Full Capacity Training

I love your training Cappy! It sounds like tons of fun. [/quote]

Thanks DZ! I try to have fun with stuff! For the most part, I do!

I’m way behind in posting reports. Nothing unusual there! Been keeping up with regular weight training and classes, just not enough time to get here and log it.

Monday MT class: drills, then a round or two of sparring and trying to work the techniques in.

Wednesday’s MT class: Entirely sparring. Good stuff! Sometimes I feel like I just need to forget about learning something new and just work on using what I’ve got. So I love sparring. And having a different partner every round is good. It teaches you to adapt. Depending on the variables, some partners are a lot harder than others. Man, I wish I could just spar at least twice a week. It would be a huge help.

Wed. BJJ: Worked on side guard. Yeah. Whatever. Was OK. This stuff is really hard.

Lifting: Holding ground on everything. I’m thinking about joining a new Anytime Fitness that just opened up about 3.5 miles from home. There’s absolutely nothing within 15-20 miles of where I live and even though I can train at home, my basement gets pretty damn cold come Jan. So I think I’ll suck it up and join for a year. They offer 1, 2 and 3 month memberships, but it’s cheaper to pay the full year price and be done with it. It’s not THAT bad of a place. They use the new Nautilus line and they do have two squat racks and a decent amount of free weights. Whatever. I can fill in with stuff at home if need be … the point being that when my basement is 50-something I can always go there. It’s close, it’s open 24/7 and I can train during non-busy times. That’s all that matters to me. I did a simple full body workout (there) on Friday. It will suffice.

Sat: Hiked 4 miles with one of my ACDs, then attended an Eddie Bravo BJJ seminar. Good grief. Outrageous! Lots of “fun,” but tons of work. What the hell was I thinking? I’ve never drilled for 4+ hours before. There were no breaks. (Meaning: no snacks and the only water available was what you brought with you!) I’m bruised, beat and my head is spinning. But I loved it. Kind of ballsy to attend a seminar with only 6 weeks of BJJ under my belt, but what the heck? Bravo is a very unique and unconventional individual … which I knew going in. It was pretty awesome just watching him demonstrate his stuff. Sheesh! Trying to replicate it was another story … Still, it was an incredible experience. I’m probably going to be dreaming about all this stuff tonight.

I’m shot. Came home, took a very long, hot shower, fed all the critters, then ate everything I could lay my hands on. Literally … I could not stop eating. I felt like I could put away a half side of beef!

Gonna try to chill tomorrow. Might hit the weights or bag … maybe some cardio and/or a hike with one of the Cattle kids. Back to MT on Monday…

…and the beat goes on!

Cappy

Cappy…That’s way more than a beat! I would say its more like rolling thunder! The new gym sounds cool. Welcome to the before sun up club!

Willy,
Yeah … thanks! I feel like someone pounded the living crap outta me! When it’s happening you think you must be nuts for doing it. But later … later, you get thinking … and that’s when you get hooked. I can’t explain it. I guess it’s the challenge. I remember when I was a rookie lifter and wanted everything to happen overnight. All these years later and this isn’t any different … I want all the skills NOW, not tomorrow!

The gym will be what it is. Backup. Insurance. No excuses when it gets cold and miserable downstairs. I’ve slogged through a lot of long, dark winters. Time for plan B.

I’ve been keeping up on everyone’s logs … even if I don’t have time to post my own stuff I do try to stay updated on everyone else. I’ll try to post a bit more in the weeks to come!

Thanks!
Cappy

Give a report on the new Nautilus line – unless you get a space heater instead.

Sunday:

Bag work, run 40 min. Stretch. Hiked about 4 miles with my male early in the AM before anyone else was out.

Monday:

MT: Sparr entire class. Given a specific combo we were “supposed” to try to work in each round. Sometimes I could make it happen, sometimes not. Depends upon who I’m sparring with. Overall I felt like I was “on” today.

