Damn I was a D&D nerd too. Actually Rifts, Heros Unlimited, Marvel Super Heros, DC, Robotech etc. all good games. Haven’t played in forever. Still like buying the books…amazing art and great ideas! Vorpal swords are my friend.
What the is the matter with everyone? Where is Resident evil?? Metal Gear?? Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. I don’t care what anyone here says your not a true gamer until you have stayed up all night playing RE with 5 bullets left, no first aid spray and on caution while you hear a “tick tick” around the corner. Now those were some good times.
RE was pretty good but I more realistic games. Any sports, sim style racing of any kind, and I still can’t believe no one here plays SOCOM: navy seals. Oh and Metal gear was good, but Metal Gear Solid was easy and the end got pretty stupid. Try Max Pyne
Hey Roman if you get to check out either FF XI or WoW, let me know how it is. With time constraints I don’t get a chance to test out games I think I might like, because I don’t want to waste the money or time on getting a boring game.
Stella, I don’t think that they are going to erase your characters or items… you just can’t play the updated version with your old characters. Just like you can’t transfer items or characters from regular to hardcore. You just won’t be able to play in games with the updates with old characters and items.
Another one I hadn’t thought of in a while is the Phantasy Star series. Don’t have my genesis anymore, but I’ve got to find an emulator for those. It’s a shame they died off like they did, I liked them way better at the time than FF
Have you tried Final Fantasy 7? It’s my favorite FF of all time. The graphic’s mediocre (cuz it’s an old game), but the story’s amazing, and Sephiroth rocks (the villain)
While the story in FF7 WAS amazing, it just isn’t as good as that in FF4 (released in the US as FF2) for the Super Nintendo.
The elements of the story in FF2 are just better overall, but square wrote it geared towards younger people. If they redid it slightly and targetted older games with different dialogue and kept the story the same, it would blow FF7 way.
Still, I love FF7 and I cried like a little girl when Aeris died.
I haven’t played any FF previous to FF7 since I didn’t own a console at that time.
The one FF game I really want to try is FF6, the one w/ Celes in it.
As for Aeris…that was a shocking scene. Good thing I didn’t invest much time and effort into building Aeris, otherwise I’d have been mad on top of being sad.
Stella:
FF6 was one of the more recent ones I’ve played, and it was indeed a good one. If you need the rom…
I think the coolest thing about the FF series is that as a single series of games, it is really possible to see an evolution in not just graphics like all the others, but in game play. FF6 was the real transition between the current and older stylings. It had the classic snes sprite based graphics, but many of the gameplay elements used later were first introduced there.
Right now I’m playing the old ssi/add game “pools of darkness”, with the classic cheesy block sprites… They used that same crappy engine for a lot of games.
I played FF7, and I liked it, but I was expecting a lot more, I wish I’d played it on the PS, instead of the PC, on the PC there were too many bugs that I found. I didn’t like the original final fantasy for the NES that well, although the red mage looked suspiciously like a pimp, with the red cape and red feather hat. Dragon Quest was better in my opion, I wish they’d brought more of those to the US. You should really check out the older final fantasies (especially 2, I keep my super nintendo fired up about once every few weeks with it). Although Sephiroth would destroy Kefka. No doubt about it. Did you say you’re still playing the old D&D games? I’m thinking about signing up for D&D online.
That post on FF2 made me think. I know everyone talks about the PS as one of the best CRPG consoles, but I kind of think that Squares best work was on the SNES, between FF2 and Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, they had some great games, not much graphically, but great stories. I’ve got probably 40 RPG’s in there that I picked up cheap, and I’d much rather play than some of the new ones that are graphically amazing, but gameplay weak. My favorite RPG of the last year was Divine Divinity. Didn’t look all that great, but the story and interactions are great. I’m glad Larian made enough to keep the world alive.
Mike- Ha! I never put the pieces together on the pimp thing but that’s so true with the hat and the long coat… Good stuff.
I havn’t played the Dragonquest/Warior series since I was like 10, but they were my first graphical and console RPG’s. I played 1-4 on the nes, but none of the psx/gb stuff.
