Full Capacity Training

When we finally settled here wife informed me it was her 15th move and she wasn’t going to move no more. Trust me you’ll survive.

I thought I’d have all this time to train, ride and do whatever while the house was under construction. I mean, what else would there be to do besides stay out of the way? Wrong! Until last night I haven’t been able to squeak in a class, a workout or even a run since Wed. Nice to have a break, but I’m getting rather antsy.

Hit BJJ class last night. Worked on a bunch of takedowns. Not my favorite thing, but that’s OK. Then we rolled for about 45 minutes. That’s a long time for a rookie to roll! This is a long class; average time is about 2 hours. (Plus a long commute.) I made up a bunch of meals before the kitchen got torn up so it was nice to come home from class and have a meal ready to wolf down. I’m always starving when I get home!

I don’t know if I’ll be able to make my MT class tomorrow morning, but I’m going to give the contractor a call and see if he needs me on the site first thing. If not, I can be back home by 10:15, so hopefully I can make the class. I missed one MT and one BJJ class last week and I really don’t want to miss more.

Hope to lift and do cardio today, but I’ve got a lot of other things that need catching up on first. I also have to run into the city to pick up some electrical stuff, so we’ll see.

Cappy

I threw two kids in the outdoor pen and one in the truck, taped a note to the door and went to class this AM. Living life dangerously!

MT:
Brutal class. 45 minutes of kicking. Did a lot of drills for different types of kicks. Accent was on speed. Sometimes I forget to breathe, which is interesting to say the least. Great class, but four hours later my back was a mess. Very tight. This too shall pass.

I’ve discovered it’s impossible to have 7-8 workers scattered throughout a 1,200 sq. ft. house and get anything done. No workout. Really itching to train now. Tomorrow it’s just the tile guy, so there will be less required of me and not as much noise and confusion. I’m lifting and doing some cardio no matter what. Everything else can take a back seat for a change. The kitchen looks great and they’ve been a fantastic crew to have around, but I’m ready to get my routine back to normal. I still have a lot of packing, unpacking and sorting to do, but I can chip away at that in my spare time.

Give 'em hell my friend. You sound as if you “have 'em between the ditches.”

Good to know all is going well.

Ha, ha! If they do, this will most likely be the response:

how would they do herding kids?

Mine will herd anything that moves. People, objects, power tools, animals … everything’s fair game. That’s pretty typical for this breed. It’s genetic. Problem is, they use a lot of bite, which you can see in the video. That’s also genetic, so kids and ACDs are not always good mix. Just waving your arms around or running across the lawn can be an issue. When they are young you work real hard to teach them that putting teeth on people is forbidden, but the instinct to use a grip on things that move usually stays with them for life. Some more so than others. My male was a tad wound up today and I almost got my butt tagged on the way to the barn this morning. That’s my fault for not getting him out and working him while the kitchen was under construction.

They’re not the breed for everyone, that’s for sure. A good one is beyond belief, but a bad one can be your worst nightmare.

We had some crossed with bull dogs or pit bulls being used to herd cattle in West Texas. A few excess ended up in shelters.

They herd by biting faces. After a number of incidents they became ineligible for shelter/adoption.

Pretty dogs, smart dogs, but who wants something that herds your children by biting their faces?

3 Labs
1 Mutt
1 Dachshund
Guess which one thinks it’s the alpha?
Good workouts on the MT. Speed is probably the hardest thing to keep up as we age.

I meant the kind of kids you put in the pen and tossed in your truck - LOL

Oh, looks like I may have found a work-out partner for January – at just the right weight and very strong with JuJitsu experience.

Awesome! I expect regular reports!

Tues, Sept 23:

Got my workout, got my cardio. Took it easy with lifting. I had two classes coming up Wed morning and didn’t want to cripple myself. Abs, chest, shoulders, neck, grip. All good! Felt great to get back at it! Calves a bit sore from Monday class. Nice blood bruise on rt. foot from all the kicking.

Wed, Sept 24

MT:

Worked on grabbing kicks and punch combos. Complicated stuff. Lots of slow drilling, then bringing it up to speed. Good stuff! One round of sparring to end. I was on my game today! I love when that happens!

BJJ:
Q&A day, followed by technique and rolling. Managed (somehow) to employ the technique we learned today and got a submission. YAY! I love this stuff when it works! Then rolled with the instructor (twice) and came face to face with how much I DON’T know. Crap. Great classes, both of them!

