The sad thing is, these studies NEEDED to happen because a lot of kids these days won’t do ANYTHING unless there is a study to prove it. You tell them that people got jacked for decades running bro-splits and you may as well be speaking in hieroglyphics there Methuselah. And then these kids get trapped because you HAVE to train the muscles 2x a week to grow and the only way to do that is training 6x a week with a Push/Pull/Legs split and it’s a wonder anyone has time for ANYTHING.
But don’t worry: they’ll just drop off all that pesky cooking to save time. IIFYM right?
Sleep less? Perish the thought. 8 hours a night mandatory: 10 hours are better. Otherwise: no gains at ALL.
It’s 5am here right now. I slept at 12am, woke up at 4am, fed the cats and made a post in this forum because I can’t sleep more than 4-6 hours. Same time zone as China if you guys want to check. @anna_5588 can probably verify this.
I’m working from home so work starts at 9am. Sometimes I have to get on conference calls with contractors from Europe at 9-10pm local time because of the time zone difference.
I’ve noticed that if I don’t get 8 hrs in bed, I feel shit the next day. with that said, 8hrs in bed for me is probably equivalent to 4-6 hrs for other ppl depending on how pissed my neck is
I think quality of sleep is what matters. I could have just stayed in bed but it’d have been a waste of time because I’d be more tired from all the weird dreams I would be having if I forced myself to fall asleep again.
Right now I can prepare work stuff at my own pace while doing other stuff for leisure while I’m at it.
I’ve not slept for more that 4-5 hrs a night for several years, but I make sure I’m laid down and relaxed, meditating or listening to music. I’m giving my body the opportunity to sleep, but it doesn’t want to.
I don’t stress about it and I don’t feel tired in the day if I’m occupied.
At weekends, if I have the opportunity I’ll have an hours nap here and there.
My partner is in a similar situation but constantly freaks out if she has less tan 7 hrs a night, and will spend the next day worrying about being tired.
I have determined I prefer six to eight hours for optimum functionality. Anything more than that I am lethargic the next day and less I can function but diminished.
Also, I think the bigger one is (especially with muscle mass) the more sleep one needs. Every skinny person I know runs on next to no sleep.
I’m a scientist. Like not a specific scientist but I LOVE science.
So to me the point is not "sample size is 1. It is not important "
But:
“Sample size 1. Could this be important? Where could this lead”.
So much modern science is lead by anecdotal evidence until validated by imperical evidence which is right. But if you have a 250lb man monster telling you to work harder and a 170lb point dexter telling you work smarter where do you go?
I think they have been spoon fed so long via the internet
There ability for critical thinking is gone and the notion of experimentation is sacrilegious.
Some kid was telling me not to “jerk the bar off the floor” when I was warming up for deadlifts. Although I always pull with max acceleration regardless of the weight, the plates on the bar are normally around half an inch off the floor when the weight is under 200lbs because I pull the slack and shift the weight onto my hips prior to executing the actual lift. I do it in one quick, fluid motion after a couple of motions to stretch out my hamstrings and I think it just happens too fast for noobs to notice it.
Shit… years ago I had a kid ask me to help him with his squat form after he watched me doing so
As I was explaining a few things I got informed I was doing it wrong. Mind you this kid approached me for advice.WTF
I’ve gotten “advice” from noobs for squatting with 10lb plates under my heels when I can’t be bothered to bring along my olympic lifting shoes despite having twice what they’re squatting on the bar.
They don’t get that that everyone is built differently and “ankle mobility” isn’t always the problem that the Internet wants them to believe.
NOTE:
I squat deep because it gives the best gainz after lots of trial and error. Otherwise I wouldn’t be bothered to. This isn’t some kind of “doing shit just for the the bragging rights” thing. And it’s not possible to maintain my torso angle given my body proportions without some form of heel elevation. I go even deeper when I use the Smith Machine because I can put my feet in front of the bar.
Not everyone needs to squat deep. It’s all dependant on the individual. Lots of my friends with big legs simply do half squats. Don’t believe all the bullshit you read.
I prefer the smith machine squat for this exact reason.
I wish I had one of those pendulum squat machines John Meadows has in his videos. Those look awesome.
