Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Honestly, I do the same. Again, I think of it as the push/pull of health vs pleasure, though of course health also IS pleasure (when it is, because other times it’s not). I was thinking on the treadmill just now that my above post:

Makes pretty clear why I have never been a competitive anything.

Anyway, I confess that I’m somewhat full of it because I declined to go with my husband to my in-laws’ today, in part because the thought of eating turkey salad sandwiches with chips and dip and then a big, Italian dinner (it’s Ravioli Day, the annual day to make homemade ravioli for Christmas dinner) along with 7 hours in the car makes me feel a little sick. I was ready for non-rich food and yes, my workout. But had I wanted to go (let’s say it was pizza for lunch and grilled burgers and hot dogs for dinner, which I much prefer over gloppy mayonnaise-y turkey salad and the ravioli “scraps” they’ll have for dinner) I absolutely would have, guilt-free.

Fair enough. We’ll all be here to harass you if you don’t!

Hell yeah! I already have the Mrs on task with making sure I eat a high fat meal before bed each evening. Been helping a lot with my sleep. Definitely not afraid to call on help when needed.

I disagree. I see it as being entirely emotional. Not the eating decisions specifically (canned chicken vs something else) but rather the compulsive drive that underlies them. Denied compulsion becomes distress, which depending on the person exhibiting the obsessive/compulsive behaviors can be as extreme as panic.

I think most of us on this site have some familiarity with OC-levels of drive, and @T3hPwnisher in particular is known for single-mindedness in pursuing his goals. That he is able to recognize the following is what keeps him safe. He manages to balance on the knife’s edge between healthy and unhealthy.

I’ll grant you Italy can be terrifying, but for me South African cities are the worst for driving: bad roads (BAD roads!), frequent power outages where the traffic lights go out, no policing whatsoever, wild mix of vehicles ranging from huge 4x4s, really ancient rust-buckets, plenty of minicabs fighting over fares, unlicensed drivers… and did I mention a rampant gun culture.

The Zola Budds (minicabs) are just… well, I’ve seen one being driven with a monkey wrench instead of a steering wheel, they frequently crush 40 people (yes, 40) into a 16-capacity vehicle, they are totally unregulated, the drivers ALL carry guns (often AK47s).

Sounds like Israelis should head on over, they’d feel right at home!

This is like the cruelest history joke ever.

It’s not just the driving, they’d love the ultra-nuanced historical land disputes.

Every time I hear about or watch a video pertaining to South Africa, all I can think is “Why would ANYONE want to live there?”

I emigrated in 2002 - possibly the best decision of my life.

wut?

Well we do all have rifles or pistols.

My daughters are the only one with proper full autos. I just get by with my pistol.

In the 80s my father finally made it big importing BMWs and modern military weapons into South Africa around an embargo and oil from the ME from South Africa around an embargo.

Great friend to Israel, at one time.

I’ve always joked the Afrikaners should convert en masse to Judaism and make aliyah to Israel.

Remind us, please, as to why SA was under the embargo of which you speak.

I can’t admit to any crazy feats of eating with wolf like abandon because I only had one reasonably sized plate of turkey, taters, and glop casserole then took a nap.

Just plain lame.

My kid, on the other hand, ate two whole plates stacked with turkey, and only turkey.

I guess a mantle of some sort has been passed.

They only claimed to sympathize with Israel because of the missile projects and cough cough the bomb. Old Afrikaners speak very differently in private.

The nature is breathtaking and the biltong is tasty?

My sister lived there for a few years (they left due to absurd levels of crime) after marrying an Afrikaner who’s somehow bigger than me. I visited her several times there and I vividly remember perusing a newspaper and reading a matter-of-fact blurb how “as of yet unknown perpetrators broke into a police station and raped the officers”. What got me that it was buried in the back of the paper.

Yeah.

He’s been off and on about proteins for ever, but last year was pretty excited about turkey. I chalked it up to holiday excitement, but did make a few things like fajitas using ground turkey, which he really did like. This was definitive though.

So we’re gonna have more turkey on the menu from now on.

Confessionish: I’ve had a personal dislike for turkey ever since I was a kid. Times got really difficult and we basically lived on turkey loaf for a couple of years because it was like 29¢/lb. and there were 5 of us kids to feed.

It’s time to let that go.

When we were in Greece, I made the BIG mistake of listening to Google instead of the locals. I made a left turn instead of going straight and found myself on a dirt road on the side of a mountain which I’m sure was designed to fit one donkey and not a car with a sheer edge down to the ocean.

I had never been more terrified in my life. Beads of sweat were rolling down my head. The only comforting thing was my kids weren’t in the car.

Later on, I caught up with a family who were also holidaying and they talked about the terrifying road on the island they’d never go on again . That would be the new road with two lanes, sealed with space to the edge lol
