I’ll have to echo on this. I used to eat whatever I want and only trained hard because all I cared about was getting stronger. Recently I’ve decided to take a new direction by leaning down and I did so via counting macros. It’s been about 4 months and I’ve gone from around 200 to 180. Not sure about bf% but my estimate would be around 11-12% right now. Many people say you can’t gain strength while losing weight but I have made small PR’s and can confidently say that I am stronger now than when I was 200+. All from having my nutrition dialed in. I also feel better about myself and definitely have more energy now despite starting work in a high stress environment earlier this year.

Physique wise, people told me I got bigger. They couldn’t believe that I actually weigh 20lb less. My goal is to get down to the single bf% (for fun really, just because I’ve never been shredded and summer is coming up and all).
That’s awesome man.

I hope you get to your lean goal!

First, I have never just “eaten whatever I want”. I knew what my goal was and me looking the way I did wasn’t about ignoring how I eat or paying no attention to how I eat.

People who do that don’t get that muscular.

No one gets really huge without being obese by simply not caring at all what they eat.

Some of us simply understood that some fat gain was likely so we just accepted that and worked on reaching our goals.

If you guys see someone with arms over 18"-20" and a waist under 40", chances are, they didn’t get that way by NOT caring what they eat at all.

To even think that is not only insulting, it just isn’t reality.

Some of us may be more loose with our diets at times, but that is also because the larger goal is what matters…not walking around trying to impress everyone with what my body fat level is at all times.

I could see if the guys here were small or unmuscular…but when they happen to be some of the bigger more muscular people here, I just don’t get it.

So in both of your cases, your goal wasn’t necessarily or specifically “to get bigger”. That is actually some people’s goals. To physically ‘get bigger’. Don’t read too much into it by injecting numbers like “14.5634545% bodyfat”.

Literally, can you imagine that there might actually be some dude out there, who doesn’t log into weightlifing forums, who just goes to the gym and wants to ‘get bigger’? It’s a real big world out there with people who do exactly that kind of craaaaaazy shit. It’s true.

I don’t know that anyone here has advocated gaining too much weight for the sake of gaining too much weight.
Steely, the man in your avatar has gained too much beard for the sake of gaining too much beard.
But if he kept trimming his beard, he would never have achieved “Full Beardness”. That’s all functional beard. Plus, he is a sharply dressed man.
But could he win a title at the World Beard and Moustache Championships? I’m not sure he would be as impressive as a guy that has less size but better beard aesthetics.

But I suppose it fits his goals and lifestyle.
HAAA!

25 million albums sold and some of the coolest riffs on the planet.

Q: “Who has the coolest beard ever?”

A: I’ll bet dollars to donuts the top answers are “Santa Claus” and “ZZ Top dudes” (MAYBE Rasputin). None are very asthetic or even creative.

Without Googling, who’s the current World Beard and Moustache Champion? Mmm hmmm.

Billy Gibbons-- 25 million records sold. Poster boy for beardness. Some of the coolest guitar riffs on the planet. Goals achieved.
Depends on what category are you talking about, Steely.

(After reading the above link, I bet da beard joins a local competitive bearding club.)

Exactly. Without having that specific goal in mind, how do you go from really skinny to huge?

We aren’t talking about people with goals of looking like someone from a underwear package ad.

My goal was really big muscles. Most people don’t do that by not spending some real time just working on all out size.

O-M-G, how the hell did I never hear of this before? Bearding clubs, lmao. Unfortunately I only have time for one recreational activity right now, I’ll stick with the iron.

Before I cause any misunderstanding, my post wasn’t directed at you nor anyone with that thought. I just wanted to point out a good point detazathoth made. Getting stronger has always been a priority for me. The reason I got fat to begin with was because I was told that’s the quickest way to strength gain (my GOMAD days lol).

I eat “clean” but to fit in more calories I resort to fast food when needed. I started lifting during my track and field days in high school. I started lifting to improve performance in track and field and never for impressing people with physique, so I guess that’s why maybe I’m more oriented towards strength gains.

With that said, getting bigger is also important to me but I’m not in a hurry which I guess separates me from most people. I’d rather let strength go up and size to come with it (not optimal, I know, but it’s just my preference).

Hey man, I’ve been following a similar, if not the same strategy, and I’ve been doing ok in the strength sports arena

That right there is the major point that I think is most misunderstood.

No one has that much time. Seriously.

I mean, has there ever been a guy who “slow gained” his way to a max muscle gain of over 80lbs?

Your greatest gains in size will likely be before the age of 30. By that, I mean seriously large jumps in body weight with most of it being muscle. That ain’t happening that much after you stop growing completely and after the age of 25.

Some of these guys are being misled by people who do think they have forever for serious changes in how they look.

They don’t. Real talk. if you aren’t pretty fucking huge by the age of 25-30, you may as well give that extreme shit up.

Also, we have a whole thread about beards in the GAL forum.

This thread isn’t the place for it.

It’s good to know I have anywhere from 2-7 years to get fucking huge then

I don’t know how you look…but if you aren’t there by now, good luck.

Most of the guys able to pull hat off had gotten to a seriously impressive size by the age of 25…and by that I do not mean the average person here. I am talking about standing out like savagenation or Steely D here.

Weird that my edit to my post didn’t go through

But it’s good to know I have 2-7 years to get fucking huge after adding on ~95lbs from day 1 of when I first started.

yeah, like we discussed earlier, stop counting all of the “gains” before the age of 18.

Cool. Read through my training logs, there’s pictures there somewhere.

Edit: I have a meet this Saturday, I’ll post pictures and videos here when everything is all said and done.
Professor X wrote:

Now, I don’t consider myself ‘pretty fucking huge’ because I’ve stood next to, trained, and competed with dudes who are truly ‘pretty fucking huge’, but, the gains I have made have all been since the age of 36. At 36, I was 170 with 14+ inch arms and never really lifted ‘heavy’.

Hence, the ‘fast track’ method of gaining versus the ‘slow, lean road’. With time on your heels, aintnobodygottimeforabz ← see what I did there?

In fact, I will say that reading some of your posts, PX, about age and such put the bug in my head that maybe this would be a great challenge to pursue, so thanks for that, you bastard

I watched one of your vids and while you look like you lift, you don’t seem “extremely muscular” to me.

I gained over 100lbs to where I am right now. I think those of us in this thread discussing this topic have the GOAL of being way more muscular.
