I’m sure most of you have take flax seed oil. I have a question about storage. At some stores, they keep their flax refrigerated while some places do not. I’ve heard that flax should be refrigerated, but then why do some stores not refrigerate it? What if it was bought online and shipped through the mail, would that be bad for it since it’s not kept cold when shipped? Does it matter if the capsule form is kept refrigerated, or is this all mainly for the kind that comes in a bottle and has been opened? Also, I take about 6 grams spaced out through the day, would you say this is a decent amount or not enough to make it worthwhile? Thanks for your help
Think of flaxseed oil or Udo’s or whatever as a perishhable product like milk, but instead of taking hours to go bad when you leave it outside the fridge, it takes days or weeks. This gives plenty of time to account for shipping to the store where you bought it and for getting it to your home from that store while still having a fresh bottle.
The flax in the gelcaps are sealed from outside air so they have nothing interacting with them to start the spoilage process. I would guess the stores that don't refridgerate the product are either selling a nitrogen packed oil that won't spoil at room temperature until opened, or just don't have a clue and are selling you a potentially spoiled product.
You can always call the manufacturer and ask what they recommend for their particular oil.
For flax in bottles: freeze for long storage. Once the bottle is opened use it within about 4 weeks (the stuff goes rancid fast!). A very good brand is barleen’s. Many (?most) good brands have expiration dates on the bottle. Flax in caps cannot go rancid as easily since it is not exposed to oxygen and storage is not as critical.
