Flame Free Confession III: Even More Flame Free (Part 1)

Went back to my gym today, didn’t have to wear a mask, no one cleaning equipment down, no social distancing. Loved it.

Delivery apps have changed my life. Craving some tacos from the food truck 2 miles away? Meh, I’ll have it delivered.

Craving some sushi? Meh, have it delivered.

Want a caprese salad with some chicken dinos? Sweet, be here in 30.

This morning, my wife ordered biscuits and gravy, without asking if wanted something. Meanwhile, I ordered a breakfast burrito. Hahaha instead of going to the fridge, we go to the app.

My parents to me: Looks like the clean up/cooling/lunch/etc fairy is away

Me to my kids in the future: Looks like the app fairy is away

Since incorporating boxing into my routine, I’ve lost 5 lbs pretty damn quickly, and prior to my 6 month block of eating buttloads of food I would just let the weight loss happen, but I may have permanently altered something in my brain, and so I have a 5 lb pork shoulder slow roasting in a dry rub with a splash of root beer, homemade baked mac n’ cheese and homemade coleslaw on deck. Pulled pork sammiches with carbs and more carbs should do the trick. I’ve also eaten 10 eggs and over a pound of chili today. And 2 hot dogs.

I bought some Hershey’s Kisses Cereal for my cheat meal. I had 120g of it last week and I was wiped for the day - I think I was 1 spoonful away from a diabetic coma.

That smart thing would have been to throw the stuff away but instead I dropped down to 90g - still in pain city lol

On the bright side, I feel too awful to eat again so this cheat fuels an IF day.

While I rebuild, I’ve taken to using med ball over shoulder throws to have some element of hip hinge

I confess the ‘throw’ feels more like me popping the ball up, and letting it drop behind me rather than anything similar to a clean/deadlift

Be careful you chuck the ball behind you instead of above - you don’t want to throw it up, assume it’s behind you, and get hit in the head by the falling med ball.

Excerpt from one of my recent log entries:

“I was remembering my cardio-glory years while driving home. A decade ago, I’d do 30 minutes of sprint intervals on the stepmill, climbing 55 spm for 3 minutes and 110 spm 30 seconds. I’ve always been an awful distance runner, so I’m surprised I could maintain that pace on the stepmill.”

Confession: I’ve literally become one of those middle-aged men who talks about his past gym experiences. Doggone. What am I even doing with my life?

Gyms here (south west of London) re-opened this weekend, and I went in this morning. Damn! Felt so good to be back.

Downside: I was looking around and thinking: this is pretty much a perfect Covid incubator, precautions or not. Gym is pretty well ventilated - it’s in a little mini-factory with a roll-up shutter door, and I bought full hand training gloves, there’s plenty of anti-septic wipes etc. But still, multiple people’s hands touching metal, lots of heavy breathing…

So to my confession: much as I’ve missed it, I’m not sure whether going back to gym is a great idea. Maybe the risk is OK for me as a healthy individual, but for society?

Haha I went past one of my old running circuits with my wife early this year and I had to tell her about one of my better runs from the past. “It was the hottest day of the year (it wasn’t), I hadn’t run for a few months (months, weeks, meh) and I had hardly rested (compared to a sloth)…” Resistance is futile

Have you had an antibody test? Hard to assess the risk without knowing a really important factor.

What gym do you go to? Im training in west London atm, there are 4 or 5 of my gym’s chains around here (Puregym) and they are capping capacity at 100 in a pretty big gym. Both I’ve trained at here since re-opening have been spotlessly sterilised and only had 20-40 people in. The app also tells you live how many people are in each branch at any given time so you can go when its empty. Might be worth checking out if you’re worried.

I train at Inferno next to Hersham Station - really good little place. They seem to be doing everything right - you have to book a slot, and the cleaning and ventilation looks spot on. But there’s only so much you can do when you’ve got people panting and sharing equipment…

I’ve been tested twice in the past three weeks because I’ve been going into the office 3 days a week again. As I said, not so worried for myself, I’d rather not get sick but I’m healthy so should be low risk. It’s more the general transmission of the virus.

Mind you, everyone in the gym was being very sensible - we can’t stay locked down forever, so I guess this is how it has to be: get on with it, just try to be as careful as possible.

Antibody or antigen test? (Had it or have it tests respectively). Im assuming antigen because of the timing, a second antibody so soon after a negative would be pointless. Might be worth getting yourself an antibody test.

I must have had it very early on, because i had a positive antibody test 2 months or so back. Just means i can be more relaxed about both getting it and spreading it.

Both anti-body tests (1st one was finger-prick, 2nd was blood). Made slightly pointless by the fact that one of my co-workers got a positive from the finger-prick test and a negative from the blood test.

If you had it already with few or no symptoms, that’s first prize. I’d still prefer not to get it at all, but that’s probably not realistic in the long term!

Back to bars for a minute - I’m a fan of Epic bars. They’re basically just meat sticks, but pretty decent tasting. No carbs, so it’s not the best “energy” option, but I like them a lot more than other protein bar options. I usually only eat bars when I’m spending a day outdoors, so I just pair them with some peanuts and dried fruit.

absolutely. I go to a pretty large gym with good aircon and constant cleaning of equipment after each use and ppl are very compliant with it. I feel this is the best course of action at the moment.

Compared to the very necessary super market trips (vs optional gym) the gym seems cleaner as there is constant cleaning of touched surfaces and lots of hand sanitizers around. hopefully this will be effective enough so that gyms can stay open. they sure help mentally.

This is how I’ve felt. If you feel at all unsafe, it’s as easy as not going to the gym. My gym’s been open for more than a month and I still have yet to see anyone getting off of a machine or piece of equipment without cleaning it, wiping down barbells included. Some people wear masks, most don’t, not many people stand around talking within 6 feet, and everything is generally pretty safe.

I must confess that when there was only one deadlift platform this weekend( and it was one of the platforms attached to a squat rack where someone else was squatting) I was completely in gym mindset and, as I always would have previously, I just asked if he minded if I deadlifted on the platform behind him between his sets.

He gave me a funny look, and said yes somewhat sheepishly. He immediately left and went to another piece of kit. At the time I just assumed he must have been finished, but as I read this comment I realise I had completely forgotten about social distancing measures in my return to gym euphoria and may have made him feel very uncomfortable by trying to train so close to him.

Most people leave as soon as their set is over if I ask to work in. It’s not necessarily a COVID thing
