Functional Workouts

Hello, I’m having trouble deciding on a functional strength routine. If anyone could be so kind as to list all of the best functional strength lifts I would be very pleased. I’m not too sure what makes certain exersizes build “functional” strength, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

It depends on your experience level. Start with the money exercises - the basic compound lifts. If more advanced, clean, jerk, snatch, and OLs would be good. At any level, you can do GPP stuff like farmer’s walk, tire flipping, sled dragging, etc. Imagine building a house. By yourself. What would help you do that?

I’ve been lifting for two years, but I’m not too familiare with the “GPP” and other stuff like that. I haven’t done any Olyimpic lifts besides clean and press. If you could give me the full name of the lift, I could do a search on them and the execution of the lift. Thanks.

first we would need to know what function you want to apply the strength too… seriously

are you talking strong man type shit? Just all around usefullness?

The “magnificent 7” are a good place to start.

I atually JUST read that, and bookmarked it, thanks.

I just want to be more profficient at everything. Right now I’m 6’2, 205lbs, 23 years old. My lifts are pretty good I guess, compared to others at the gym, although I do hate to compare myself to others. Thanks for the help.

Seeing as most are starting to really tune into what Dan John has to say, he has a really great article on his website about overhead squats.

The point of the article is that if one could do overhead squats with bodyweight for reps, he/she would be an animal.

I’ve tried this exercise a few times and must say that it really forces you to think about what every part of your body is doing.

Great stuff.

you want functional exercises? you really need to pop over to the superslow guild. They ooze function, and their ground breaking training methods build strength and muscle on average 1000000 times quicker than anything else. FACT.
