Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Genuinely laughed out loud.

Confession:
Last night doing log press. The gym attendant that helped time me is better at the log lift than I am.
He weighs in at 90kg.
He can lift the log 10 times in row. I was all over the place after 6.
I think I’m possibly stronger for 1 rep. But his reps for time is superior to mine.

The ego is shattered.

I’ll be damned… apparently top researchers in the field of exercise research rescently have done different studies and published their results showing bro type splits can be very productive. Well no shit… us old fuckers could have told you that.

Christ after having to hear all the newbies squawk about the superiority of full body because of science…

I’m not even that old and knew that. Sometimes I think we should put the fund for these studies to better use (like funding my BioTest supplement habit).

As of late it appears that research is actually validating certain things that has been considered bro science by some.

Anecdotal evidence is still evidence whether some people want to believe it or not.

I’ve been off work for 6 weeks and have had a lot of free time, I’ve been reading loads of articles, watching loads of YouTube, listening to loads of podcast.
If I was to put forth a very uneducated, unexperienced meta analysis of every thing I’ve absorbed:
The training split doesn’t matter, the programme doesn’t matter, pick something that you can do consistently, something you can recover from, do it with intent.
Add weight to the main compound lifts.
Eat to suit your body composition goals.
Drink lots ot water.
Eat a g of protein per lb of body weight.
Sleep as much as possible.

You think exercise science comes out with ā€œstate the obviousā€ research- try behavioural science

Some of my favourite conclusions:

  1. Competent and attractive candidates are more likely to get elected
  2. People tend to avoid hard things
  3. Being hungry affects our decision making

or, as Thaler put it, ā€œthe psychologists weren’t interested in working with us economists because what was ā€œgrounbreakingā€ to us is taught in freshman coursesā€

It’s really a problem of varying degrees of optimalality. Like how optimal is either one at any given point? Super-mega optimal or just minorly optimal?

yeah… There’s definitely some really cool and impactful stuff, but there’s also a lot of stuff that I swear is written for economists who spend too much time writing proofs and not enough time in the real world

I blame Ripplistiltskin and Stronglifts for fooling everyone like 10 years ago.

Just as… of course session volume. Intensity and exercise selection plays a roll. Ill look into it more it get more details.

The oldest boy will be home this week… ill see if i cant find the research and have him break it down into plain gym speech for me.

Corrected.

Honestly didn’t think it was necessary to do so, for the aspiring meathead the typo might be better advice haha.

First… never mention the name Stronglifts in my presents …

But yeah the the went a long way of creating the notion that bro splits are complete shit and only good for guys running gear,

The reality being ,sure programs like that are fine for someone starting out but once your into it long enough at some point over time shit evolves for many reasons. But again allot of people who want too scream to the heavens about it in some cases havent been around long enough to know that.

Part of the reason splits got a bad rap is because allot of beginners didnt know what the fuck they were doing in the first place or really wasnt needed at their current stage of development anyway.
