Gaining Muscle Without Carbs?

hi,

for health reasons, i am on a no-sugar and very low-carb diet. that means what i eat is pretty much vegis/eggs/meat/fish/Metabolic Drive/cheese/more vegis(mostly green ones). (cheating consists of eating bacon MMmmmmmmmmmm)

how does his affect gaining weight? i’m a scrawny guy that needs 20 lbs. of muscle. i know this will hold me back, but would it stop me from putting on the weight?

thanks

Hi Jake

Sure you can gain weight.

What is your current meal plan look like?

Eventhought you can not eat sugar, what is you condition since there might be other carbs that you can eat (fruit for example).

And remember the postworkout window can help you handle better the carbs (maybe some fruit)!!!

There is a diet called the anabolic diet in wich you eat in wich most of the calories come from fat and protein and little carbs.

So sure you can gain weight you need to eat more and remember to post your diet

Listen you need carbs…maybe a better option would be cycling carbs. Considering that you are scrawny (like you stated). I doubt carbs is going to hurt you.

Agreed. What are the “health reasons” behind avoiding all carbohydrates? That implies that simply eating carbohydrates is “unhealthy”.

Yes, avoiding all carbs will make it very hard to gain more body weight. It would make more sense if there were more details as to WHY someone would do this and blame it on “health”.

id like to hear the reason for total barring of cabs as well

insulin/pancreas/gi-related health reasons… doctor’s orders. its not indefinitey, just for a few months. i know some might say “find a different doctor” but i don’t really wanna go into that side of things.

given the contraints no sugar and “very low carbs” how can i best maximize muscle gain? have my few daily carbs pre/post workout?

For someone with any true metabolic disorders related to their pancreas and GI tract, why would you assume gaining anything is a good idea?

What specific problems are you having?

It seems strange to only think of your body in terms of how carbohydrates affect it while instigating a plan to cause a large change in how your body operates (homeostasis). If you trust your doctor about the cause of your problem, why avoid bringing this up to him?

“Health reasons” doesn’t explain anything…AT ALL.

ok… i guess given my past threads i shouldnt be embarassed to say. but i work in a job where i have to be around people all the time, and all carbs give me gas- whether its bread, fruit, or sugar (especially candy). i cant eat carbs during the week or else i couldnt work. still despite this, i’d like to gain weight.

(ps, trying this for a while while taking tons of probiotics. thinking that if i dont feed the carb-hungry bacteria for a while then i can alter my flora balance)

Yes, you can build muscle on a low-carb diet. You do this by replacing carbs in the diet with healthy fats. There are plenty of diet books and nutritional advice on the web about this.

dex, read up on digestive enzymes. Go to a health food store and tell them you want a “broad spectrum, plant based digestive enzyme.”

Broad spectrum means that it has a wide variety of enzymes that will help your body digest protein, fat and carbs. Plant based means that it will start working in the stomach, rather than waiting to kick into gear in the small intestines. Try a different brand every time you finish a bottle until you find one that you feel is doing the job you need done.

After you’ve got that squared away, read up on kefir. It’s like a watery yogurt. Don’t buy the stuff they sell in the store. Get the grains from someone and ferment your own. It only takes 24 hours. It’s a lot more biologically active (and more effective!), and you’ll save a ton of money.

I like to mix my kefir in the blender with mango or blueberries or raspberries. It’s actually quite a tasty drink!

I’m suprised no one has menioned the anabolic diet. It could easily be adjusted to meet your ahem specific concerns. PM me.

hey,

u suggested the anabolic diet for my problem? i read about it-- how did you change it?

thanks

lolololol You went from a doctor with pancreas/GI/insulin problems…to don’t want people to smell your farts? lol and your scared to say this on the internet? Sounds like you have other issues to deal with then muscle.

I wouldn’t change it, just do it. No carbs during the week, and on the weekend you can enjoy your carbs. No farting at work, and you can still grow.
