Worked on a bunch of stand-up defenses for rear attacks, some tosses, sweeps and ways to escape certain wrist/arm holds. There was a 20-ish girl there that I was able to partner with.
She’s a former wrestler and plays semi-pro football. (Gonna have to go watch that!) She was great and was able to give me a lot of pointers and stuff to work on. We drilled for half the class, then rolled.
I still don’t know enough about what I’m doing to get very far, but I’m strong and aggressive and sometimes that’s just enough to keep my head above water!
Many women never get the combination of being strong and aggressive. That makes a huge difference, and is part of the having tested themselves somewhere along the line.

Well, been there, done that in just about everything I’ve ever done. Skiing. Riding. Lifting. When it comes to people and relationships I like to think of myself as being “assertive” rather than aggressive.
IMO, the former means having what it takes to get the job done, the latter means doing it with a hard edge.
Sunday:
Elliptical: 30 minute intervals
heavy bag: 15 min
Got a call from my M-I-L. My husband’s Godfather’s son’s wife died from brain cancer. Age 48. Wake tomorrow, funeral Tuesday. Damn.

Thanks for all the condolences. The wake was rough. Stood in line for over an hour just to get into the funeral home. I kinda figured as much. Been around long enough to lose some young friends and there’s always a huge turn out.
Pam’s been dying for five years. At least she was able to get her kids through high school and well on their way to adulthood before the cancer took her. She had a huge extended family, so there was a lot of sadness, but a lot of comfort too … if you know what I mean. Everyone pretty much saw this coming.
MT class: 8:30
Great class … all sparring. We took turns working our defense against specific punches and combos as told. Built on that until the last few rounds had a little of everything. No kicks though. No headgear either. Time to get used to getting hit and reacting. One partner gave me a few pointers that should help with some of my defense sticking points.
The school owner told the other token female and I that even though it’s not the program we signed up for, we can have unlimited access to any MT and BJJ class we want to take. I’ve been going (to MT) for five months (bjj only a couple of weeks) and she’s not far behind me. I think we’ve only missed two classes each since we started. He said he gets women who sign up, but most vanish somewhere between one and two months.
He’s hoping our presence in the MT and BJJ classes will encourage other women so he’s giving us free rein to take as many classes as we want. I don’t know how many more times I can get there during the week (long drive, especially in the winter) but hey, I’ll take whatever I can get until the bad weather hits!
Came home from the wake to more packing. Moved a lot of boxes from upstairs to downstairs, then helped move two refrigerators.
All sparring. The instructor would tell us what we could use. Swap partners every round and more stuff got added to the mix. Eventually, it was “everything you’ve got.” Fun stuff! Again, for different reasons some of the guys are much harder to spar with than others. Sometimes it’s a height/reach situation, other times it’s just their style or technique that is hard to break down or figure out. You don’t really get enough time in one round to sort everything out. This was a HUGE class, so there were some guys I didn’t get a chance to spar with. I think I got a lot of the tough ones though.
BJJ: Drills, then rolling for rounds, swapping partners every round again. Was OK. Still too much of a doofus to give a good report. Sorry.
It was a beautiful day and I really wanted to get out and ride a horse or bike or hike with my younger male dog … who has been driving me crazy lately. But alas, errands and whatnot robbed me of the chance. I will admit, I was pretty tired come late afternoon. I probably could have squeezed in a treadmill workout, but I was getting sore and tired … so I didn’t. I decided to give it a rest until tomorrow.

As everyone says…“listen to your body”. You’re putting in a lot of work both in and out of the gym. Take some time to rest and recover. This advice is easy to hear but hard to listen to.

That’s the truth. I got myself into a nasty overtraining cycle when I was 27 or 28 that was hard to pull out of. Don’t do the same stupid thing I did.
No lifting today. Spent some time packing and sorting through things. Took a break mid-day and watched the documentary Beyond Belief. If you haven’t seen it you should seriously consider watching it. (Can watch it instantly on Netflix)
Their husbands were murdered. A colleague was kidnapped. And a nation on the other side of the world cries out for help. Now, two 9/11 widows fight their own war on terror.
As they make the journey from comfortable suburban neighborhoods to the most desperate Afghan villages, they discover a powerful bond with each other, an unlikely kinship with widows halfway around the world, and a profound way to move BEYOND BELIEF.

I upped the calcium/mag just slightly. No really bad, lasting foot cramps since. I’m not convinced I’ve fixed it, but maybe that helped? Time will tell.
Now I’ll gladly take any suggestions you might have for a dog who barfs bile almost every night. Again, I’ve tried about a gazillion things, several that come vet-suggested. No dice. I’m starting to think the asshat is a psychological puker. After all, one of his many nick-names is Captain Quirk

Sometimes I wear pants. Depends on if the kids are getting out of school down the street.
It’s easy for me to fall behind with this. Such is life. Still lifting and doing everything else, just not real good about plugging the stats into the thread.
Friday (9/12):
Lift
Run 40 min.
stretch
Saturday (9/13):
Powerwalk on incline: 45 min.
Picked up kitchen tile. I’m such a doofus. When the distributor called it never dawned on me to ask how many boxes there were. I drove 40 minutes only to discover it was 36 boxes of tile … at 50+ lbs. per box and several bags of grout. Ok, so two trips and LOTS of lifting later, it’s all here and stacked in the garage.
BJJ: The champ was there tonight, albeit a bit late. He drives in from pretty far away. Bummer for him on a Sat. night. We were working on side mount control and escapes when he arrived. He watched what we were doing, made a few tweaks, then we rolled. Got in some good work with a few different partners. Most of the Sat. crowd is very helpful and willing to give tips and pointers. It’s a long class (almost 2 hrs.), much longer than the morning classes during the week.
Took a little break after 30 minutes while Marco talked about an upcoming event in NYC. OK, so I still can’t understand 2/3 of what he says, but I just happened to be next to a Brazilian student who helped translate a bit. The event sounds awesome. Too soon for me to think about, but I’d love to go watch. I’ll see how things evolve.
Marco gets done talking about the tournament, then turns to me and says, “You too. You come too! You’ll do good!” Um, no. I don’t think they have classes for people with 4 weeks of experience. Sheesh …
Rolled more, then went home and wolfed down a huge steak. Slept like a dead lady … only up maybe 3 times. Must be a new record.
Sunday (9/14):
Off! (YAY!)
Packed. Lots of up and down stairs with heavy boxes. This sucks. I want this job to be DONE already!