FWIW, I’m bruised as hell.

Came home to a really screwed up house and three really hyper dogs. Scraped the barn, threw two balls and a Frisbee and did my best to catch up on paperwork. Feeling really … cramped. I want my space back. Things look good, but camping out between two floors is losing it’s appeal. I’ve had enough already.

I think things will be more tolerable by the weekend. Let’s hope. We’ve had great weather thus far, but that’s supposed to change tomorrow and that will complicate things further. I’m tired. Really, REALLY tired.

Cappy

What an insane rest of the week it was. Spent the better part of two days holed up in a damp, dull basement. Had to be here, but there wasn’t much I could do. Got in some cardio each day and a lifting workout, but had to pass on Saturday night BJJ.

I just hope next week sees things get back to normal. I’m able to fix meals, but still don’t have a refrigerator upstairs yet. I’ve been trying to operate from two floors for awhile and it’s getting kind of frustrating. I hope the situation will improve soon, but I do love what has been done thus far!

Monday: Sept 29

MT:

Combo drills. Neither my partner nor I were firing on all our pistons. It would have been comical if I had a sense of humor about getting hit and kicked, but I didn’t. Her head was shoved further up her butt than mine, but we were both performing like asshats. Then everyone had to pick a number … 1 or 2. That’s always a bad sign.

We did 90 seconds of sparring, then all the #1’s did a minute of conditioning (like burpees) and all the #2’s hadto do something else (like pushups.) Then all the #1’s rotated to the right and we did 90 seconds of sparring with a new partner, then each group did another round of a different conditioning exercise. This went on nonstop for the remainder of the class.

I pulled my head out of my ass, got my game on and actually went on to do pretty well. Got to spar with some different guys, one who let me clobber him with my right cross three times before he finally realized I was gonna keep hitting him if he didn’t get his guard up. Ha! I know how THAT feels!.

Caught up with the other female after class. She never got with the program and was feeling a bit down on herself. I tried to remind her that everyone has an occasional bad workout and not to get too hung up on it. She’s usually very upbeat, but she said that lately she just hasn’t been performing well. She’s not a lifter and I’m thinking maybe she thought progress would always be linear? Makes me glad years of lifting have taught me that most things in life go: one step forward, two steps back!

Weights: (Finally!)

Legs: Extensions, TBDL, SLDL, lunges. Arms: DB curls superset with CGB, hammer curls superset with cable extensions. Abs: Crunches, hanging leg raises.

Stretch: 20 min.

Wow…what I would give for one step forward and 2 back. I feel like its 1 forward and 25 back!

You sure are right about life itself, where nothing is ever linear, and the down cycles can be exponental.

With all these mathmatical analogies you would never guess I placed on a 10th grade level for freshman math at college…

Good post and workout Cappy

It is good to work through an off day. If you are ever in a real situation in an off day, having worked through it has taught you how to cope.

Well, those of you who have done major renovations know that it will totally screw up your normal schedule. Never having done one, I had these visions of being able to get out and ride my horse, train, and do my regular routine while workers worked. Um, NOT! So here I am almost two weeks into this project and really loving the house transformation, but hating the fact that I can’t get anything else done.

Today I planned to visit a MMA studio to either observe a class or take a freebie. I’m thinking that it won’t be long before winter weather makes my normal 60 minute commute to my current dojo almost impossible and I want to have plan B. However, that was not to happen today. Just as I was getting ready to leave the tile guy (and his helper) showed up. I was expecting him to arrive on Monday, but he decided to start today. Then the plummer (and his helper) arrived. Then the GC arrived. Let’s just say that four hours later I was starting to wonder if I would even make my 5:30 Jiu-Jitsu class!

Alas, I decided to stay home and cook a wonderful dinner in our “new,” albeit unfinished kitchen. The hubby is soon leaving on his annual horse/camping vacation and I thought it better to hang out together than jam into the city to take a class, then grab take-out on the way home. Kinda hard to justify take-out when you’ve just invested a buttload of capital in a new kitchen!

I know things will get back to normal soon enough. I guess that’s age and wisdom talkin’!

Cappy

Be glad you didn’t tear out all of your kitchen and then discover that the cabinets weren’t coming in on schedule and your salesperson had been fired for screwing up.

Or how we lived for two months on the sink in the bar and a hot plate.

Glad things are coming along for you.

I love your training Cappy! It sounds like tons of fun.
