WRITE UP
We got to the facility in Carrollton, TX at around 0730 on Thursday to weigh in. I knew I was over 198, but I didn’t plan on cutting nor was I going to attempt to. I will, however, shoot to lift at 198 in my next meet after some more attention will be paid to my diet and conditioning starting in my next training cycle after this week of taking it easy. My teammates/buddies, were over by 0.6 and 2.5 lbs respectively. The guy who was over by 2.5 also had two giant breakfast burritos on the way down there. They both made weight within the hour and then we went to go eat a few meals and take it easy for the evening.
Meet day started pretty damn early. I had some family stuff pop up at 3 AM that cost me about an hour of sleep, but it was worth the missed sleep and the mini crisis was averted. Got up around 0600, checked out of the hotel, went to IHOP, had a Bacon temptation omlette (bacon makes the T high!), some pancakes, milk, and coffee. Meeting was 0800 and lifting started at 0900.
There were three flights of squats. The geared lifters and super huge raw guys first, mostly raw and a few geared guys, then the women/kids/NOOBS flight. This was pretty much the basic construct for the whole day.
I was in the second flight of squats, so we got warmed up as the bigger guys were going. I didn’t really get to see anything super impressive since I was warming up and doing BJ’s.
Warmed up to a few singles at 385. Everything felt fast and fresh. By the time our flight started, I still had my knee sleeves on and shoes tied. I assumed I would have sufficient time to get them off and get ready to use my wraps. I was wrong. By the time I got over and had my gear ready, I was in the hole. I decided to just hit the 445 opener with sleeves and I smoked it. They were moving so fast through the squats, I was having anxiety. I was also wrapping one of my teammates about 5 lifters before me. This was not ideal and we definitely need to get a couple more people to help. Next time.
485 was next. I had my sleeves off and was ready to use my wraps. I got under the bar, unracked it and started my squat. As I was descending, I lost my groove and started tipping backwards. My instincts took over and I took a few steps to avoid dumping and stood up with the weight on my back. Obviously, I didn’t get the lift, but I knew I could go up on my next attempt. I decided 505 was a safer bet due to only having 445 on the board so far. I got ready, wrapped, walked it out (easily), and smashed it. I definitely had my goal of 525 in me. I can’t say I’m super dissapointed, but I definitely shouldn’t have sold myself short. I wasn’t going to do that again. I did get the top raw squat in the meet. I need to do bigger meets!!
Warmed up to a single at 225. Bench opener was 245. Easy. I got one red light because I racked it too fast. Not a big deal. 270 was my next attempt and I smoked it and waited on the rack command. During the lifter’s meeting. We were told the pauses would be fairly quick. All we had to was show the bar stopped moving, and they’d give us the command. This was NOT the case. This guy was calling SUPER long pauses for our flight, but the bigger geared guys were getting awesome calls. So were some of the girls. I hate that shit. I smoked it, but got a super weird cramp in my back. It didn’t affect me at all, just kinda unpleasant. Decided 295 was a good third attempt. Took it out, took it to the chest, got the long ass pause command, and couldn’t really get it past a few inches off my chest. Not sure what happened, but I think the combination of pause anxiety and starting to get tired got to me.
Deadlift started great. Warmed up to a single at 385. 425 and 475 flew off the ground. My meet goal was 505. I did feel tired and could have probably gone 490 or 495, but decided to go for it and just see what happens. I think I got it a couple inches off the ground. Not my best effort, by far. My conditioning sucks and I KNOW that’s why I missed this lift. No excuses.
Totaled 1250. Missed by best-case scenario goal by 80 lbs and probably left close to 50 lbs out there between the misses and over reaching. I don’t live a cowards life and honestly, if I was to settle, I don’t think I’d be happy with myself.
I ended up winning the Men’s Open 220lb class. I can’t say I’m overly excited about it. I was the only 220 to finish the meet and I really wanted to have more competition. Winning is all fine and dandy, but I want to do it the right way. Not by default. I do, however, enjoy my ninja sword. Now I have ample protection from zombies and samauris.
Throughout the meet I ingested the following: 2 sugar free red bulls, 2 Surge Recovery shakes with Leucine and Creatine added, several of those pre-made PB&J’s, some fruit, water, and Gatorade (Grape G2). I felt SUPER bloated by the time DL came around. My belt didn’t want to go on. LOL!!! Next time, I’m cutting the carbonated drinks in favor of something similiar that won’t bloat me so much.
After the meet, we went to a cajun place, had some grub, a beer and I headed over to my mom’s about 45 minutes away.
Met up with a lot of the old HS crew and commenced to drinking WAYYYY more than I should have but I had a good time and saw a lot of old faces. It was a good way to end the day.
This weekend I’m headed down to New Orleans (FINALLY; trip got delayed last weekend) and then back at it the next week. That’s it for now. I’m exhausted and still hung over. Lots of sleep this week…
TEXICAN, OUT!
