting, the rest will be excreted via kidneys or BM.

So the only way there is any detrimental effects is if you are consuming greater than 75-100 grams of protein a meal. and why would you do that? thats stupid. Keep intake around 40 grams per meal.
Calories in excess of those needed can turn to fat no matter where they come from.

Other than that, if you are logging into a BODYBUILDING/POWERLIFTING forum that focuses on WEIGHT TRAINING ON A REGULAR BASIS, why would you focus on what SEDENTARY people need to just be “healthy”?

Why the hell does this even need to be explained?

Please find whatever study you think shows the human body can only absorb 40gr in one sitting. I’ll wait.

People arguing with those who actually went to school for this and lift weights very seriously baffle me.

Fact: There is no proven limit for protein absorption especially for ALL PEOPLE and especially not for those with the specific goal of trying to add as much muscle as humanly possible who are also healthy.

Well this rumor mill had to have started somewhere. Can somebody find an online journal or reputable article with the evidence of 30-40grams in one sitting consumption?

And what exactly is “one sitting” ?? I’ve always found that to be a peculiar time frame.

That’s the secret they don’t want you to know. If you stand up and sit down again you can eat another 20-30g of protein.

LOL ! Damn thats funny

Someone get me the “HAHA! Oh WOW” pic, it’s summarizes my view on half the posts in this thread.

I guess when our poor starving ancestors took down a woolly mammoth, they had to cut it into 6oz portions and eat it every 3 hours so they didn’t waste any protein, get renal and liver failure and die.

Prof X: I am not disputing what you are saying. I was agreeing with all your previous posts. And i know the goal of bodybuilding is to gain as much muscle as possible. And to your post i do lift, and compete in bodybuilding. My statement of 0.5 grams was per ACSM studies, and the govwernmental guidelines to maintain appropriate health, just as a reference. But my quote of 30-40 g per sitting was to the very first post and how the other guy said he is 192 or so, and to maintain he needs atleast 1.5 to 2 grams per body weight. And yes if a bodybuilder is larger they can consume more protein. I was not stating that everyone needs 30-40 grams. so yes if a bodybuilder is 250 of LBM he needs 500 grams of protein, or 8 meals of 60 or so grams of protein. at that mass he can neutralize all the amino acids. I probably did not clearly state everything before. sorry for that.

There is no need to apologize. I am sure I thought the same crap when I was 18 years old. It is much like the “8 glasses of water” thing. Everyone apparently KNOWS this is what is needed to be healthy, but no one can remember who said it or WHY it is supposedly correct (it isn’t).

With that in mind, again what you wrote is false.

The truth is WE DON’T KNOW…and the key to being a good biologist or researcher in any scientific field is the immediate realization that we DO NOT have everything figured out yet and while we make great strides every single year in that area, we still don’t even know what causes muscle growth in all instances or why some guys can go from skinny to fucking huge while guys IN THE SAME FAMILY may have a hard time breaking 200lbs.

The human body is extremely complex which means any time you hear anything that acts like we all fit in the same box for specific criteria, you should immediately cry “bullshit”.

You can NOT claim that someone smaller uses less protein than someone bigger.

Why?

Because the genetic ability to build muscle has much to do as well with how you ASSIMILATE what you eat.

That means the “192lbs guy” you mentioned just may utilize more protein in a day than the 250lbs bodybuilder.

That is why the “we only absorb 30gr in one sitting” BS needs to die a quick painful death involving skewers and bamboo shards under fingernails.

PS: I won’t even get into the power the mind has over any progress made but feel it is worth mentioning here.

You won’t gain shit if you think you won’t.
