Getting to a 400 lb. Deadlift

I’ve had the same comments/questions. Online 400 isn’t supposed to be much, but at my gym I rarely see people doing it. Tried out a new gym recently (Platinum GoodLife to new large 24hr GoodLife, in downtown Toronto (Adelaide/Yonge)) and noticed that there are a lot of bigger guys working out. I expect to see a lot more weight being pulled.

I’ve been deadlifting for a about 20 months now, on and off, mostly on, and started at 45 lb (back injury) and made it to 3 plates (315 lb) yesterday. When I hit about 285 my progress slowed to a crawl and I started questioning whether the 400lb figure I keep hearing was unrealistic or whether I needed to try different things. Perhaps making the time to eat and sleep properly might help.

Congrats on your progress… How do you currently go about deadlifting?

You know Frank McGrath trains at Goodlife Fitness in Brampton? My friend sees him there from time to time.

It ain’t rocket surgery

I’ve deadlifted 405lbs at 150lbs body weight belted and never thought it was something great or to brag about. I do not have said video but trust me…I’ve done it.

Nope sorry fuzzy no video and I can probably find something on the internet that states 150 pound guy can never DL 405 natural. Sorry just doesnt work that way. Try harder.

Video Or It Didn’t Happen

On topic, 405 is a pretty deal when you first hit it. Feels good man.

Yes I would agree, like a 300 pound bench or a 400 pound squat.

Yeah and that lasts a day or two before you start thinking about how unimpressive it is and how awesome it’ll be to hit 500

You guys are the best lol. But ya 405lbs isn’t that big of a deal seconds after you did it.

I don’t know about “seconds”… I was hugely jacked up for the rest of my workout after I first did it.

But within a day or two I didn’t feel so impressed with it.

Will 500 be like that? I havent hit that milestone yet.

Nor have I… it’s my goal for this year, but I bet it’ll be the same.

Agreed on the feeling. It was cool to hit 4 plates, but I was 30 pounds past that within a few weeks. Kinda made me feel like a sucker for thinking 405 was cool in the first place.

I don’t necessarily understand why OP would think deadlift numbers are inflated on here. you either lift the weight or you don’t, since there’s no eccentric portion. Bench and squat can be ‘shortened’ to lift heavier weights, but that doesn’t really exist on DL. And, as many people on here have said, it’s not that hard to lift big weights on DL. I rarely see a heavy deadlift at the commercial gym I go to, but my other gym, I would bet that 80 percent of the male lifters can pull this much.

Not going to hit it this year, my other goal is to do it weighing 205. So trying to get that weight down first. But yea probably like ever goal in my life outside of lifting, once you hit it its on to the next one.

I can’t wait to pull 585. I just think it’ll be something of beauty. A real work of art.

NO I am not falling for that again, I was stuck with that gay ass Tom Brady for a fucking month.

435 is my PR and I was weighing 250.
