That intro man, that. fucking. intro.
This is what The Happening should have been. If The Happening had been this with these kinds of monsters and this brilliant cinematic coverage/story-telling and dialogue, it might have been one of my favourite apocalypse films.

Must not watch… T-14 minutes…
I’m only half an hour in, and this thing is fucking good. The dialogue is incredibly good and the cinematic shots are amazing, even outside of cutscenes.

So I saw Man of Steel yesterday…
SPOILERS
I did not like it.
The story about Clark growing up and all that is fine…but holy fucking living shit the fighting with Zod and the other Kryptonians was mind-numbingly long and loud.
Maybe I’m getting old…but the long fight (including the scene in Smallville) was as bad if not worse than the long insane fighting in the last two Transformer movies.
I mean if you ever wanted to see Superman punch Zod through 5 buildings you’ll get to see that…about 30 times.
And the bass got annoying afterthe first ten times that Zod’s ship went by.
Fuck I ended up sort of hating the movie after and wanting to tell the screen to fuck off.
The fact that this movie has Chris Cornell’s “Seasons” in it automatically makes it the best Superman movie of all-time. Shame on you.

So i take it you’re not a backer of George Lucas and Spielberg’s ridiculously ignorant view that videogames cant make people care about their characters and experience strong emotional reactions?

Omg I’ve had WAY stronger emotional attachment to video game characters than I ever had with movie characters. I mean barring excessive sequels you’re with a movie character for like a couple of hours. You could be with a video game character for fucking literally days worth of time, or at least a good 9 or 10 hours if you’re just going through a basic main story.

Can anyone who played the entire Mass Effect series honestly tell me you werent completely distraught and sympathetic for Commander Shepherd at the decision he had to make at the end of 3? Or that wasnt crushed at his death? (unless you got the perfect ending)
I think you can make an argument that characters like Commander Shepherd, Nathan Drake and John Marston can easily resonate with gamers just as much, if not more, than any movie character.
When’s the last time a movie ending had the same impact as the ending to Red Dead Redemption? To spend all that time getting to know this person, their past, their struggles and demons, helping them overcome incredible odds in the face of despair, only to see it all come to a tragic and abrupt end. Thats powerful media.
BF3 single player campaign got me when two of your squad mates died on the bridge trying to find cover from an enemy jet making passes at you. I don’t know if I had the music turned off (as I do with most games) or that it wasn’t playing at all but it really sunk in that your best friends who had your back just died. Games like that want me to keep playing and playing. That emotion that goes in the game is surreal.
I am looking forward to The Last Of Us for that exact reason. The emotional pull and situations that you will be put in as a person to deal with and experience that will immerse you even more into the game in that you forget that you are sitting in a chair just playing a video game. I think that is the fault with most games now a days is they are so focused on the graphics, game play, etc (all very important yes) that the story line does not get as much attention as it should. This is why Metal Gear series get perfect reviews, they have it all.
I loved the hell of of Hitman Absolution but always found Agent 47 just a cold machine with no real emotion. He just did not give two fucks about anyone really (understanding that is the character he is in the game(s)). Now if we had a character that was like that but changed throughout the games would have been interesting to see in some way or another.
EDIT:
Another note I have been playing Farcry 3 as of late and I do not know what it is but I am not as attached to your friends being kidnapped and trying to get them back. I think the issue is I had no attachment to begin with. Going into the game I had no idea who they were and what they even really looked like for that fact. I was saving people to progress through the game not because I wanted to save my friends. So the story line there really did not grasp me.

The Mass Effect series is probably the biggest example of this for sure. Bioshock Infinite was extremely compelling despite not even being that long. Same for Dishonored.
When I was a little kid and The Legend of Zelda OOT had just come out on the N64, I played that game for absolute ever and when I finally beat it I remember just staring blankly at the screen for like 20 minutes after the credits stopped thinking “I’ll never be able to experience that for the first time again”. That’s always how great books/games end imo.

I hated the end of Mass Effect 3 at first, but when i replayed it a second time and got the perfect ending, and after the extended cut DLC was released, i actually felt pretty good about it. But i still couldnt help but feel like this was the end of all the hundreds of hours i have spent with an incredible hero and leader and a supporting cast of characters that i had come to know ridiculously well.
The “Citadel” DLC was awesome. Talk about fan service in the best possible way. Full of genuinely funny, touching, and nostalgic moments.

I agree with you in Far Cry 3 that i didnt care much for any of the other characters. However, Vaas and Hoyt are portrayed so well that i genuinely wanted to fucking kill them both, and i took great pleasure in it.
I actually really liked the undercover guy who helps you towards the end, Sam i think it was? When Hoyt killed him at the poker table i was genuinely shocked and angry, even though i sensed something bad was about to happen.
That game definitely did a better job making you hate its villains than making you love its good guys.
That game is fucking awesome, i need to go replay that soon.

Fuck man you’ll enjoy the hell out of it, just the first fifteen minutes sold me. It’s so fucking good, been playing it for a while now.

Holding off for a few weeks only because im trying to wrap some other shit up first. Ive been on a big kick with going back and playing all my PSX RPG’s (chrono cross, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Tactics) and i hate to start a file in such a huge game and then get side tracked with something new. Its so damn hard to jump back into the middle of one of those games after a month or so away.
BTW, finally played my copy of FFVI for PSX a few weeks ago for the first time, (i have it on chronicles or anthology, cant remember which) and all you people who say its better than VII are either bat shit fucking crazy, or their memories are seriously clouded by nostalgia.

Had to get that off my chest.
Lol Nice, I played most of the Final Fantasys including the dreaded FF 13. Actually one of my favorites was an action styled one on the PSP called Dissidia 012: Duodecim; excited for Versus too! The Last of Us looks like it has amazing combat and definitely a great storyline and graphics. Naughty Dog is one of my favorite developers because of the Uncharted series and this is kind of like a post apocalyptic uncharted with zombies! Watched the Review on the game but won’t bother watching anything else about it until I pick it up for risk of spoilers.

Yeah, ive played every FF except 2, 4 5 and the MMO’s. I own 2,4,5 for psx but its more for the sake of having the collection. 13 blew.
IMO Uncharted 2 and 3 are the best PS3 exclusives, and im sure The Last of Us is going to join that club. Just want to make sure when i get it i can dedicate my full attention to it. Ill have to avoid all of you guys posting about it until then.
So I’m enjoying the shit out of The Last Of Us, it’s very “Children Of Men” with a little 28 Days Later and The Road mixed in. It’s pretty much the best way I could describe this with terms I know well. I heard some pre-release demo commentary suggesting stealth wasn’t a big factor, total lie. There’s a very impressive level of stealth early game and without even a hint of hostile contact with the infected. I’m having a hell of a lot of fun with this, I implore anyone that can, to buy it.
If anybody really likes Children Of Men and 28 Days Later, you’ll know what kind of story you’ll be getting out of this.
