I Read in the article today to take fish oil to help gain mass. How does fish oil help you bulk? What are some good kinds to get?
Fish oil will supposedly help you to increase your (muscles’) sensitivity to insulin which means that you’ll use carbs more efficiently, thus if you are eating excess cals, if at least partly due to eating more carbs, then more of those carbs will go to increase muscle glycogen rather than fat than before the muscle became more sensitive to insulin. Omega 3s are also anti-inflammatory so your joints will thank you if you’re lifting heavy, and I suppose you might be slightly less sore and or recover faster due to the anti-inflammatory aspects, although I am just theorizing. I suppose you could google it.
Did you read that Poliquin article where his athlete gained 30 pounds or something?
You should likely be using fish oil regardless, but like BT said there might be some benefits in terms of insulin sensitivity.
Biotest sells fish oil on the site here.
Thanks
Fish oil is supposed to be good for the joints. I took a shitload of it during my last bulk where I always lifted heavy weight, low reps. I notice ZERO difference when taking it. I took 8 capsules a night.
Some good kinds to get? Biotest makes a pretty good one, Flameout.

Sam how Old are you?
Curious as to the Zero difference with fish oil use. I’m still young and When I cut down my fish oil intake I didn’t quite notice a difference.
One thing i Did notice an my girlfriend noticed was my joints all creaked a hell of a lot more and more cracking. Now this doesn’t cause discomfort but maybe in 10-15 years it would add up. With a high dose fish oil my joints were much more lubricated and ‘quieter’
When I say high I was doing 20-25g/day, now down to 3g/day.

I’m 34 for so I figured it’d be a good idea to start taking them since my shoulder joints were achy. They didn’t help. I have however fixed my bench form, and do shoulder prehab which has made a noticeable difference. I’ll probably start back up for heart-health reasons though.
I notice a massive difference when not getting at least 15 caps a day.

What is your dosing schedule? Do you split it in 3 doses, do you take it with food, or what?
Minimum is 15 a day no matter what. Right now I’m on 24 a day. 3x8 taken with meals. The one’s I take are no where near as strong as Flameout. My ones are 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA and 10mg Vit E per cap.

Right on. I’m on 4 Flameout per day and I feel pretty good. One of my dogs (22 pounds) is on one per day and is doing much better with mobility and stiffness!
Fish oil is…the shit. Clearer thinking, clearer skin, and less joint pain. How could you go wrong?
What about Flaxseed oil??? I take the Carlsons oil 1 tablespoon a day it 4800mg…Do you prefer the caps or the oil???

Fish oil is better.
Flameout is best.
Carlson’s suppository is pretty good.

Not a fan of flaxseed oil, it’s expensive and has a tendency to be rancid before you even break the seal of the bottle. Better off buying flaxseed, ground it up yourself in a coffee grinder and adding a tablespoon or 2 to your shakes.
and its good idea to get a mixture of plant source omega 3’s (flaxseed, walnuts) and marine source (fish, krill, Seal)
Just to relay a relevent experience here.
My dad is 55 yo, as very poor sleep (4-6h) for LONG time, poor eating habits leading to insuline insensitivity and works 12h shifts 7days out of 14 on a rotating schedule.
I didn’t assess his body comp., just told him to weigh himself as his job on a precision scale and gave him two bottle of Poliquin brand fish oil and Poliquin’s Multi-Intense, telling him he’d lose weight and his joints would feel better.
Fast forward three weeks later, he actually gained 7 pounds but was a lot looser in his pants. Being broad shouldered and naturally mesomorph, my guess is that the multi + fish oil helped him gained back some of the muscle mass he’d naturally carry even without training but that he’d lost due to a combination of factors (age, poor insuline/blood sugar management, sleep issues, etc)
A second point I want to mention, on top of what bulletprooftiger said, comes from a Poliquin article called “The Power of DHA” that said that one of the two fatty acid contained in fish oil, DHA, was found in high concentrations in typeII-b muscle fibers. So only one of the two FA as direct implications in bulking.
My very own and no so scientific conclusions are that fish oil does help in bulking, but might be more specific for certain cases and/or type of training, and that DHA might make more of an impact on power/explosive/max force training.