Lift: New gym. Two other people there. I like it that way. Just doing a full body right now to get used to the different assortment of stuff and see how long things take. A few folks straggled in toward the end and I got to watch the goofball show. Good grief, I’m gonna need blinders.

Incline DB press, DB OHP, lat raises just for grins, chins, seated parallel grip row (Machine) Leg press (plate loaded sled) leg extensions & seated leg curls (Machines) incline DB shrugs, L-flys, hypers, abs. Overall, decent effort, but nothing crazy.

Stretch (20 min)

Tuesday: Off (Yard work)

Wed:

MT: Passing and kick drills. Got nailed good on the left shin right below the knee. My fault … should have had the blocking leg turned out more. Ached for a full 40 minutes. That’s gonna leave a mark. Shrug I guess that’ll learn me! The rest of class was sparring, using whatever we’ve got and trying to work the kicks into the mix. Basically, pretty good times, 'cept any time anyone connected with my left shin it hurt like hell in spite of wearing shin pads. Ended with 10 minutes of conditioning hell. (Lots of upper body stuff like partner pushups, crunch & pad work, etc.)

BJJ: All rolling. We were an odd number of students today, so everyone had to take a turn at sitting out twice. Mostly good stuff. Most of the guys are willing to show me stuff to help me rather than just try to crush me. Rolled with the instructor twice. First time I was an asshat, second time I figured out what I was trying to do and did a much better job of doing it.

Came home and did lots of yard work.

Wed Oct 22:

MT Class: Sheesh! Tons of pad work. My partner was a no-show so I was paired with a 19 year-old with iron fists and a l-o-n-g reach. Pad drills went fine, but sparring … yikes! About 2 minutes into the second round he caught me square in the nose with a hard jab that snapped my head back and made me see stars. I think I made noise … a grunt or something, but came right back. (Kept my eyes open and hands up for sure) Next round he did it again and I knew I had to tell him to pull his punches a bit or he was going to put me out. We’re not supposed to be going full force anyhow, but he’s new. That tends to happen a lot with newbies. He was cool about it and very apologetic. Not a big deal to me, but I can’t spar if I’m in the ER with a broken nose.

BJJ:

Worked on spider guard, scissor sweeps. Since my partner wasn’t there I got paired with another newbie. This girl is in her early 20’s, about 5’9’, long-limbed and athletic looking. I’ve sparred with her once in MT and she seems to want to prove something. So I was kind of on my guard since I’ve never really rolled with her. Practicing the lesson for the day was fine … she was in control. But once we moved on to rolling she got nuts. Damnit, I can’t stand that shit. Her idea of BJJ is to either try to crush or scramble you to death. I can move fast when I need to, but I like to keep my cool and “feel” what I’m doing when I can. No way that was happening with her.

Bottom line, she ended up tweaking my elbow and lower left lumbar region. She kept grabbing my wrist and trying to wrench my fricking arm out of the socket. (I guess she knows an arm lock?) I wanted to kick her ass after putting up with her shit for several rounds, but she gave me her back 3 times in a row and I tapped her out all three times. I could tell she was pissed. I told her not to get frustrated, but to slow things down and think about things, try to counter or anticipate my moves. Oh, and I said, "Don’t give me your back cause I’ll take it! Then she did it again.

Left class sore as hell. Couldn’t get my right thumb to grasp or hold anything for the rest of the day. It was just muscle fatigue from holding the pads, but it was annoying as hell. Ate a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner cause I couldn’t even hold a fork. Yikes!

Thursday Oct 23:

Woke up with two very sore shoulders, sore forearms and an achy lower back.

4 mile hike with a dog

Massage! (YAY!!)

Should lift today, but might pass 'till tomorrow. I feel like I’ve been run over by a truck. Don’t know if I can grasp a bar hard enough to lift it anyhow. I sure as hell can’t hit the bag today. Yeah, I’m that sore. Good times!

I know folks that think I’m warped for enjoying the soreness…

Grilled cheese…that sounds like a slice of heaven. What I could make with smoked gouda, white cheddar, and havarti. Oh and some Tuscan bread and a lot of butter.

