Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 2)

Ok…ok… i didnt say i agreed with everything!

My confession is that I am a Rip apologist and a SS fan.

One of the reasons I like Rippetoe is that he writes well, is unapologetic (even when he is dead ass wrong), and stands by his convictions.

He also says some outrageous stuff that I kind of like - a fully grown adult male weighs more than two hundred pounds (despite the fact that I am 190).

He is one of the reasons I pushed my son to consider Physics as a major in college rather than Engineering - the jury is still out since he is a Senior in HS.

I have run SS a few times, am running it currently at sixty years old to rebuild a base after a long time off.

So yeah, he is a bit of a pompous and bombastic asshole, but I’m a fan.

Flame free!

He once said " Strength is the best conditioning…" and that has stuck with me

My favorite quote is, “Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general.”

He’s an interesting cat for sure.

SS was good, doubt I’ll do it again. Kind of want to try the Texas method.

Quick question, What has he done to be disliked? I’m not up to date on this drama.

Starting Strength is kind of a rip off on Bill Starr’s work, Rippetoe has been outspoken about the NCSC and the CSCS certification, he’s kind of arrogant, and left Crossfit and has bashed it.

I am not sure how old you are, but Texas Method was described to me by my SSC as an intermediate program “for a younger man” than I.

My SSC actually recommended 531 for me when I stalled. He told me Rippetoe and Wendler were friends, not rivals. I actually have a shirt that is an election shirt for Rippetoe and Wendler in 2020. It fits pretty well if you know what I mean.

I am actually running SS again right now, just finished my second workout. I’m kind of dreading it which, of course, isn’t a good thing.

But am also looking forward to getting some base strength back. I certainly have been a pussy lately.

Well I know who I’m voting for.

Not sure what your training background is but you could probably do Texas Method at the young age of 39. I was 55 when my SSC told me that.

Do you have the books?

I have them but they are in storage in Oregon.

I think there are some wildly delusional people on this forum. Specifically when it comes to aesthetics. Like body dysmorphia but positive. Not that I’m some stage ready god or something. Lots of good advice, coaching, and logs to get ideas from still though.

I would be interested in hearing more of your thoughts on this.

I think the nature of the site is body dysmorphic in some ways. We are mostly judgmental with respect to the fitness of others and fat phobic.

Please excuse my writing, for I am simple. That being said, I suffer from body dysmorphia and I’m extremely critical of myself. I look in the mirror and see a giant fat guy. This forum is extremely positive 99.9% of the time thankfully and people feel safe to post pictures of themselves. It’s rare, but someone will post a image and you can tell, for instance they have zero quad development, and they will go on to say “their legs are the most aesthetically pleasing” part of their overall physical appearance. Which in my eyes, that person has a positive form of dysmorphia. Where I see a fat guy in my mirror, they look in their mirror and see jacked.

I am not sure if you are insecure in your writing or if my attacks on idiots has made you less than confident.

I typically am only critical of other’s writing if they are arrogant and obnoxious.

I might be exhibiting writing dysmorphia here, but I think you write fine. Hemingway wrote simply as well.

In my experience, when posting pictures humbly with genuine interest in feedback, the forum will be supportive. It is one of the reasons why I love this website.

I am similar. I see a skinny fat guy in the mirror.

I think this is our nature, to be critical of ourselves.

Were I to post a picture to prove how jacked and fit I am, I am sure I would get taken down a few notches - rightfully so.

But when someone posts a picture with some background, this forum tends to be positive.

Love your screen name by the way. My daughter is a Swiftie, my son, not so much.

It’s a clever name.

I wish I could take credit for it. My boxing trainer changed me from Taylor “The Mangler” to Taylor “Too Swift” at 14 when I was fast for my weight class and she was starting to get popular. He thought it was hilarious, my 14 year old self was mortified.

Cool story!

My son is a Jake Gyllenhall fan so he thinks Taylor is not accepting responsibilities for her failed relationships and weaponizing her music.

He is seventeen and thinks too much.

In his defense he has credit Bill on many occasion.

More than i can say about another indvidual who knocked off Bills work. Which i wont mentioned.

This is true. I am a Rip fan and he acknowledges Starr’s influence on him.

SS is so simple I think it pisses others off that they didn’t think of it. The Fahves are certainly not original.

GOMAD on the other hand, maybe.

My SSC was using an Andy Baker program and Baker worked for Rippetoe. It was and 8/6/4 progression I think. Jordan Feigenbaum started Barbell Medicine after working for Rip. Pretty sure Rip was fine with those guys going off on their own.

Now SS is starting their own franchised gyms, selling barbells and belts.

More power to them.

I don’t think there is anything actually new with respect to picking heavy shit up. New packaging, some research behind it, but it’s pretty much add weight and keep lifting.

Yeah… i like his stuff.

I have shirts that say “Strong people are harder to kill”

100%

I had the personal joy of having Mark Rippetoe refer to my approach of improving my deadlift without deadlifting as stupid and then not acknowledging me when I pointed out that he had a program just like that in Practical Programming for Strength training AND “Mean old Mr. Gravity”, so that was cool.

I bet he didn’t count on me being such a fan!
