Floor Presses or Full Bench Press

Ive been doing Db floor presses only lately, and have been very happy with my strength increases, and lack of shoulder impingement.

Ive been doing these for sets of 1-3 reps with near my maximal weight. Im not gonna switch to a higher volume lighter weight protocol for a bit, and am wondering if I should just keep doing floor press, or do full ROM bench.

Im not competing just going for all around strength and size developement.

If you are happy with what you are doing and feeling good then keep doing it. Just one point though, don’t expect DB floor presses by themselves to improve your flat bench press much.

I usually have barbell floor presses in rotation with all my other ME upperbody movements. I think this allows you to handle more weight and get used to benching heavy, board presses also do this I think.

If I ever did db floor presses it was for my RE work for 3-4 sets of 10-12 reps.

To each his own. If you get results with what you’re doing don’t switch it until it stops producing gains.

How do you get the dumbbells in position for floor presses, since you can’t kick them up like on a bench?

Floor Press, Incline Press, Rack Lockouts, Dips, and Chins are the only ME Bench Exercises I can do since I am always without a spotter.

I’d rather use full ROM any day because it keeps all joint angles healthy. However, since you mentioned shoulder problems, yeah, it would be better for you to stick to floor presses. Keep on doing it as long as it helps you reach your goals, whatever they are.

to the OP. Im not sure if barbell bench impinges your shoulders more. so I will say if it doesnt then I would rotate between floor presses with bb and regular bench presses. do cylces of 2-4 four weeks on each movement.

I lift the first DB onto my leg wit both hands, and then lift the other one on to the other leg with both hands. It was hard at first, but now i can easily get the 90’s in position.

I want to switch to barbell floor press, but dont have a good setup at my gym currently.

How do you keep the first one from falling off while lifting the second one onto your leg?

Use board presses with the shirt and reverse bands with 2 and 4boards. I’ve got had a shoulder impingement fixed in one and I have one in my right shoulder now and by doing this i have been able to still train and a pretty high level. I don’t do floor presses but then again maybe it is because i weigh over 300 and have a hard time getting up off of the floor.hahahaha

I pick the first one up, and then reach around it to the other one, so basically its balancing on my leg, leaning against the inside of my elbow. Sounds hard but is easy…

This is the best method for working heavy that i have found with out a spotter or tools like boards and chains.

I have arthritis in my shouders and elbows. The floor presses stress my chest a lot less than standard benching. The FP is a bit tougher on my elbows but I have changed my weight, frequecy and volume to deal with that.

I had a great workout doing those today::

60lbs x15
65lbs x15
70lbs x15
90lbs x5( PR )
