Functional Hypertrophy With 8 Reps?

I know I have read that 4-6 reps is good for functional hypertrophy. But I had someone time me on my 8 rep max, I might have been able to get 9 reps, and I was able to get it done in 21 seconds. Would 21 seconds at 8 reps still be to long to consider the set not as effective of a functional hypertrophy set? Thanks for any help.

I dont know how much i can help but on my personal experience i gained alot of size on a 8 rep 3 set basis. I think thats plenty of time. Bodies are different though i suggest find what works for you.

You’re overthinking this. And counting the time it takes to finish a set is pointless.

Wrong.

Read up on EDT. The whole premise to do more work per set (measured in time).

I am probably overthinking it, but on Christian Thibaudeau SuperSets it showed that between 10-20 seconds with light weight that the Maximal Strength is very high and Hypertrophy was still moderate.

So with heavy weight shouldn’t it still be the same as long as I am real close to the total amount of seconds to complete the set?

Isn’t the idea of EDT to do more reps in a certain amount of time total, rather than a single set?

15 minutes = one set in EDT

(8 reps / 21 seconds) > (8 reps / 35 seconds), ceteris paribus.

Here’s a potentially better question:

Why use 8’s when you could do 2’s or 3’s?

Well, have another look at this idea:

If you and your twon brother both lift 200 pounds for a 1RM, you both have equivalent maximum strength. BUT, if you can lift it faster, you have greater power.

Further, if you can, over time, lift a given weight for 8 reps faster than you could before, it means you’ve improved your power-endurance…at least for the lift you’re using.

SO: If power-endurance factors into your objectives, timing your sets might be a rational thing to do…

Yes!! I believe he doesn’t understand EDT

Do 5x5 its king for strength and size at the same time
