Getting Started....

First of i’d like to say hey to everyone here im new around here.
Im 18years old about 166cm tall and very skinny plus i think i’m underweight currently at 52kg.

I also have a rare medical condition for my age, pancreatitis. This doesnt really pose as a disability to me doing physical activity as ive been told by the doctor but it does mean i havent been digesting food well over the past couple of weeks. I have been prescribed with enzyme pills to take with food to help me digest, so my weight is stabilising.

Turning 18 just a week ago and watchin my friends tower over me has really sparked motivation for me to do something about my appearane through bodybuilding.

Since this is my last year at school my parents dont want me joining a gym just yet, so i guess ill have to make do with what i have at home. The only thing i have at home are dumbells, the kind on which you can add weights. The only type of weights ive been doing have been for my arms, biceps and triceps. On my biceps i do 7reps of 6kg twice a week. YES I KNOW!!! YOUR GRANDMA CAN LIFT MORE!.. STOP LAUGHING!..

So I would really like some one to help me with coming up with a routine to do at home where i can have a whole body workout through the use of dumbells…
Also my main aim if to build muscle mass and “beef up”…
ALSO I FORGOT TO MENTION, IM VEGETARIAN… IF THAT DOESNT MAKE IT ANY HARDER FOR ME… :frowning:

I would really appreciate help from you guys thanks in advance…

Check out Thib’s MacGyver workout.

Some of the exercises here are a little too advanced for you, though. Still, it should inspire you to be creative.

For example, if I were in your position, I’d do the following full-body routine:

Push-up w/ Renegade Rows 10x10 (chest, back, arms, shoulders and core for stability)
Situps while holding dumbells on your chest 10x10 (abs, shoulders for stability and arms for stability)
Tabata Thrusters (shoulders and legs plus cardio; look it up)

What I like about this simple routine is that you get to work a lot of body parts with just 3 exercises. This is just an example, and you can be creative too.

I can’t help you with diet, though. I don’t know what a pancreatitic person must eat. Once you get better, add more milk and meat into your diet.

Undeadlift, I haven’t seen that article before, thanks for posting it.

To the OP, there are many different kinds of vegetarian. Do you not eat red meat? All meat? Only seafood? Dairy? We need to know more.

Although, there really is no substitution for real meat. Why are you a vegetarian? Religion? Save the animals? Health reasons? You just like it? GF likes sensitive men?

Read it.

Wow some great excercises, but yeh they do seem to be difficult with my level of strength atm…

Im vegatarian because of my religion and my parents are very strict on this rule. The things that im restricted from eating are all meats and egg, im not restricted from dairy products like cheese milk etc.

Yeh i read the article i also dont think theres anything wrong with eating meat but the thing is i dont want to be dissapointing my parents if you get what i mean… although my veiws really are different from theirs…
So would soy bean and other protein be as effective?

On the pancreatitis issue im not restriced to eating anything, as long as i take my food enzyme pills for digestion, i was hoping to meet someone else with this condition who is into bodybuilding.

Im really after some compound movements with dumbells that will workout my whole body? as i really need to become more solid, i seem to have no muscle mass in my body and just skinny with flabby skin…compound weight training is the best for beggineers right?..
Some routine that will be easy for me to do as i am not greatly strong…

Thanks for your help guys!

Soy is a no-no. The T-Nation authority agrees on that point.

I guess milk is your only option now. Drink lots of it, but make sure you exercise right so all those milk calories become muscle and not fat. Get used to farting as well.

I already mentioned 3 compound movements that pretty much work your whole body if you use them all. You can give them a try (10 sets of 10 reps will toughen you up), unless you’re too weak to do 10 straight pushups or 10 straight bodyweight squats (I used to be that weak).

Here’s the link to the Tabata Thrusters.

Oh, I just found this in Thib’s thread. I’m gonna quote him, and I hope it helps you in your diet.
The problem is that most vegetarian protein sources are incomplete (do not provide the whole spectrum of amino acids) and to be in a muscle-building state you need the full spectrum. A vegetarian will always have a harder time adding mass than an omnivore for that simple fact.

Your best bet is to have as many different source of protein as possible, to make sure that you have the full spectrum of amino acids. Legumes, nuts and seeds are particularily good choices.

Can you have whey protein powder? If you can that would be a real life saver.
Unit, with lighter weights and limited equipment, you’ll need to get a little creative with your workouts. When I started out I had some of your same limitations (minus the food and health restrictions).

I started off with just a couple of 20# dumbbells, and I had to kind of make up my own routine. You might try this series of movements: Pick a weight that you can get over your head(but not too easily), and do this-

Curl or Clean to your shoulders
Front Squat
Press or Push Press to overhead
Overhead Squat
lower weights and repeat.

Get yourself 10 to 20 reps of that series and you’ll have a decent starting point. This was nice and flexible for me in the beginning so that if I felt like I wasn’t getting enough work for my arms or legs or whatever, I could just double or triple up on the curls or the front squats to even out.

You’ll want to add rows and pullups for your back, and of course you’ll want to increase the weight your working with whenever possible.
Best luck!
