It is caked up thermal compound. Over time, due to all the heat that has been transferred through it as a medium, the stuff will harden and lose its efficiency.

Ideally, you should scrape it off with the edge of a credit card (or any other card) to get the surface nice and clean. Steel wool would be good.

Then, buy something online called Arctic Silver (should be 5 or 7 now after the name, look for a big name hobbyist computer parts dealer) and apply a DAB/SMIDGE whatever arbitrary equivalent Metric System of it to the center of the heatsink (that thing you pictured). Try to spread it as evenly as possible (too much of it is BAD, does not allow heat to transfer efficiently, thus resulting in overheating) in a layer as thin as possible on the heatsink (yes, that copper circle that you cleaned earlier).

Here is a pic of the fan I’m talking about. The copper wachamacallit looks like it’s got a layer of crud on it.

And RSGZ, my son still hasn’t got back to me on the graphics card upgrade I was thinking about so I still might need some advice. In the meantime I’ll get the specs on the PC I have now to give you a better idea of what we’re working with.

wait a minute. that’s not crud, i’m pretty sure it’s thermal compound. that’s the stuff that helps the heat transfer from what needs to be cooled (IME, the GPU or CPU) to the heat sink, which is what’s in the picture.

it would be a good idea to reapply that stuff before you put your computer back together, as that will contribute to how well your system cools.

any tech junkies can correct me if i’m wrong, but these are the problems i ran into with my xbox, inefficient cooling.
You know, you may be right since I’m trying to figure out where the fan comes into this. I’ve had the internal copper coil of fans oxidize and fill up with crap, which is what I was referring too.

Thermal compound is meant to seal up the micro-gaps in the heatsink to provide an even surface with as much contact as possible for the most heat absorption from the processor. It makes a BIG difference.
That wooshing sound I just heard was you guy’s talking lol…right over my head. Anyway, yes the fan is on the other side of the thing in my hand. I still can’t understand how one of the wires from the fan was cut in the first place. I’m glad I resistid the urge to polish up that disc for sure now. I guess the thing to do is say to myself “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.

If I do plan to upgrade I’ll look into finding that compound. I know it’s dusty as fuck in there so I’ll have to get that sorted out as well. I feel like a neglecful owner now and I deserve what ever misery I get for ignoring it for so long lol.

Thanks for the help guy’s.

1600-2000 grit sand paper works well too… polishes up really nice.

I usually take a worn out campus / credit card and whip the stuff really thin when working with artic silver…

This will be AWESOME… if it ever makes it to market.

I’ve never been a big fan of the PSP or DS, but I don’t really have time when traveling to game. Either way, this would be a really good integration of a phone and gaming device, since I’ve always found playing games on normal smartphones to be very awkward.

PSP + GOOD phone hardware and software = fantastic idea.

This is what they have to say about it so far:

“Right now we’re working on getting even more detail about the phone and partnership, but we can tell you now that this is not a random rumor – we have reason to believe that what we’ve heard and seen is real and coming to market. It makes perfect sense in a way – Google gets a much-needed push into the gaming and entertainment space for Android, while Sony (via its partnership with Ericsson) finally delivers the PlayStation phone users have been wanting. We see it as a major win for both companies and the consumer… and we always need another distraction. Stay tuned to this space for updates as we get them, and in the meantime, start socking away the pennies.”

Also, I imagine that since Sony and Google are working together now on certain projects (Google TV, too) this will play very nicely with a PS3 too. Can only be good news for their owners.

I can’t wait, its going to be a blood bath.

Damn, you beat me to it. I’m pretty stoked for this actually. I really liked the realization of the atmosphere in the first Bioshock and this is the same studio, so it’ll be pretty awesome.

Is anyone else who uses Chrome getting an error message whenever they try to load one of the T-Nation forums?

I get that every now and then, try clearing your cookies and cache.

I’m in Chrome right now and I am not seeing any issues.

What is the error you are seeing?

It’s not giving me a message, only the type (Exception report), description (The server encountered an internal error that prevented it from fulfilling this request.), exception (wall of text), and root cause (another wall of text). Just let me know if you want either of the walls of text.

LOL, sure you can send the walls of text to me at mr@t-nation.com. Thanks!

Sorry, but the N-Gage was a piece of shit. Nokia’s OS is a piece of shit, too. Symbian is so outdated it’s not even funny, they need to hurry up with refreshing it to stay in the game.

I mean, games on the iPhone getting more popular than any device, but playing games on it sucks IMO.

My point was more like combining a modern smartphone with a PSP would be much more effective.

Agreed. I am assuming he has never actually played a psp to compare the two.

PSP is a great device alone with very easy to use software that is compatible with the PS3. Add a phone onto game play and video like that and I’ll pick one up quickly long before I buy an iPhone.

They still need a retractable keyboard though because surfing the net on one of those while entering everything with the joystick takes too much time.

I was pointing out that the last time someone tried the phone-handheld mash up, it was a complete and utter failure. Sony has the technology to do make this work, but it’s really a question of whether or not a phone handheld is what the community wants.

A phone and game console are two things that don’t have to be melded into one. My Xbox doesn’t make toast, but that doesn’t mean I need a Toastbox 360 that plays games and makes poptarts.

although i could probably fry eggs on the power supply. what were we talking about again?

oh yeah. combining two different electronics with two very different primary functions dampens the quality of the overall product. I would rather have a phone that works really well as a phone, and a handheld that plays really well as a handheld, without shoehorning all the features (but more importantly hardware) into one cramped space.

you smell what i’m steppin in?
