Gain Weight for Judo

For all fellow Judogi and MMA members out there, I’m going to have to gain some weight over the next few months. Being new to Judo, I would imagine that since flexibility is an issue, I wouldn’t want to focus on so much isolation, more on compound lifts. I’ve devloped a A-B split (Staley). If I simply eat more, reduce cardio, and lift more frequently, will this have a detrimental effect on my Judo technique? Or should I make sure I stretch just as much?

If you still focus on your technique in your regular training, it should benefit from the added strength.

If you’re new, I’d be guessing you aren’t competeing yet, either, so you don’t have to stay in a weightclass, meaning you can be a bit less strict with your diet. Reducing cardio will definitely help as well.

Why do you have to gain weight soon ?

I ordered a size 5 gi, and I’m 160 lb.s. It’s rather large on me and I have plenty of room to grow in it. I tried to shrink it, but I’m just going to have to gain weight. Not to mention the people I spar with all weigh ~185-210.

Man, try to sell that gi or shrink it a lot, I’m 220lbs and wear 4 to 4.5 gi (adidas). Gotta be tight in it!

alrite! well, since I’m still on topic, think it would be better for me to hover around 160 just so when I compete in the future I can just lose a few lb.s and toss some lightweights around?

Ronnie Coleman can do splits. Flexibility only becomes an issue when you don’t work on it.

compete whenever you can, don’t wait until you think you’re ready for it. every time you compete you learn.
Ju(st) Do It !

In judo…
worry first about your technique, then worry about physical capacities. As for physical capacities, worry first about explosivity and power, and then endurance. General strength should come naturally with practice, as well as balance and flexibility.

Your body has a weight range at which it naturally operates best, and this is where you should compete, no more no less. Granted you want to be as lean and muscular as possible for whatever weight range it is your body feels best at, but you do not want to push yourself far beyond that level of muscularity because it will adversely effect your performance.

Some people are naturally stockier or have bigger frames, and they will carry their weight better then you.
Judo, well done, is all about positioning and timing anyways.