Now I’m hungry :expressionless:

I don’t mind normal DOMS, but this is just a royal pain in the neck. It’s not really just DOMS, it’s jacked shoulders and back soreness and some forearm DOMS thrown in for good measure.

Good grief! I can tell you’re quite the chief. I made it with reduced fat/salt Alpine Lace Swiss. I also made a Honeymoon salad: lettuce alone. Yeah, I really know how to live! To redeem myself just I made Toll House chocolate chip cookies and I’m making Paul Prudhomme’s Chicken and Seafood Jambalaya for dinner. But I’m usually not one for cooking fancy.

Love that jambalaya recipe!! When I was eating rice I made it all the time. Have pounds of South Louisiana andouille in my freezer today! Look for his French Market soup recipe. Cabbage and hamburger. It is simple easy and really fits the low glycemic diet.

I love going for walks with my wife. On vacation we hike a lot together, home we go for brisk walks.

I really dislike people who want to tweak my elbows. Makes me consider atemi waza.

BWAH! I guess I meant to say I hiked with my male DOG. My hubby wouldn’t go for a hike if I paid him. Not his thang; why walk when you can ride a hoss? Hm. He might have a point there …

Cappy

I guess a couple of kidney punches would be considered bad form? Dogs are the best company on long walks.

I tell ya Hel, if I could just get in close enough … Right now that’s my biggest problem. I really have to learn how to work their range better, staying just out of it and lure them into leaving me an opening. It’s a lot harder than having the huge reach advantage that most of these guys seem to have. On the up side, I do tend to have longish arms for my height, but it’s just not enough. I don’t know what it is about this class, but out of about 12 guys there are 2 who are under 6’ tall. It’s a lot of state troopers and city cops. Big, young, tall, fast guys.

And then there’s me. Sheesh!

Could be worse. The other token female is only 5’2". She really struggles, even when she spars with me.

I agree. I feel ‘naked’ if I go hiking alone.

Cappy

I’m only 5’5" – which is why I learned to kick inside of punches by the tall guys and to jam and counter-kick as well. The Judo came in handy when they tried to jam me.

But it can be pretty rough dealing with tall guys when you are starting out.

Friday:

BJJ:
New place, closer to home. Has a morning no-gi BJJ class Tues/Fri/Sat. Really like the way the instructor teaches. (I met him at the Eddie Bravo seminar) Very small class = lots of individual help and lots of practice.

I’m seriously thinking about going here over the winter. It’s a no-frills kind of place meaning, no BS contracts to mess with. I like that … just pay for what you do. I just can’t learn this stuff rolling once or twice (tops) a week.

If I go here then I’ll be doing MT on Monday, BJJ Tues, MT & BJJ Wed, off Thurs, BJJ Friday, BJJ Sat. Yup. Sounds like a winner to me!

Sat:
Lift: Had the “new” gym 99% to myself. One other person was there half of the time. Way cool.

Chest (Incline DB press) Shoulders (BB OHP, DB OHP, rear lat. DB raises, upright rows) Traps (Incline shrugs) Back (close grip pulldowns, seated rows, weighted hypers) Abs, forearms.

Cardio: Incline treadmill: 40 min.

There’s a steak with my name on it …

Cappy

You are one busy woman! So what minute do you fit the weights in?

Willy,

I tend to like to lift on MT and BJJ days. If I add more BJJ I’ll have to be careful not to end up too overly sore or tired (from lifting) on those days.

I suspect I’ll end up lifting Mon-Thurs-Sat … or something like that. Cardio I can do anytime, any day … it really doesn’t set me back.

My philosophy is that you become what you do: I’m very active, so I’ve managed to develop a tolerance for a high level of exercise.

Cappy

you become what you do – I really believe that. I see 70 year olds who are strong and physically active and mentally sharp and then I see people at 40 who are completely de-conditioned and ready to die.
