Hey
I haven’t read the books but I had a question. I came across this map,
and I see that there are other continents in the ASOIAF world.
Do the books go into these places? More specifically, Jade Sea, Yiti, Sothoryos, and other places in the east.

^^Hey Puff! Lookin great in the new Avi.
The first book is good, the third is great and so far the 5th is too. 2 & 4 were/are ok IMO. Havent read any Tolkien except Hobbit so I cant really compare.
The fifth book is “great” so far?
I have yet to read it, but everything I have read has been pretty much “mediocre at best”.
Stylistically, a mediocre GRRM is better than most writers out there, in my opinion… but most of the concerns I’ve read have to do with little plot advancement and too many side characters.
I thought the 5th book was quite good.

About the only places other than westeros the book visits to my knowledge is essos and bravoos.
It felt like this entire episode was a complete fabrication. Almost nothing that happened went down the same as it did in the books.
SHOW SPOILER
I LOLed when Ygritte gave Jon “the wiggle”. The fucking wiggle gets me every time.

I agree 100% with your post.
I brought this up to my wife when the show ended last night. I feel like the writers completely took liberty with the story and plot line last night … However, most of it was pretty good and didn’t detract from the books.
SPOILER
with this exception. They haven’t introduced the Cranogman kids yet (i forget their names at the moment). They are a huge part of Bran’s story line…

It looks like they are setting it up for Meera and Jojen Reed to be written out of the show entirely. I don’t see how they can possibly meet up with the boys now that they’ve already escaped Winterfell. But that HAS to happen for Bran and Rickon to split up, and that HAS to happen for obvious reasons. I think we might have seen the last of the boys for this season.
Dany is much more whiny and ridiculous than she appeared in the books, much like Viserys was. I hope she gets her shit together after she visits the House of the Undying.
I wonder who is going to play Ramsay Bolton. The mere mention of his name pisses me off. I hope the actor does him justice, since he is by far the worst villain in the series. Apparently he isn’t going to be introduced until season 3 though, which means that this season will probably end with the apparent executions of Bran and Rickon.
The scene with Littlefinger, Tywin, and Arya was pretty intense, even though you knew what was going to happen if you’d read the books. I could barely pay any attention to the dialogue.
Show Spoiler.
The scene of the mob ripping the Great Septon apart with their barehands was epic. When the riot scene began I though “well, this doesn’t look anything like I imagined!” then they pulled the guy’s arm off I went “HOLY SHIT!”
I’m a little dissapointed how they’re playing Sandor though. In the books when Sansa describes how he rescued her she said he laughed and went berserl like a maniac when he was cutting everyone to shreds. The way he delt with the guys trying to rape Sansa on the show was kinda “Well, I’ll kill these guys now… pull your guts out… now I’ll slit your throat… okay, now where done.”
I hate how they are changing shit that does not need to be changed.
They did so well in season 1 not sure why change crap now.
Tywin is a vagina and not the heartless bastard you see in the books
Dany is a cunt and wtf is up with her dragons being stolen now?
Theon deserves what he gets
Brianne of tarth is a monster fits it perfectly,
Gregor is going to be a d-bag since its that tall skinny white walker from season 1 instead of man beast conan.
SPOILERS UP TO STORM OF SWORDS

I think Tywin is being done well. He likes Arya because she’s a bold, brave, intelligent little thing. I think the book version of Tywin would have liked her as well. I believe Roose Bolton took a shine to her in the books. He is very similar to Tywin Lannister so it’s a reasonable parallel.
Agree that Dany is much more ridiculous than she was in the books, as I mentioned in my post above. I am not happy with how she’s been portrayed the last few episodes.
I don’t think the new Gregor (agree that he sucks) is going to get any screen time the rest of the season. I’m speculating that they’re keeping him ambiguous so Conan Stevens can come back for the fight with Oberyn, which is the only really important thing The Mountain does (while actually present with the POV character) in the series thus far.
I’ll just second what’s already been said. Not too pumped on the deviations TBH. How can they write out the Reeds?
MINI SPOILER KINDA
I wonder if John Snow is gonna meet back up with Halfhand and continue on like the book or if he and Ygrette (sp?) will just run into him together?
Something about Ygrette was hot. Hopefully JS plows her soon lol.
END MINI SPOILER

Still in book one, but these are pretty violent. I don’t think I could watch the HBO series if they get even more graphic. Although, I would like to see Bran get even with Jaime Lannister. And I think I need a direwolf.
If you like these, you might try Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Great book, with lots of brutal middle ages action. I know there’s a TV series of that one too, but I haven’t seen it.
I’m not going to lie, Pillars of the Earth sucked so hard. So useless. I mean, interesting stories but some far fetched love scenes, too much angsty priest action who never has a weakness of faith, just a terribly predictable read for me. Specifically, the line about the main chick leaving in the flaccid penis and gushing bout how she loved it was rediculous. As was the pissing on the priest scene. So you know I read it.
I feel like everyone misses the point of GRRM’s scenes. The point is to pay attention cause every word is important. Knowing where people are from is important, knowing how people feel about other cultures is important. It makes the book so much more than the narrative and completely about the individual. I mean, before GRRM who actually spent time thinking about what a princess does when she is no longer a princess.
I’ve noticed women seem to like Pillars of the Earth way more than GoT.
Pillars of the Earth was awful, and just got ridiculous - peasants didn’t just get slaughtered like that! they had legal representation and the stupid lords are just destroying their source of income.
I liked Pillars of the Earth.
I thought it was a great epic story about how the lives of a few can affect a region for generations.
and the depiction of the little brother turned knight, and the impact that his presence had on the community was interesting. the relationship of the priest to the church and the way that he received funding for the new cathedral was a great story
but then again, it was probably more of a historical fiction, and less of a Fantasy - I tend to like stories that are held in an actual country that is during a particular time period more intriguing.
however, this thread is about thrones, and since I have not read the books, I am enjoying the show immensely~
@“Pillars of the Earth”
Once I start a book, I’m pretty much committed.
Maybe 2% get thrown into a corner before finishing it.
In this case, the amount of idiocies was just too big - my highlight was the one-day-erection of a functional citywall + fosse and the follwing battle. One can only speculate about the amount of meth that has to be smoked…
verdict: 6,5/10 (estrogen points)
Is it just me or does the title make the series sound like a toilet version of musical chairs?

Weeeell, like the wooden fort on a hill thing, with a moat and palisades, or the real deal?
