Friend Needs Help

My friend went to get his blood taken and the results came back yesterday. The doctor told him that his good cholesterol is too low, and his bad cholesterol is a little too high. His white blood cells count is low.She compared him to an 80 year old man, meanwhile hes only 17. He’s 5’8 187 mostly muscle but does have a stomach. Hes basically shitting his pants because of what this doctor said. She also said that he should eat more greens n stop working out for muscles and just do aerobics. He wants to know whats going on so he asked me to post this on the website.
THanks

His cholesterol sucks and his immune system is suffering. EAT BETTER FOOD.

The whole thing about working out for muscles is idiotic. As for the rest, he should heed her advice. In addition to Aerobics and more greens, i’d incorporate flax oil and an increase in fiber into his diet. I was recently found to have ridiculously high ldl cholestrol (280; im 5’8’', 180,) but my hdl (good cholestrol) was also very high; indicating that my hdl/ldl ratio wasnt bad. From what ive been reading, thats most important. As for the white cell thing, I have no clue. Im sure far more enlightened members than myself can answer that one. Good luck to your buddy…

One thing to keep in mind: the #1 factor in cholestoral is genetics. Some are amazingly low in spite of their bad diets, and some are frighteningly high in spite of their good diets.

This doesn’t mean give up. It means that it’s possible he might have to work extra hard if he has a poor genetic disposition for proper cholestoral balance. This means really watching the diet. Just something to keep in mind.

Follow the advice of others here and he should see improvement.

michaelv,
True, genetics plays a large part, but my whole family has low cholesterol and I was at 250 on Columbus Day. I did, however, get down to 212 on Martin Luther King Day after 6-8 weeks of a few simple changes in my diet.

  1. Less red meat (more chicken)
  2. More salads, especially when dining out
  3. Plain oats in the morning (good fiber, oats seem to raise HDL)
  4. 1-2 pieces of fruit during the day–clementines, apples, bananas
  5. Snack on almonds (good fats)
  6. Barlean’s Flaxseed Oil–I didn’t want to drink the nasty stuff, so I found their capsules. The capsules aren’t supposed to be anywhere as good as the straight stuff, but I was looking for solutions that weren’t “radical” or unpleasant, because I wanted to be able to incorporate them into my lifestyle and not dread them (and therefore try to skip them).
  7. Metamucil capsules

The end result was a drop of 36 points in <2 months. My doc was pleased, and wants me to get a blood test in 3-4 months to make sure it is continuing to go down.

If he’s alive today, there’s no reason to believe he’s going to keel over tomorrow–unless of course he infarcts from worry! And good lord, but DON’T give up working out. Adding some cardio would be worthwhile, but geez!

What is the triglyceride count?

Can’t help you with the low white blood cell count.

Read TC’s The Heart of The Matter. He actually found that cholesterol is for the most part been unfairly villainized by the media/medical industry. It’s a great article.

First of all, actual numbers would help. Also, was he fasting at the time his blood was drawn? Does he take any meds or has he used any supps or steroids?

Also, if you could post a few days of his typical daily diet and also a description of his training regimen. If he eats like the typical teenager these days, with fast food and junk food, his cholesterol may be out of range.

He may be overtraining and under-recovering, which can lead to decreased WBC’s. Does he get sick frequently?

Any additional info would help in order to provide better recommendations.

Take care,

Ryan

He told me he doesn’t remember his triglyceride count, but his diet is really good, it contains vegetables such as brocoli, and peppers, he does eat meat such as chicken, steaks. The only supps hes ever taken were creatine, 1A-D which he stopped taking, T-BOMB, cytogainer and whey protein. He takes vitamins, but overall his diet is good, obsivously once a while he’ll eat some crap, but what teenager doesn’t. Right now we’re bulking, he hasn’t done any cardio, but is starting too.

Also he told me his mother has a lot of those problems with cholesterol and crap like that. His good cholesterol is at 28 the doctor said, when it should be b/w 32-36 supposedly. Thanks for the help so far guys, its greatly appreciated.

Also, he was fasting, he doesn’t take any meds and he never took steroids. Hes been off the 1A-D for about a two weeks.
