This might just be the best show on TV. Last night’s premiere was pretty intense. Season 2 was a little slow, but it has since picked up speed. I’ve read some of the forums on the SciFi sight and there are some great theories about who is a cylon.
By the way, what the hell is with Apollo’s fat ass? I died laughing when they showed his gut.

Boy, it must have been difficult for the actor who plays Apollo to gain all that weight for a few episodes this season. It will be interesting to see if, as I suspect he will become more battle-hardened, he goes through a physique transformation back to his usual self. Boy had a physique on him, no doubt.
Suicide bombers; occupation; insurgents; “state” sponsored police. Talk about using science fiction to provide some sort of commentary on current events: hell, this is when science fiction is at its best.
Yup, the premier was great. Better than I expected. They’ve kicked it up a notch. Should be a great season, so many headgames now. Is Starbuck a cylon? I bet she’s questioning that herself now. I was wondering how she would handle the kid, considering the opening scene, I was kinda hoping that she’d just walk over and dispose of the kid. I suppose that woulda been too much but it would be fitting. If the writing stays at this level it should be another great season.
Best written show on TV. The peak of what SF can be when done right. How a crappy, campy late 70s TV show became a complex discourse about the nature of humanity, God, personhood, military ethics, etc. – complete with flawed 3 dimensionsal, deeply human characters (not all of which are human) , I have no idea. But I’m not complaining.

That wouldn’t make sense to me - if she were a cylon, they wouldn’t need to work this hard to get her to cooperate - they could just have one of her duplicates walk in the door. Also, if she’s one of them, why do they need to get this individual Starbuck to cooperate?

I do think the kid might be a cylon, though.
I too love the fat Lee Adama - just one of the great little details that goes into the writing. I’d read it was a fat suit, but since we saw him in a towel is that possible?
I have never watched more than maybe most of one episode. They lost me on the clone issue.
I know that fans of it will say the DVD is worth getting, but what makes this stand out? What do guys who like this show like about OTHER shows on DVD?
Maybe I’m reading too much into the Cylon occupation thing, but it looks to me to be a thinly veiled take on the Iraqi situation. Creating a local police force to deal with the resistance (and the problems that are caused by it), the moral dilemma of suicide bombings, etc. Just a thought really, but seems plausible.
I wouldn’t be suprised if future episodes showed the resistance infiltrating the New Caprica Police like the various sides in Iraq have done with the Iraqi police (or atleast the media has led me to believe so, but I’m not sure if there is such a thing as an unbiased news source anymore…).

The first two seasons had a Cold War feel to it.
They explained the outdated technology with the Cylons ability to hack into advanced computer systems and the idea that there are Cylons now that are next to impossible to distinguish from human beings allows for a very McCarthy-ish atmosphere…
Now they pick the season up with human insurgents, suicide bombers, collaborators, with very realistic characters…
Science Fiction at its best, no finger pointing, no easy answers, only a realistic what-if scenario…
Watch this as a double feature with the latest Jericho episode for a depressing doomsday scenario evening…

The thing I found interesting was the inversion - the people we identify w/, the humans, are the ones using suicide bombs and suffering the effects of an occupation.

You can get the DVDs through netflix, so you wouldn’t have to buy the whole set of dvds to see if you like it. You can also download episodes of the first and second season for $1.99 per on itunes.

I absolutely agree. Its hard to ignore the parallels w/ the Iraq war. If this show was seen by more people or was on a major network, there would probably be a lot of complaints that it was using the Iraq war as a vehicle for entertainment(not that I feel this way).
My friend was offended by the suicide bombings on the show…said it glamorized the situation. Did an of that look glamorous to you guys? The insurgents were shown in a pretty ugly light. This show is actually a good reminder of how grim the Iraq situation has become.

I agree. The parallels with Iraq are obvious. The show handles it in a good way. Shows both sides with no preaching or judgement.
I saw no glamour in the suicide bombings, just horror.

I think the suicide bombing was show in a pragmatic light. Tigh said they use them to disrupt the Cylons and keep them focused on the resistance, instead of on the fleet. Though I’m not sure how well that reflects the reality of suicide bombings. But as far as being offended, well I didn’t see anything to be offended by. There was the ethical approach and the pragmatic approach, but I failed to see anything that glorified the event.

Yeah, I don’t see them having been glorified at all. The only one who is really full-bore in favor of them is Tigh, and let’s face it, he’s a disasterous leader, whose macho-er than thou approach has consistently made any situation to which he applied it worse.
Sure, we can all understand why he’s bitter, but I don’t think any viewer watches this and thinks, “yeah, suicide bombings, that’s the ticket.” You might think it really is their best approach in these circumstances, but I don’t think any reasonable viewer sees it as a good thing.
If you base your ideas of the nature of violence in Iraq on what you get from infotainment, don’t be so quick to assume that BG draws an accurate parallel.
I’ve seen plenty of it first-hand. Nearly all suicide bombers here are attacking other Iraqi civilians. A better parallel would be Capricans and Geminons bombing each other for territory and control of the government. I haven’t seen any of 3.0 yet, so I’m basing my ideas on the previous posts.
Does it seem like they are making veiled commentary on the US in Iraq, or just writing current events into the series?
I have the DVDs from BG 1.0,2.0,2.5 and it’s the only series I bothered to watch over here. I actually really like the series. I just hope they don’t try to politicize it, thus ruining a good thing.
