Friends Calling You Out

Okay, I imagine most of us here in the “Combat” forum train in some sort of combat…
This question is to all of you whom train and have friends that don’t.

Do you have certain friends who “call you out”? They get a little drunk or are in a pissy mood and know you have fighting background and they start spewing random shit at you like…

“Listen bro, I’m a lot bigger then you…if we fought, I’d kill you.”

or things like that…If this happens to you, post your story!

It happens, though not all the time.

My circle of people is pretty well known for being physically violent though- in our younger days, we all got into numerous streetfights, scrapes, and scuffles, so it’s kind of a given between us that we assume any given day, depending on state of drunkeness, we could all kick the shit out of each other pretty well.

With the better fighters I’m friends with, it’s more like,

“Yea you can box, but I’ll get you on the ground and pound your face in.”

“Whatever dude, I’ll put you out before you even get that close.”

yeeeaaa drinkin.

As I remember it he opened up with…

“Bro, let’s settle this in the octagon!”

me: “Chill bro, I don’t know if I can control myself”

him: “If you were my bro you’d fight me bro”

me: “Don’t say I didn’t warn you when I armbar your ass”
this is when I hulked out and ripped a stop sign out of the ground

him: “Ok ok, we’ll chillax”

and then we went back to the frathouse and listens to some dave mathew’s band

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

did you wear polo’s and flipflops while you listened to Dave Matthews? If you didn’t you’re obviously not real fans…

It’s happened to me in the past. I would tell them we could setup a time to “spar” when they weren’t shit faced so it was more fair. Later I’d bring it up to see if they changed their mind. If they hadn’t I would just dominate them. Once the word got around within my circle of friends it stopped.

Edit: None of my friends at this point had any real experience fighting.

Mine goes something like this…

I’ve been training in combat sports for the better part of my life…

Boxing - since I was 6, now 22.
Wrestling - Since I was 12
Muay Thai - since I was 19
Ju Jitsu - since I was 19

…Me and a friend were watching TUF, the episode where Roy beat Kimbo, my friend is fat, just like Nelson. When he won, the gloating began that the “fat guy beat Kimbo!”.
I explained that Roy’s just better on the ground and knows how to keep control and smother.

My friend blew off what I was saying and said “Once the bigger guys gets on top, you’re screwed.”
I told him this wasn’t necessarily true.

Then he said “Well, all I know is that’s how I’d kick your ass…”

He’s 6’2 and 288.

I’m 5’10 and 188.

I have a very short fuse and told him “Well lets go roll at my brother’s after this, I’ll even let you crucify me…”

We get out on the mats at my brothers house, I teach him how to crucify me.

I get into position and tell him to go to town.

He’s got me crucified and start wrapping on my head, just like Nelson did to Kimbo.

I pushed off the ground with my feet and pulled myself out from under him.

He latched on to my arm and said…

“You got out of the crucifix but…”

Then I yanked my arm out from his grasp and snaked my other arm around his neck.

He then slams all his weight into my ribs, so, I cinch that bitch in.

Then he ends up flipping himself over me, so we’re laying in a straightline, vertical, but I still have his neck.
I cinched in even tighter and he QUICKLY tapped out.

This kind of goes back to the, “Who wins in a fight, a boxer or a bodybuilder?”

People love talking about that shit, even though it’s kind of like asking, “Who wins in a basketball game, a basketball player or a football player?”

Ah, who do you think is gonna win?

I learned boxers (as opposed to the MT) throw a much harder hook than I’m used to. Especially the hook to the body. Especially when you’re stupid enough to do it with your friend thats far more experienced and you both have on bag gloves at the time (didn’t have my gear with me… once again, stupid).

This is the exact reason I dont drink. That, and the fact that alcohol slows your metabolism.

LOL!!!

Someone did once, I told him to box me and he chose not to.

I’ve been in some fights outside of boxing, they’re weird. People always talk too much too.

As others have said I invite them to the gym to spar anytime they like. A couple have taken me up on this and gone away impressed with the sport (and slightly bruised.)

Only once I had to put someone to sleep in a bar to shut him up.

I have close friends back home that like to “fuck” with me…but they just love to bullshit around. Nothing more.

But I have had a few guys over the years “challenge” me at our MMA school to spar and such. They would show up,but never strap the gear on and do something. OR they would spar with other people as if I wasn’t there. I would just laugh it off…I don’t take people like that serious in the first place.

I tell them to bring 1 grand, show up at my gym, sign a waiver if they really think they can do it. otherwise they’re not worth my time, effort, and skillset. Usually shuts most people up. Fuck all the posturing.

Only time someone kept talking shit I just calmly got out a napkin wrote up a makeshift waiver, pulled out 200 bucks and said “this is a down payment…” i took off my shirt, said “I’ll be outside” and waited. Changed his tone immediately.

Beware the fury of the patient man.

I don’t drink, but some of my friends do, and occasionally they suggest they’d be able to take me out, cause you know, that martial arts shit doesn’t work.
Somehow they get the idea that studying judo makes it impossible for you to throw a punch, much less as well as them who have never trained in anything, and that somehow their superior haymaker skills are going to win out over grappling.

So I pick them up and kata-guruma them into the concrete, killing them instantly.

But seriously though, I just laugh it off. I say stupid stuff like, “Oh, I’d love to try it out but I don’t have my gi on, and I can’t fight without my gi” or “I need to strap my ankle first” or “I haven’t cut my nails” or “If sensei finds out I’ve been fighting he’ll tomoe-nage me out the club door”
