The Big Fish Small Pond effect does feel pretty cool though. When I put the 5th plate on the gym stops and even the cardio people start craning to look. I’ve seen ~5 other guys hit 405+, one actually hit low 6’s but he sadly doesn’t train there anymore.

You guys all talk about how few people in your gyms can deadlift 405… I’ve only seen one guy deadlift PERIOD in 2 years at the gym I frequent most. He was deadlifting 315 and used paper towels (the ones made for wiping off benches) as his straps.
I’m pretty sure that fucker is the one who got me in trouble for the noise of deadlifting, when his makeshift strap broke at lockout.[/quote]
I lift at a gym co-owned by a bodybuilder and a powerlifter. needless to say, there is a mirror on the back wall with a list of 500+ deads. about 15 people on that list, a couple over 600, and 1 over 700. humbling.
i’ve been stuck at 375 @ 170lbs bw for over a month and starting to get frustrated. i can rack pull 425 for 2 reps, but it’s the freakin’ bottom half that i’m having trouble with. i will get to 405 though, whether the weights like it or not.
I wonder where you guys all lift at. I have never worked out in what would be a “hardcore gym”, but I see people deadlift 405 all the time. Heck, at my high school we had 4 different people at 600 or higher, 5 or 6 at 500, and about 15 at 405. You didn’t even get a shirt until you hit 455.
How does everyone deadlift here? I’ve never used straps, only chalk, and i use a double overhand grip. My PR is 435, weighing 175. Also, I’m 5’10. Anyone else had success with this style?

chalk isnt allowed at my gym so i use straps. no belt. i’m 5’10" 170lbs, average limb/torso proportions i guess.

i train at a “health club” that caters to the older crowd (like, a lot older). i like it cuz the weight room is better than most commercial gyms and usually has between 0 and 4 other people in it when i’m there in the morning. they also don’t say anything about making noise in the weight room since there is a loud-ass zumba class going on upstairs when i’m there. my 375 easily takes the top deadlift since i’m the only one who deadlifts lol. there are a handful of chest monsters though.
chalk isn’t allowed at the LA Fitness I usually deadlift at either. I just bring my own anyway. It’s never been a problem, probably because I usually do it on like Friday evenings or weekends when the gym is fairly empty.
Yea, I’ve never seen anyone at LA deadlift more than… 350ish one time maybe. But I’ve definitely seen people top my 300 bench, although it’s usually that halfway-down 90-degree-elbow bullshit. same with squat. I’ve never seen an ass to grass squat, much less using the weight I do. But I have seen half squats with insane weights.
Not to get off topic, but if the thread had been about 400lb squats, I would whole heartedly agree. That being said, I am in the military, and went to college for a bit before I joined.
So the context of all my experiences has been around young fit guys my entire adult life. I guess when you think about it that way, it’s not that rare to see 405 get pulled. Still, it’s a very small percentage.
Basically what kakno said. And the fact that most people don’t wipe their chalk off the bar when they’re done. It tends to make the gym less appealing to a lot of non-serious lifters/ potential members.
Very silly. It’s so ridiculously easy to clean too, if one were so inclined.
I’d be happy if I found a bar with free residual chalk, lol. Everything looks so much more badass with chalk on it too. I love walking home from the gym with chalk on my back. Wonder what the average person thinks of me.

Chalk, sweat, guys grunting, heavy dumbbells clashing against the floor…those things inspire and motivate.

Holy shit where did you go to high school!? I’m sure no one could pull more than 500 in my high school and it was fairly big with decent football and track teams. I’ve seen some football people bang out 4 plate squats, but nothing better than that.

I went to high school in NC and we were in the biggest conference, but our football team only had about 8 dudes over 200lb. Our weightlifting coach was a hobbyist powerlifter and serious about strength. Our final exam for the class was our actual competition squat max compared to our reported max. that way he knew if you were BS’ing during the class. We were pretty undersized, but our strength won us a lot of games we shouldn’t have won.
